I am gratified to welcome all invited guests and participants at Nirma University for
National Conference of Institute of Pharmacy (NCIP – 2019) on “Integrating
Natural and Modern Medicines in Drug Discovery and Development” from
January 24-25, 2017.
All the diseases are different and unique, require different drugs for treatment.
Research is the best defense against all the challenges faced in development of safe
and efficacious treatment of diseases. Currently, the nation’s investment in drug
development is also increasing which is definitely helping the young researchers for
new drug development by integrating natural and modern medicines.
In light of this, organization of such a conference will serve the purpose of nurturing
innovations in the field of drug, discovery & development and help in exchange of
research ideas amongst the budding scientists from academia and industries.
I heartily acknowledge the efforts of Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University for
organizing such event that provides a common platform for all stakeholders to put
forward their views and opinions. I extend my best compliments to Institute of

MESSAGE
I am delighted to learn that Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University is organizing a National Conference for the third time - National Conference of Institute of Pharmacy (NCIP – 2019) on “Integrating Natural and Modern Medicines in Drug Discovery and Development” from January 24-25, 2019. It’s my honor and privilege to welcome all the eminent speakers and delegates to the exquisite campus of Nirma University, Ahmedabad.
Designing new leads against various life threatening diseases has been an integral part of drug discovery process. New drug discovery is facing serious challenges due to reduction in success rats of new chemical entities as well as excessive high cost. This scenario has prompted researchers to come out with a novel approach of integrated drug discovery. Combining the principles of natural medicines with refined modern chemical technology can help in the development of more economical, environmental friendly and effective drug discovery process. Such conferences will help spread the awareness as well as a stage to discuss all the global isssues in integrating Natural and Modern Medicines in Drug Discovery and Development.
I appreciate the efforts of Institute of Pharmacy for taking lead in fostering innovations in drug discovery by organizing a conference on such sought after theme and to offer common platform for the researchers from various parts of the country. I wish from the bottom of my heart that this conference serves as a medium to bring together eminent personalities across the nation to share their experience in the field of drug discovery and innovation.

With the great privilege on behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our honor to invite all the delegates,
invitees and students to the 3rd National Conference of Institute of Pharmacy (NCIP-2019) on “Integrating
natural and modern medicines in drug discovery and development” to be held during January 24-25, 2019.
The pharmaceutical science is a group of interdisciplinary fields involved in the design, discovery,
development, delivery and disposition of the drugs. With the advent of numerous novel drug discovery and
development techniques, natural medicines still hold great promise to offers holistic approach for better
management of various diseases. Successful Integration Of traditional and evidence based medicine can be
possible with each being separately recognized as legitimate forms of health care within the same framework
and by the combined effort of public and government sector. This integrated approach will help in the
development of more economical and effective therapeutics but at the same time faces numerous
challenges. In view of this, the 3rd National conference is organized with the present theme to provide an
open forum for the academicians, researchers, physicians and professionals of pharmaceutical field to enrich
their knowledge about the cutting edge advances and research related to drug discovery & development by
integration of natural and modern medicines.
The organizing committee, under the valuable support and guidance of management of Nirma University as
well as advisory committee members will be able to give this shape of the conference and ensure you great
learning experience at conference. Discussions will be led by experts from the industries, respectable
academia and health care practitioners through plenary sessions and panel discussion. Poster sessions in
various areas of traditional medicines and pharmaceutical sciences will provide an ideal platform to represent
and exchange the ideas from budding researchers.
We acknowledge financial support received from Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science
& Technology (DST), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Gujarat Council on
Science & Technology (GUJCOST) as well as various industries.

ABOUT NIRMA UNIVERSITY

Nirma University was established by the initiative of the Nirma Education and Research Foundation. The
University was established in the year 2003 as a statutory university under a special act passed by the Gujarat
State Legislative Assembly. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2 (f) of
the UGC Act. The University is duly accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with
'A' grade. The University is a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Association of
Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
Functioning under the aegis of NERF, the University consists of Faculty of Technology and Engineering,
Faculty of Management, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Doctoral Studies

The seven constituent institutes being run under the faculties are: Institute of Technology, Institute of
Management, Institute of Pharmacy, Institute of Science, Institute of Law, Institute of Architecture & Planning
and Institute of Commerce. The under-graduate, post-graduate and doctoral level programmes offered by
these institutes are rated highly by accreditation agencies, industry, business magazines and students.
Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University
Institute of Pharmacy established in the year 2003, is a leading institute in the western region of the country
imparting quality pharmacy education at under graduate, post graduate and doctoral levels. Institute of
Pharmacy, Nirma University has been ranked 18th best pharmacy institute among pharmacy institutions of
the country by National Institutional Ranking Framework, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of
India.
Institute of Pharmacy prepares the students to meet the challenges in the area of pharmaceutical
manufacturing and research and development. The Institute houses state-of-art research facility and
infrastructure to support pharmaceutical education and research. The Institute offers B. Pharm, M. Pharm and
Full time and External Ph.D. Programmes in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Institute has adopted Outcome
Based Education (OBE) to further advance the development of professional knowledge, inculcate
employability skills in addition to development of character and social responsibility. To achieve the same

