Data Center Efficiency
22
History of NCC Facility Efficiencies
• Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Silver Certification
• Department of Energy “Save Energy Now”
Assessment – 2008– Used for development of Energy Star rating criteria
– Improve utilization of CRAC units and increase temperature
– Improve positioning of perforated floor tiles
– Reduce lighting of unused areas
– Correct inadequate hot/cold aisle separation
23
History of NCC IT Efficiencies
• Shared application platforms since 1997– Supporting 100s of national applications
– Shared resource pools to reduce costs
• Mid-range modernization 2005-2007– IBM P Series server virtualization
– 3PAR SAN storage virtualization
• x86 server virtualization initiated in 2009– Virtualization Readiness Assessment study
– Continuing to migrate existing servers
– All new servers virtualized (where possible)
24
To The Future and Beyond
• NCC goal to achieve Energy Star certification– PUE or Power Usage Effectiveness
• Ratio of total data center energy use to total IT equipment
energy use – LOW SCORE WINS!
• Consolidation of additional servers at NCC where practical
• Current data center efficiency assessment with
Cisco– Expected outcome
• Efficient, extensible design based on newest technologies
• Improve NCC rack density and hot/cold aisle isolation

– Notify affected customers for outages exceeding 15 minutes
– Include finer granularity (Cold Fusion, Domino, Oracle, etc.)
– Server specific (when necessary)
• Hold quarterly application hosting Web conferences with application owners
– Provide updates on NCC initiatives and progress in achieving goals
– Opportunity for customers to provide feedback
– Contact Vicente (Paul) Cusumano at [email protected]
• Launch revamped intranet site with easy to find information, including contacts
