Welcome to the Eighth Annual National Cattledog Association Finals

The Finals will feature four different classes of dogs running in the field and an arena, over five days. This trial features the best cattle dogs from across the country who have worked all year to earn the right to be here.

Much of cattle country, particularly in the west, consists of large open spaces and rough country. A good cattledog needs to be able to gather cattle from long distances and, under control of the handler, guide them across treacherous terrain. This year at the Finals, you will see dogs gather cattle, work them toward the handler and through a series of obstacles, all with minimal assistance from the handler. To accomplish these tasks, the cattledog must be strong enough to move cattle while keeping them under control and must respond quickly and correctly to commands coming from the handler so that the cattle can be guided calmly but quickly, through the obstacles. 1

The National Cattledog Association (NCA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. The NCA was incorporated in December of 2011 and began operations in January of 2012. Its members, which are from the United States and Canada, are primarily ranchers, cattledog handlers and cattledog breeders. The NCA was founded to:

1. Educate ranchers as to the value of well trained cattledogs for humane, low stress cattle handling through demonstrations, clinics and public cattledog competitions (trials),

2. Assist ranchers in obtaining well trained cattledogs and in learning to use them for efficient, humane and low stress cattle handling,

3. Foster amateur athletic competition by sanctioning cattledog trials and hosting and managing a National Cattledog Association National Finals,

4. Assist members and other breeders in marketing cattledogs by providing venues for demonstrating the abilities of their dogs.

QUALIFYING FOR NATIONALS

Handlers and their dogs have been competing all year throughout the United States and Canada in NCA sanctioned trials to earn enough points to qualify to compete at the National Finals. Points are awarded to the top 30% of each class in the competitions. The NCA sanctions four classes: 1) OPEN. Any dog of any age may compete in the Open class. This is the most advanced

class with the most experienced handlers. 2) NURSERY. Only dogs that are younger than 30 months (2.5 years) at the beginning of the

qualifying season (April 1) are eligible to compete in the Nursery class. For the 2020 Finals, eligible dogs must have been born on, or after October 1, 2017.

3) INTERMEDIATE. Handler and dog qualify as a team. This class is limited to handlers who have never competed in the Open class. Any dog that is not currently running Open or by an Open handler is eligible to compete in the Intermediate class.

4) HORSEBACK. This is open to all handlers/dogs at any level that have accumulated points throughout the year in their respective classes. Priority goes to entries with points earned in Horseback classes throughout the year.

COURSE RULES

• Course is points and time.

• Handler to send dog from, and is free to move anywhere behind handler line.

• Time begins when cattle leave trailer or set-out panels, or when handler sends dog, whichever occurs first.

• The outrun will not be judged, and points will not be awarded or deducted based on the outrun.

• Handlers may retry any obstacle before moving on, but once it’s obvious to the head scorer that a retry is being attempted, previous points earned at that obstacle are forfeited. Handlers may retry obstacles as many times as they wish.

• After cattle have mixed, handler must either be retrying or moving to the next obstacle.

• Runs will receive full time unless all cattle exhaust before time expires.

• A stock stick may be carried.

• Handlers may not enter, reach into, or put any object into obstacles. Violations affecting the outcome of the run will result in points for that obstacle being forfeited.

• If cattle leave the course and the dog was not responsible, a rerun may be given at the discretion of the head scorer. If a rerun is not given, the head scorer may allow points earned to be scored with full time allotted. If the dog is responsible for the cattle leaving the course, a full DQ with no score may be given at the discretion of the head scorer.

• A handler may retire their dog for points earned and a maximum course time at any time during their run. Intention to retire should be indicated clearly to the head scorer.

• During their run, handlers may question scorer as to completion of an obstacle, time used, clearing of obstacle, etc. Scorers will not provide information unless asked.

5

Page 8: NCA National Finals Program 2020 · Finals, eligible dogs must have been born on, or after October 1, 2017. 3) INTERMEDIATE. Handler and dog qualify as a team. This class is limited

• If a dog appears out of control and is abusing cattle, the head scorer may instruct the handler to retire. Dog will receive points earned to that point in the run and maximum time.