The Institute has dynamic curriculum, robust and talented pool of faculty members, and state of the art
infrastructure in all the departments. It is well known for imparting quality education, doing active research
and also in nurturing students for holistic development, achieved through students' engagement tools like
continuous evaluation, blended learning, active use of Massive Open Online Course, credit-based systems,
departmental electives, institute electives, university and non-university courses, industrial visits & training,
industrial and hospital projects, expert lectures, special training in communication skills, yoga classes and
many more.
OBJECTIVES :
1. To develop a centre of excellence in imparting graduate, postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral level
education in pharmaceutical sciences.
2. To cater to the human resource needs of the rapidly expanding pharmaceutical industry, educational
institutions and research laboratories in Gujarat State and in the country at large.
3. To promote research in high tech emerging and thrust areas of medicine and human healthcare and
contribute towards fulfilling the national objectives in pharmaceutical education and technology.
4. To establish excellent industry academy interactions and undertake collaborative professional
programmes in the areas of pre-clinical toxicity studies, pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism,
formulation and development studies.
5. To undertake research projects sponsored by the government, various funding agencies and the
pharmaceutical industries.

THE CAMPUS
The Institute of Pharmacy is situated on the sprawling 125 acre green campus of Nirma University. It has all
the modern facilities like Sophisticated Instruments, State of the art Labs, Excellent Computing & IT
infrastructure including latest software, Rich Library, canteen, playgrounds, indoor games and gymnasium.
The campus provides an ambience that motivates the students to grow. The Institute building has modern
amenities, with enough space and replenished with modernity and grandeur. The post graduate laboratories
are independently developed for M.Pharm. and Ph.D. students. In addition the campus has sports facilities
and the overall ambience is distinguishable by its serenity, which is conducive for intellectual pursuits.
CLASS ROOMS
The classrooms are spacious, ventilated and equipped with multimedia and audiovisual equipments to
facilitate effective learning. The classrooms are designed to provide maximum interaction between the faculty
and students.

COMPUTER CENTRE
The central computer facilities consist of 24 servers and more than 1500 systems, which are interconnected
by fiber optic cables and 256 Mbps, leased line internet connectivity. Computing facilities for students include
a laboratory equipped with 42 computers for U.G. and P.G. students. The students have an easy access to the
internet. The campus is equipped with Wi-Fi network.
LEARNING RESOURCES CENTRE (LIBRARY)
At Institute of Pharmacy, it is a belief to facilitate production and dissemination of knowledge, information,
insights & intellect in all scientific communities. The Library plays a vital role in the collection development
and dissemination of scientific information and includes a wide range of volumes of different branches of
Pharmaceutical Sciences and allied subjects and also provides extensive access to leading Indian and
international research journals.
The Library at Institute of Pharmacy houses more than 9,062 volumes of books selectively chosen for
reading and reference, 365 CDs, 1,835 Bound Volumes, 831 Project Reports (B.Pharm), 540 Research Project
Reports (M.Pharm), 70 PhD Theses and subscribes about 21 printed national, 3 international periodicals, 15
magazines and 9 newspapers. Library is also providing Web access to 113 e-journals: Science Direct:
Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutical Sciences Module (89), Bentham Science Publisher (23),
Pharmacological Review and Scopus Database on campus. Library also provides remote log-In facility to
access e-resource 24×7 off the campus.
SOPHISTICATED INSTRUMENTS LABORATORY
The Institute has modern instruments like High Pressure Homogenizer, Particle Size Analyzer and Zeta
Potential Analyzer, Lyophilizer, high speed homogenizer, stereotaxic apparatus, microdialysis system, FT-IR,
Fluorescence Spectrometer, Super Critical Fluid Chromatography, UV-Spectrophotometer, HPLC Binary
Gradient with PDA Detector, HPLC with Autosampler Quaternary Gradient, GC, Supercritical Fluid
Chromatography and Extraction, HPTLC ,PCR, Gel documentation system, data acquisition system and Raman
Spectrophotometer which provide analysis comprising molecular mechanisms, elemental composition,
chromatography, diffraction, particle/ material characteristics including various spectroscopes. The laboratory
provides analytical support and intellectual input to both in-house and externally funded R & D projects.
MACHINE ROOM
The machine room is equipped with Rotary Tablet Machine, Fluidized Bed Drier cum Coater, Digital
Tensiometer, Texture Analyzer, Mini Spray Dryer, Freeze Dryer, Automated Dissolution Apparatus, Projection
Microscope, Vaccum Drier, Ultrasonicator, High Pressure Homogenizer, Particle Size Analyzer etc. The
laboratory provides facilities to carry out extensive research and consultancy for pharmaceutical industries.
ANIMAL HOUSE
The Institute has state-of-art Animal House facility registered by CPCSEA, Government of India. It provides
pre-clinical testing in conformity with national and international regulatory guidelines (Schedule Y and
OECD). The animal house facilitates the availability of healthy and homogeneous animals for U.G. and P.G.
studies and for research / outsourced testing. An incinerator is also available at the Animal House.

