Hybrid Drives : Miles to Go

Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about solid-state drives, which are more or less very large, more permanent implementations of the USB fl ash drive. These drives have no moving parts, have much faster access times, and are less vulnerable to shock. These are probably some of the reasons that they are offered as an option now by just about every computer manufacturer on the market. However, because the technology is newer, they are more expensive per GB of space, which is defi nitely a turn off for many p eople. These new hybrid drives are a nice compromise between the two options. They are composed of a traditional drive of magnetic disks, with a small solid-state cache that will store frequently accessed to data to allow for super fast lookups on that data. A hybrid hard drive is one that combines the platter-based storage on a traditional hard drive (HDD) with a small amount of onboard fl ash memory. This fl ash memory is generally used to cache frequently used applications to improve the responsiveness of the system, bringing it closer to that of a solid-state drive (SSD). This design enables hybrid hard drives to have faster performance than HDDs while offering a similar storage capacity. Although they cost slightly more than HDDs, they are signifi cantly more affordable than an SSD.

From booting up to opening applications, SSDNow signifi cantly cuts down waiting time. Best of all, with no moving parts, SSDNow drives are shock-proof, maintaining stability through the roughest conditions and extending the life of your desktop or notebook.

SSDs in the enterprise are quickly moving from cutting-edge status to advanced but increasingly common fi xtures of data center storage infrastructure. But as we've seen too often in the past, advances in one area of the enterprise organism are of limited value without corresponding developments elsewhere. It's not without a bit of irony, however, that SSDs are allowing the storage side of the house to push a few envelopes for a change. After all, storage has traditionally been the slowest evolving in the enterprise, as both server and networking technologies have a long history of pushing I/O way beyond the state-of-the-art in traditional spinning media.

Now that enterprise SSDs can boast of speeds as high as 500 MB/s, the pressure is on the rest of the enterprise stack to support larger amounts of Flash in increasingly complex and dynamic data environments. Still, the simple fact is that data loads are expanding exponentially, and enterprises are desperate for any technology to help manage the infl ux, even if it means wholesale rebuilding of enterprise infrastructure. Recently, NComputing launched the NComputing M300, an entirely new virtual desktop device that redefines what is

possible in a thin client. The M300 delivers customers a 3-in-1 device that provides a rich PC experience to three users simultaneously at 1/3rd the cost, using 1/3rd the power and 1/3rd the networking ports compared to PCs and other thin clients. Customers can now deploy more computing per rupee, spend less on power and facility upgrades, and manage with fewer IT resources. Available immediately worldwide, the M300 is targeted at local workgroups from 3 to 45 users in environments like classrooms, labs, libraries, shared office workspaces, business centers and call centers.

Manish Sharma, Vice President Asia Pacific, NComputing Inc, said, “NComputing delivers unmatched price performance, most optimal capabilities and is the only technology vendor to provide the entire end-to-end VDI solution.” “The new 3-in-1 M300 is a game changing product and will further strengthen our position in the thin client segment in India. International Data Corporation (IDC), a leading provider of global IT research and advice, has ranked NComputing as the largest provider of enterprise client devices in India, with an unbeatable market

share of 89%, as per the last tracker report, “Sharma added further.According to International Data Corporation (IDC), NComputing

is the largest provider of enterprise client devices in India. India is one of the world’s most prolific consumers of thin and terminal clients; and home to some of the world’s largest public and private virtual desktop deployments – most of which are based on NComputing technology.

“This latest IDC report reinforces NComputing’s position as the leader in the enterprise client devices market in India - which has been our fastest growing market,” said Sharma. “NComputing has redefined and revolutionized desktop computing. We lead the market in innovation and solving the desktop computing needs of public, private and education customers throughout India. We intend to expand the market still further through the introduction of new products, by growing our partner and channel base, and by increasing existing and new customer adoption,” continued, Sharma.

In Q3 2011, NComputing had achieved 200% YoY (year-on-year) growth in shipments of its virtual desktop solutions in India. The company has achieved particular success in the education and public sectors, having supplied 60% of its solutions in schools throughout India. 30% of sales were to small and mid-sized businesses (SMB), a market that is increasingly turning to virtual desktops as a high performance, low cost desktop computing solution.

NComputing solutions have been adopted as the desktop computing solution of choice by multiple states like Bihar, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. “The company has also been recognized for bringing truly affordable, simple yet high performance and energy efficient computing solutions to schools, hospitals, factories and businesses. NComputing recorded a recent technology breakthrough in the performance and economics of VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) with the release of vSpace Server 6.5 that delivers the ability to support up to 100 users in a single operating system,” said Sharma.

The newly launched product the M300 was built to be a simple, incredibly powerful, and highly affordable thin-client deployment option. Working in tandem with NComputing’s vSpace Server 6.6 software, the M300 3-in-1 thin client kit allows an organization to add virtual PC desktops for a fraction of the cost of a PC. “Customers can lower cost of acquisition and energy costs by more than 75%, networking costs by 67% and support costs by up to 75% ¬-- with no compromise in the quality of the computing experience for users. For the M300, vSpace Server software enables up to 45 concurrent users to be hosted on a single operating system instance and on a single host computer. An entire deployment can be measured in hours and managed by either IT professionals or those with only basic PC skills and time. With these capabilities, the M300 3-in-1 thin-client kit multiplies the benefits of thin client computing in a virtual desktop environment,” added, Sharma.

“NComputing’s highly successful PCI-based X-Series, the M300 delivers superior graphics & HD video streaming capabilities, increases the number of users per host PC, connects at distance with Ethernet, and provides support for USB 2.0. The M300 is available immediately from NComputing’s National Distributor, Redington India Limited and its 700 channel partners across the country,” concluded, Sharma.