• Instructions given at handler’s meetings take precedence over these rules.

• Grievances must be directed to the course director. Course director may consult with scoring committee.

• Decisions of the course director and scoring committee are final.

O

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT

The following are not permitted at NCA National Cattledog Finals 1. Inappropriate language or conduct directed at the head scorer, trial secretary, timekeepers, course director, or any other trial official. The handler may be given a warning from the head scorer, course director, or trial management. Handlers may contact the course director in a courteous manner for clarification of a rule or the accuracy of a score sheet in a timely manner that does not interfere with the competition. The maximum penalty that a head scorer or course director may impose is single run disqualification.

2. Inappropriate language or conduct directed at fellow event participants or spectators. All competitors and NCA members are expected to show exemplary sportsmanship at all times. An allegation of improper use of language or conduct toward participants and/or spectators reported within twenty-four (24) hours of the occurrence will be investigated by the NCA directors and appropriate penalties imposed.

3. Attempting to aid by coaching or distracting another competitor while they are competing. A person attempting to aid by coaching or distracting another competitor will be given a warning from the head scorer, course director, or an NCA director. Failure to comply after the warning may result in disqualification or other penalty. If the individuals providing aid to a competitor are not themselves a competitor, they may be expelled from the current event and/or banned from future events.

4. Tampering with, or attempting to alter competition livestock, the draw, and/or trial course facilities. The NCA directors will investigate allegations of tampering with the livestock, the draw, and course facilities and impose appropriate penalties.

5. Inhumane treatment of dogs or livestock on the trial field or grounds.

Penalties for violations may include a warning, the loss of points, disqualification of specific run, expulsion from the event, forfeiture of all entry fees and prize monies, voiding of membership privileges, and/or any other sanctions deemed appropriate by the NCA Board of Directors. Every effort will be made by the NCA Board of Directors to investigate and consult with all parties involved in each case prior to imposing penalties.

TERMINOLOGY

OUTRUN - When the dog is first sent to gather the stock. The dog goes out to one side or the other in an arc, coming up behind the stock in a position to bring them to the handler.

LIFT - The moment when the stock first begin to move after the dog has completed the outrun.

FETCH - When the dog is bringing the stock to the handler.

DRIVE - When the dog is moving stock away from the handler.

HANDLER LINE - The line the handler must stand behind when the dog is sent to gather the stock. In some cases, the handler may be required to stay behind the line while the dog completes some of the obstacles with only the assistance of verbal or whistle commands.

RETRIES - All obstacles may be retried as often as the handler chooses. Once a handler has moved on to the next obstacle, it may not be retried. If a handler chooses to retry an obstacle, all points previously earned on that obstacle are forfeited.

DAYLIGHTING - All obstacles have proper entrances and exits. If the stock enter an obstacle from the wrong direction, they need to go through the obstacle and exit it far enough that there is “daylight” between the stock and the obstacle before they can proceed.

REMIXING - If only a few head complete an obstacle, the handler may decide to retry that obstacle in order to earn more points. If the cattle that have not completed the obstacle remain separated from the others, the handler may choose to put those animals through and earn points for those head of cattle. However, if the stock “remix”, in other words if the cattle that completed the obstacle mix with those who have not, then the score for that obstacle goes back to zero, and whatever points are earned on the retry will be the score for that obstacle.

COMMONLY USED COMMANDS Most handlers at the Finals will use a combination of voice and whistle commands. Some of the most commonly used commands are:

AWAY TO ME - Used to direct the dog to flank in a counter-clockwise direction around the stock. COME BYE - Used to direct the dog to flank in a clockwise direction around the stock. WALK UP - Tells the dog to walk in a straight line to the stock. LIE DOWN - Tells the dog to lie down. STAND - Lets the dog know he should stop moving, but should stay on his feet rather than lie down. THERE - Tells the dog that he has reached the balance point needed to turn in and take the stock in a straight line. LOOK BACK - Used when the dog needs to turn and look back behind itself, as there are more stock there to be gathered.

Whistle commands vary from handler to handler, as each handler chooses the tones that work best for them.