NIRMA HERBAL WEALTH
A medicinal plants garden, covering a total area of 3556 sq. meters has been developed at the University
campus. More than 150 species of various medicinal plants have already been planted. The medicinal plants
garden provides a strong impetus for herbal drug research and for the training of the students of the
Institute.
RESEARCH LABORATORY
A fully dedicated research laboratory helps the faculty members & research scholars to undertake research
projects as well as to carry out doctoral research work in the areas of dosage form design, stability studies,
phytochemistry, pharmacological screening, synthetic and analytical chemistry and pharmaceutics.
DRUG DISCOVERY LAB
The Institute has a separate Drug Discovery Laboratory equipped with necessary computational facilities. It
possesses seven workstations (computers) with latest configurations. It also possesses molecular modeling
software like Gold Suite 5.1. The students are trained on the software for docking, pharmacophore modelling
and QSAR studies etc.
ACHIEVEMENTS
A team of highly qualified and dedicated faculties are continuously skilled in latest methods of educational
technology and in their respective fields of specialization. Faculty members are actively involved in research,
consultancy and financially funded and sponsored projects.

Total 17 recognized Ph.D. guides with more than 65 research scholars are actively working in the diversified
thrust areas of pharmaceutical sciences. Apart from presenting and publishing their work in reputed journals
and conferences, faculty members and students have won laurels for the Institute by publishing of books,
patenting their research work and by receiving many prestigious awards.
The Institute had received more than 4.5 crore rupees grant from various external funding agencies like
GMDC (Ahmedabad), CSIR, ICMR, UGC, DST, AYUSH, GUJCOST, GSBTM, DBT, SAC-ISRO, FIST and BRNS.
Institute has very high intellect faculty members who are actively involved in research, consultancy, testing
and are supported financially with sponsored projects from different government as well as private
organizations.
Many full time PhD research scholars have received the prestigious fellowships from DST-INSPIRE (Innovation
in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research), Women Scientist Fellowship from the DST, Senior Research
Fellowship from ICMR and CSIR, Prime Minister Fellowship Government of India and from Confederation of
Indian Industries (CII).
Many M. Pharm students and research guides from the department of Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical
Technology & Bio-pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Analysis have received
national recognition for “R. V. Patel Competition for Best Thesis at Masters Program” supported by DST,
Government of India and Troikaa Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Faculty members have been awarded with P. D. Sethi

awards, N. S. Dhalla Young Scientist award and APTI awards for publishing the best research papers and
presentations during symposiums and conferences. Faculties received best principal of the year 2017-2018
award and women of the year award from Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India (APTI). Faculty
members have contributed in innovative pharmaceutical research by solving web based challenges floated by
the Innocentive. Inc. USA.
The graduate students have been awarded for securing the highest grade in B.Pharm Examinations and
many students performed well to achieve All India rank in GPAT and secured admissions at reputed institutes
like IITs, NIPER and other PG centres of India and also abroad. The post graduate students have been placed
at reputed academic institutions and industries of India.
Different departments of Institute have received support from government organizations like ICMR, DST,
AICTE, ISTE, GUJCOST, DBT, DRDO, INSA and CSIR in organizing various workshops, conferences and
symposia of national and international level on recent advances in pharmaceutical sciences.
COLLABORATION WITH RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS / INDUSTRIES
The University, recognizing research as the main drive of success in an academic setting, has established a
distinct Faculty of Doctoral Studies and Research to initiate research programmes independently or in

BIODATA
Dr. G.N Singh did his doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Banaras Hindu University in 1987 and MBA
from University of Hull, U.K in the year 1997. He is a man of humble beginning having qualities of excellent
leadership, dedication and commitment to raise the quality of drug regulatory system in the country. Dr. has
got established Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) in the year 2009 with aim to set and promote
quality standards for drugs and pharmaceuticals. Dr. G. N. Singh, the first Secretary-cum-Scientific Director of
the Commission has been discharging the functions and duties of Chief Scientific and Executive Officer.
Under his leadership, IPC publishes Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) and its Addenda at regular time interval,
ensures availability of IP Reference Substances (IPRS) and Impurity standards. The Indian Pharmacopoeial
laboratory is accredited as WHO pre-qualified (first among government laboratories) and NABL accredited to
ensure compliance of ISO:IEC 17025:2005. To promote rational use of drugs, IPC publishes National
Formulary of India (NFI) at regular time intervals. IPC also acts as National Coordinating Centre (NCC) for
Pharmacovigilance programme of India (PvPI) with the aim to monitor the safety of the drugs and devices in
the country. NCC-PvPI works through ADR monitoring centres in the country and also contributes to WHO
Programme for International Drug Monitoring.
Dr. Singh was holding additional charge as Drugs Controller General (India) of the Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare, Govt. of India from 21st February, 2012 to 20th February, 2018. Dr. Singh within the span of 6
years was able to give new directions to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). He was
instrumental in bringing out swift changes in the drug regulatory landscape of the country by means of
simplification of rules, and procedures using cutting-edge technological platforms.
Dr. Singh also served/serving as a member of various national and international committees, to name few-
Drugs Technical Advisory Board, Drugs Consultative Committee, Expert Core Committee of National List of
Essential Medicines, Pharmacy Council of India, Expert Core Committee of National List of Essential Medicines
and Investigational New Drug approval committee etc of Govt. of India and also in advisory boards of various
academic institutions. The United States Pharmacopoeia convention recognized the services of Dr. Singh and
appointed him as voting delegate for Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission in the USP convention. Dr. Singh is
at Research Council of CDRI, Lucknow and IIIM, Jammu of CSIR, New Delhi.
The vision of Dr. Singh is to bridge the gap within the Industry – Academia - National Institutions - Public for
better health care system in India.

Role of Osteopontin In Tumor Microenvironment:
A New Paradigm In Cancer Therapy

BIODATA
Dr. Gopal Kundu has obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry from Bose Institute, Kolkata, India (1989). He did his
post-doctoral research in US from 1989 to 1998. He joined as Scientist-D at National Centre for Cell Science
(NCCS) in 1998 and at present he is Scientist-G. His area of research at NCCS is tumor biology, cancer stem
cells, angiogenesis, cancer therapeutics and nanomedicine. He has received several awards including Fellows
Award for Research Excellence from USA; National Bioscience Award; Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize;
International Award in Oncology, Greece; International Young Investigator Award, USA and 7th National
Grassroots Innovation Award, Rashtrapati Bhavan, India. He is Fellow of National Academy of Sciences and
Indian Academy of Sciences. He has published 81 papers including Nature Medicine, Science, PNAS, Cancer
Research, J. of Invest. Dermatology, JBC, TCB, Oncogene, Nanomedicine etc and one US patent. He serves as
Editorial Board Member of Current Molecular Medicine, Molecular Medicine Reports, American Journal of
Cancer Research and Associate Editor of Molecular Cancer. Dr. Kundu is acting as Visiting Professor at Curtin
University, Perth, Australia. Dr. Kundu is also Director (I/c) at National Centre for Cell Science, Pune.
KEY NOTE ADDRESS
Tumor microenvironment play important role in determining the invasive and metastatic potential of breast
and other cancers. Analysis of microenvironment in patients with different solid tumors reveals that the
majority of tumors showed infiltration of T cells, macrophages, fibroblasts, dendritic cells etc. Intratumoral
heterogeneity contributes significantly to the effectiveness of cancer treatment and outcome. Substantial
advances in cancer treatments have resulted in significant decrease in mortality. However, existing cancer
therapies often result in high toxicity and nonspecific side effects. Therefore, better targeted delivery and
increased efficacy of drugs are crucial to overcome these effects. Osteopontin, a chemokine like protein plays
crucial role in regulating the oncogenic and angiogenic potential of various cancers including breast. Several
groups have demonstrated the role of Osteopontin in regulating the cell signaling that ultimately controls
tumor progression and metastasis covering all the hallmarks of cancer. During last several years, we have
demonstrated that both tumor and stroma-derived Osteopontin regulate tumor growth and angiogenesis
through induction of pro-angiogenic and metastasis associated genes. Recent data has shown that
circulating Osteopontin acts as predictive marker in development of hepatocellular carcinoma in a large
European population. It has been also reported that knocking down of Osteopontin in combination with PD-
L1 in macrophages suppresses lung adenocarcinoma cell migration. We have demonstrated that Osteopontin
signaling upregulates cyclooxygenase-2 expression in tumor-associated macrophages leading to enhanced
angiogenesis and melanoma growth via α9β1 integrin. Our earlier data showed that Osteopontin controls
HIF-1alpha dependent VEGF expression and breast tumor angiogenesis in response to hypoxia. Our recent
data revealed that Osteopontin transactivates normal fibroblasts to myofibroblasts and support breast tumor
progression in tumor microenvironment. Thus targeting Osteopontin and its regulated signaling network
could be novel therapeutic strategies for the management of breast and other cancers.

Prof. (Dr.) Navin Sheth took over as the Vice-Chancellor of the Gujarat Technological University on December
31, 2016. A renowned educationist and administrator, Prof. Sheth started his academic career way back in
1979 and during the course of time, emerged as a tireless academician and herbal scientist. Born in Modasa
town of Aravalli district of Gujarat, Prof. Sheth had his early education in his hometown. He obtained his
B.Pharm. and M. Pharm degrees from L. M. College of Pharmacy, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. He was
awarded the National Merit Scholarship for his graduation studies. He obtained Ph.D. degree from the
Saurashtra University, Rajkot. He started his academic career in 1979 as an Assistant lecturer at the B. K. Mody
Government Pharmacy College, Rajkot and was gradually promoted as the Lecturer, Reader and Principal
there. In 2007, he joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Saurashtra University, Rajkot as the
Professor and Head. He has also served the Saurashtra University under various capacities like the Dean,
Faculty of Pharmacy, the Chairman, Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Member of the Senate and the
Academic Council. A distinguished academician, staunch disciplinarian and an efficient administrator, Prof.
Sheth has also been the Member of the Peer Teams of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council -
NAAC and NBA. He has also served as the Member and Chairman of the various Committees of UGC/ AICTE
/DST/ GUJCOST and several Universities in India. He had been the Advisor and later on, Member of the GPSC.
In 2016, he took over as the Chairman of the Board of Pharmacy Education, AICTE. Prof. Sheth has attended
many national and international conferences in India and abroad. His research interests include Traditional
Drugs, Herbal Drugs and Standardization, Herbal formulations. His exuberant involvement in R&D has been
recognized by his 100+ publications including 65 technical papers in renowned research journals, 42 papers
in National Conferences 21 papers in the International Conferences. Till 2017, 20 research scholars had
successfully completed their doctoral research under his guidance. At present, 8 research scholars are
pursuing their Ph.D. under his supervision. About 21 of his former PG students are occupying key positions in
the various fields of Pharmacy. Prof. Sheth is awarded by Life Time Achievement Award at KLE University,
Karnataka during 20th National Conference of ISP at Belgaum, Karnataka, Indian Society of Pharmacognosy
2017 at Aurangabad and World Education Convention 2017 at New Delhi. Prof. Sheth has been associated
with various national and international associations and professional bodies as a member or a life member;
these include Indian Society of Technical Education, Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Indian Society for
Pharmacognosy, the Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India, All India Council Of Technical Education
(AICTE), Pharmacy Council Of India (PCI), Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, Gujarat Forensic
Sciences University and B. V. Patel Pharmaceutical Education & Research Development (PERD) Centre. His
dream, vision, mission and efforts are directed towards making the Gujarat Technological University to a
world class University in the field of Science and Technology.

Prof. Anamik Shah is a Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad; founded by Mahatma Gandhi in
1920. Currently, he is looking after it’s various activities of education (Naitalim), higher education, constructive
social and extension programme at various level across Gujarat. He did his M.Sc (Chemistry) and Ph.D.
(Medicinal Chemistry) from Saurashtra University, Rajkot. He has 33 years of teaching and research
experience at Saurashtra University. He has published more than 205 papers in International and National
peer reviewed journals. His research area includes Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Analytical Environmental
Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Natural products chemistry, Isolation & screening of marine based natural
products, QSAR, anticancer, anti-tubercular drug research, MDR reverter development and Analytical Method
Developments of Active Pharma Intermediates. He has worked as a Principal Investigator with No. Of Projects
related to Medicinal Chemistry, Anti-HIV, Anti-Cancer, MDR Revrters, Anti TB, Aromatase Inhibitors, Non

Prof. P. R. Vavia is a Professor in Pharmaceutics at The Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. Currently, he
is the Dean of academic programmes at Institute of Chemical Technology. He has more than 29 years of
teaching experience to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students. So far, Prof. Vavia has guided
over 55 Master students and 43 Ph.D. students who are placed at key positions in leading pharmaceutical
organizations. Presently, his research group comprises 5 masters and 15 Ph.D. students. Till date, he has 137
peer reviewed scientific publications in national and international journals to his credit, with more than 2745
citations and H-index of 27. Prof. Vavia has given more than 250 research presentations at national and
international levels. He has 8 granted patents, 38 complete patent specifications and 3 PCT applications filed
in the area of drug delivery.
ABSTRACT
Excipients are important part in formulation development that decide final dosage form as well as
pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drug being delivered. Over the past few years there has been
considerable interest in using polymers from various natural resources as a carrier in nanoparticle drug
delivery systems due to their multifaceted therapeutic benefits. These polymers with various functionality
can effectively deliver the drug into the target site which provides better therapeutic effect. Many plant
polysaccharides have been extensively investigated for their use in the development of novel carrier system
for drug delivery. Present talk is focusing on some of the important case studies where natural excipients are
successfully utilized in formulation development. Case studies focusing on successful delivery of natural
bioactives with novel drug delivery approach would also be discussed.

Dr. A.K. Mishra is working as a Scientist at Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, Defence
Research and Development Organization, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India. He obtained his M.S.
(Chemistry) from Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur, and Ph.D. (Chemistry) from Banaras Hindu University,
Varanasi. During his career, he held positions as Post-doctorate fellow at Universite de Bourgogne, Dijon,
France; Research Scientist at University of California, Davis, USA; Senior Scientist at INSERM U-463, Nantes,
France, and Visiting Professor at MaxPlanck Institute, Germany. Dr. Mishra has published more than 284
papers, in various journals of international repute. Dr Mishra is granted US, European and Indian patents. He
has received several awards and most prestigious one is DRDO-Young scientist by Prime Minister (Shri Atal
Bihari Vajpayee) of India in 1999. He is also serving as Honorary Professor at Deakin University [Australia],
Task force member [DBT and DST], Core Member of Radiopharmaceutical of India [DCGI], Associate Editor
[Frontiers in Nuclear Medicine] and Expert IAEA, Vienna. His Research Interest includes Molecular Imaging
Probes (SPECT-PET-MR-OI), Radiochemistry, Coordiantion chemistry, Synthetic chemistry and Bioconjugate
chemistry.
ABSTRACT
The tracing and extraction of biochemical of plant origin using non-invasive way is still in infancy stage.
However, all the biochemical of important nature to isolate and characterize required invasive or by
sacrificing the plants with laborious dissections by hand or to depend on less sensitive and non-specific
techniques. To overcome associated strenuous process, we have directed our efforts to develop smart and
specific agent to investigate in vivo topography, and connections and titration of biochemical's non-invasively
using imaging techniques. Our present study opens a new avenue to design and development of multimodal
molecular imaging probe of broad interest in development of affinity based probes. Imaging probes are a
special class of tracers that are used in conjunction with imaging techniques such as MRI, CT, and nuclear
imaging (PET and SPECT), allowing healthcare practitioners to see disease and injuries in a non-invasive way.
In the post genomics era, there is the opportunity to advance probes to the point where they can target
specific biochemical signatures associated with disease. Because changes in biochemistry occur before
diseases reach an advanced stage, molecular imaging probes will foster earlier and more personalized
diagnosis of disease. Our Lab is focused on bringing the power of modern synthesis to bear on the
development of molecular imaging probes and agents. These probes and agents are being developed to
visualize specific molecular targets and pathways in live cells, tissues and organism (from plants, mouse to
human). The specific aim is to 1) design and synthesize new imaging probes/agents, 2) develop and use
novel amplification schemes for the development of 'next generation' imaging probes, 3) optimize
pharmacokinetics and 'imagability', 4) efficiently synthesize and produce complex and diverse small
molecules, and test their ability as imaging agents. To design and synthesis the next generation of imaging
probes/agents for MRI, PET and SPECT, and optical imaging is the core mandate of our research lab.

experience and 4 years of industrial experience at different levels. His fields of specialization include
Extraction, isolation and characterization of phytoconstituents, Development of large scale extraction
technologies, Standardization of Ayurvedic/herbal drugs and formulations, Development of Ayurvedic/herbal
drug formulations, Chemical modification of phytoconstituents, Scientific studies on shodhan prakriya of

ABSTRACT
Herbals are now globally accepted as a valid healthcare system in the form of Phytopharmaceuticals,
functional foods, food supplements, etc., a trend recognized and advocated by the WHO. However,
development of rational phytomedicine requires great efforts in standardization of mono- and multi-
phytopreparations using all available high-tech methods; screening of extracts and their constituents by
integration of modern molecular biological bioassays; and controlled, clinical studies, inclusive of
pharmacokinetic and bioavailability investigations, aimed at evidence based phytotherapy. When botanical
medicine is fully developed then herbal products will be approved by FDA. Such approval would bring about
the establishment of required standards of quality for phytomdicine. Health practitioners will prescribe or
recommend both phytomedicine and synthetic medicine for various conditions, depending on which is
deemed more appropriate. Then the herbal medicine will have become integrated into conventional
medicine.
The talk will cover the aspects related to development of rational phytomedicine – opportunities, the path
ahead and challenges.

The Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, abbreviated as AYUSH, is
a governmental body in India purposed with developing, education and research in Indian traditional
medicine. It was created in March 1995 as the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy
(ISM&H). It is operated under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. AYUSH received its current name in
March 2003. The Ministry of AYUSH was formed with effect from 9 November 2014 by elevation of the
Department of AYUSH. There are more and more AYUSH products are being introduced in the market
compared to allopathic medicines. At the same time the Regulatory Authorities worldwide has become more
stringent for the approval of the products. The CDSCO Regulatory Guidelines will be discussed in brief along
with a touch on Phyto pharmaceuticals.

Professor Asit K. Chakraborti obtained his M. Sc. degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of
Burdwan, West Bengal and Ph. D. degree in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from IACS, Kolkata. After post-
doctoral research training in USA in the department of Chemistry, Clemson University, South Carolina and in
Medicinal Chemistry at Purdue University, Indiana, USA, he joined the University of Burdwan as a faculty in
the department of Chemistry and served for the period 1990-1994. He joined the department of Medicinal
Chemistry, NIPER, S. A. S. Nagar, Punjab, India as Assistant Professor in 1994 and was elevated to the position
of Assoc. Professor in 1999 and to Professor and Head in 2001. Prof. Chakraborti has guided 38 Ph. D. and
130 Masters' students, published 173 research papers (with > 8900 citation with h index of 56), and filed 42
patents. He received several awards and recognition such as University Gold Medal, Bardhaman Sammilani
Gold Medal, ISMAS Eminent Mass-spectroscopist award, Ranbaxy Research Award (Pharmaceutical Sciences),
Chemical Research Society of India Bronze Medal and many more. His research interest is synthetic organic
and medicinal chemistry with thrust in new drug development in tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, and
inflammation to develop NMEs through development of novel synthetic methodologies (catalysis, C-H
activation etc.) in compliance with the green chemistry principles and deriving novel concepts (understanding
the molecular level role of acceleration of organic reactions in water and fluorous alcohols, the origin of the
organocatalytic potential of ionic liquids etc.).
ABSTRACT
Inflammation, though considered the normal defence mechanism of living systems, is the root cause of
several diseases if remains uncontrolled. The most common diseases caused due to inflammatory disorder
are COPD/asthma and arthritis. The enzymes PDE-IV and COX are the most popular targets for medicinal
chemists to generate new therapeutic agents to treat these diseases. While there are limited options to treat
COPD/asthma with roflumilast being the only candidate to received FDA approval as selective PDE-IV
inhibitor in the recent times the COXIBs (the selective inhibitors of COX-2) emerged as the most popular
drugs to treat arthritis. However, the drawbacks of the available therapeutics (nausea and vomiting in case of
roflumilast and the cardiac problems associated with the COXIBs that led to the withdrawal of several COXIBs
such as valdecoxib and rofecoxib) urge medicinal chemists to look for new structural scaffolds to generate
more effective agents to treat these diseases. Also at the same time, discovery medicinal research is
undergoing through a paradigm change that urges the need to enrich the medicinal chemists' tool box
fulfilling the green chemistry principles. However, despite of the small molecule drug discovery being driven
in synthetic organic chemistry expertise, the current trend in the medicinal chemistry the most frequently
used synthetic reactions are less represented by the innovative breakthroughs in chemistry. Such inclination
of discovery medicinal chemistry towards a handful of organic reactions lead to biased molecular architecture
with narrow scope of exploring the available chemical space. The present discussion will highlight the
integration of the innovative chemistries for C-H and C-X (X = Br/O) bond activation using novel concepts
such as co-operative catalysis by hetero-bimetallic nano clusters, to identify novel anti-inflammatory
scaffolds/agents.

these medicines are economical to the common man.
He has been honored with the highest national award in Urology ‘ The Pinnamenani Venkateswara Rao
Oration’, Citation and Gold medal in 2015 for his outstanding contributions.
He is one of the few individuals who has painstakingly conducted clinical research trials for scientifically
validating traditional formulations for kidney stones, wound healing and other urological disorders for which
there are no convincing solutions in the modern system. He is the first urologist to be awarded a research
grant by DSIR, GOI, under TePP for his research on a herbal formulation .
He has obtained two US , two European and one Indian patent till date. Patent search has found that he is
the only Indian national natural to obtain two or more patents on herbal formulations (and also on kidney
disorders) in the territories of US, Europe and India. He has been a member of the Senate, the Super
speciality Board of Studies, the Research Advisory Board and the Board of Yoga & Naturopathy with
Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. He is also the Governor’s (Chancellor) nominee to the
management council of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.

was a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology, University of Frankfurt, Germany in
2005. He has a total experience of 22 years in teaching and research. Presently he is working as Professor at

Prof. Ali has been bestowed with several honours, a few of them worth mentioning include, the Career award

Prof. Ali has received research grants from UGC/ ICMR/ AYUSH/AICTE/DRDO/DST/FIP (The Netherlands/ICMR
industries etc. He is also consultant to industries. His research interests include Improving oral bioavailability
of BCS class II and Class IV drugs using polymeric conjugates and lipid based systems like microemulsions,
nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured lipid carriers. He is also working on
nanoparticulate systems for herbal drug moieties for the treatment of acne and psoriasis. He is actively
involved in formulating nanoparticulate drug delivery systems for brain delivery for treatment of CNS
disorders. He is supervising scientific research of the post-graduation and the doctoral level. He has
guided/under guidance about 67 theses of M. Pharm. and 41 theses of Ph. D. He has written several
textbooks and has contributed several chapters in books on Controlled and Novel Drug Delivery Systems of
Indian and International Publisher. A widely traveled person, he has presented his research work in about 50
conferences held in India and abroad. He has a list of more than 290 manuscripts in journals of repute and
five Indian Patent granted/applied. He has H- index of 49, i10 of 159 and more than 10782 citations to his
credit as per Google Scholar on 03 Jan., 2019. He is also in-charge of IP Management cell of Jamia Hamdard.
He has also worked as paper coordinator of UGC e-pathshala project for two papers of Pharmaceutical

ABSTRACT
Herbal medicines have been widely used all over the world since ancient times and have been recognized by
physicians and patients for their better therapeutic value as they have fewer adverse effects as compared with
modern medicines. Though they present many advantages over modern medicine, lack of scientific approach,
inadequate standardization and patient compliance limit them from being used extensively but the recent
technological advancement in nanotechnology has unlocked new avenues for research and development in
the field of phyto-medicine. Phytotherapeutics now has a scientific approach in delivering the components in
a sustained manner to increase patient compliance and avoid repeated administration which has been
achieved by designing novel drug delivery systems (NDDSs) for herbal constituents. NDDSs not only reduce
the repeated administration to overcome non-compliance but also help to increase the therapeutic value by
reducing toxicity and increasing the bioavailability. Polymeric nanoparticles/nanocapsules, liposomes, pro-
liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanoemulsions/microemulsions, etc. are few examples of
nanopharmaceuticals (NPhs) that have been successfully developed or are under research for efficient
delivery of herbal actives and extracts. The presentation will cover the different aspects of applications of
NPhs for herbal actives and extracts. Prototype examples of various Nanopharmaceuticals will be also
discussed.

ABSTRACT
Lead identification is one of the most crucial steps in the drug discovery process. Natural products, with their
plethora of constituents are a rich source of lead compounds. Challenges encountered during Drug Discovery
from Natural Sources include authentication and identification, seasonal and regional variations, problems
during invitro pharmacological evaluation, isolation of bioactive constituents and their characterization.
Bioactivity guided fractionation of Neem leaf extract and Nutmeg for lead identification for antiplatelet
activity and anti- fungal activity respectively, will be discussed in the case studies.

ABSTRACT
Large number of people and health care providers are using Natural products (NP) along with modern
medicine for a variety of diseases and health issues. In spite of their widespread use, either alone or along
with modern medicine, robust scientific evidence on their safety, efficacy and dosage regime is missing.
Further, the chemical diversity of NP surpasses all man made synthetic libraries of small molecules and
continue to inspire novel discoveries in chemistry, biology, and medicine. However, most of the
pharmaceutical companies have significantly scaled down or abandoned their NP programs and not much is
being done to explore their ADME profiles. It is estimated that approximately half of all new drug approvals
can trace back to a natural product scaffold origin. Establishing the pharmacological basis for efficacy and
dosage regimens of NP is a constant challenge. Of particular interest is the question of bioavailability to
assess to what degree and how fast compounds are absorbed after administration of NPs. Of further interest
is the elucidation of metabolic pathways (yielding potentially new active compounds), and the assessment of
elimination routes and their kinetics. These data become an important issue to link data from
pharmacological assays and clinical effects. Of interest are currently also interactions of NPs with synthetically
derived drug products. A better understanding of the ADME properties, bioavailability interaction potential of
NPs can help in designing rational combinations and dosage regimens. In this presentation ADME studies of
widely used NPs will be discussed. Furthermore, various drug interactions are discussed which show that
caution should be exercised while integrating NP with modern Medicine.

Dr. Rakesh Rawal
Dr. Rakesh Rawal is Professor in Life-Science, Gujarat University with 26 years of experience at Gujarat Cancer
Research Institute (GCRI), Ahmedabad. He received PhD in “Role of Biochemical markers in Oral cancer” at
GCRI under Gujarat University in 1999. His last designation at GCRI was Senior scientific officer & Head,
Divison of Medicinal Chemistry & Pharmacogenomics where he did a lot of work on cancer stem cells,
biological screening assays for new synthetic/natural anticancer agents. He has more than 60 research
publications of national and International repute to his credit. He is in the academic & advisory board of
many prestigious institution e.g. GSBTM, NIF, NIRMA. He is in the board of directors of GUSEC (Gujarat
University Startup & Enterpreneurship Council) and co-ordinator for Virtual Lab with IIT-Mumbai. He has 15
research projects from various agencies. His area of interest include Establishing a tumour repository for
Biomarker development using Genomic and Proteomic technologies, Insilico analysis of Drug target and
Invitro models for Cancer stem cell to predict drug response and resistance. He is also interested in
Regenerative Medicine using cell based therapy in cancer management.
Dr. Sarat Dalai
Graduated from Utkal University with B.Sc. in Physics (Hons) in 1990, he did M.Sc. (Biotechnology) from JNU
in 1992 followed by Ph.D. (Immunology) from JNU in 1998. Went to USA for post-Ph.D. research at NIH, Johns
Hopkins Medical School and worked as a scientist for US military Malaria Vaccine Development program at
Walter Reed Army Research Institute before return to India in 2011. Passionate Researcher and Teacher
having strong belief in changing the society through scientific endeavor by motivating younger generation of
students.
Current Research Interest: The laboratory at the Institute of science is working on generation and
maintenance of memory T cells vis-a-vis vaccine development. The major focus of the research is to
understand the CD 8T cell responses to plasmodia liver stage infection. The laboratory is also working on
developing alternative strategy for making effective vaccines that could provide long term protection.
Further, the efforts of lab is also to develop chimeric biomolecules for novel adjuvant and to treat cancer
through immunotherapy.
Dr. Shivprakash Rathnam
Dr. Shivprakash Rathnam is PhD from LM College of Pharmacy, Ahmedabad. Dr. Rathnam was Head-
Pharmacology Research, Zydus Cadila Healthcare up to 1996. He served Sun Pharma Advanced Research
Centre (SPARC), Baroda as Head-Pre-Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology and later started his own
company Synchron Research Services Pvt. Ltd. a CRO in 1998. Synchron is the first CRO in India in Private
Sector totally dedicated to BA/BE studies and Clinical Research. At present he is the Founder & Managing
Director of Synchron Research. He started Synchron in Thailand in 2007 and acquired 100% PAREXEL Bio-
analytical facility in France in 2007. He also started Avance Phytotherapies in 2003 to formulate effective
therapies for those ailments for which there is no allopathic intervention and started INTERVEIN, a central lab
for clinical trials in 2006. He is the Founder Chairman of the company. He is the former Chief Editor of Indian
Journal of Pharmacology (2007-2009). He has more than 60 research papers published in various
International and national journals. He has written many articles in various magazines and book chapters. He
has co-authored a book on Screening Methods in Pharmacology with Late Prof. NS Parmar. Dr. Shivprakash
was awarded " Udyog Ratttan Award" by Institute of Economic Studies in 2008 for his contribution for the
development of Clinical Research in India.
