PLATTSBURGH — Phyllis Wells passed away at 82 rough-ly a year ago.

The bulk of her estate went to Plattsburgh State, makingit the second largest giftfrom an alumna in theuniversity’s history.

The $470,000 dona-tion from the former li-brarian is second onlyto the estate gift fromOlive Mason Flynt, aformer employee whogave $1 million toPlattsburgh State in2007.

Wells earned herMaster of Science in el-ementary educationfrom Plattsburgh Statein 1957, saying shelived her life at theschool and built her ca-reer there.

“She spent her wholecareer with us,” said Vice President of Institutional Ad-vancement Anne Whitmore Hansen. “She enjoyed her workand took great pride in her connection with the college. When she informed me of her intention to support the col-lege so generously, she commented that ‘it was simply theright thing to do because the college gave her so much.’”

Wells joined Plattsburgh State as an assistant librarian in1957 and received severalpromotions while there. Shebecame a senior assistant li-brarian in 1979 and an asso-ciate librarian in 1987, thesame year she retired.

“Phyllis was an extremelydetermined person,” Hansensaid. “She would regularlyshare her progress toward

meeting her philanthropic goal. She delighted in imaginingthe impact she would have on students and the library.”

Much of her gift will support the Phyllis Wells EndowedScholarship, a fund that is unrestricted.

The rest will go to the Wells Endowment for Special Col-lections in Feinberg Library to support the preservation ofrare and archival materials related to the North Country,Plattsburgh State and New York state.

Wells enjoyed special collections and continued to volun-teer after her retirement.

She had been studying local churches in order to write abook on their history and gave some of her notes to thearchives. She also donated other historical materials, includ-ing information on covered bridges, Clinton County histor-ical markers, ghost towns and post offices.

“We’d talk for hours about local history and her book,”said Debra Kimok, associate librarian in Special Collections.

“Phyllis was very detail-oriented and was getting quite pro-ficient using a computer, something that wasn’t easy for herin the beginning, but which she was determined to figureout.”

Wells also published the “Subject Index to the ClintonCounty Portion of the History of Clinton and Franklin Coun-ties, N.Y.”

“It was a huge success,” Kimok said.It was published in 1880 and until Wells created her index

there was no easy way to locate specific subjects. She donated all sales and proceeds from the “Index” to

Special Collections.“Her impact on the college as both an employee and a vol-

unteer was already significant,” said Plattsburgh State Pres-ident John Ettling, “but with this gift, Phyllis will continueto make a difference, especially for our students who needfinancial support more than ever.”

Welcome 2013!With the Mayan Calendar ending on

Dec. 21, 2012, for some, the ideawe would all still be here for the

year 2013 was unthinkable. But if you are read-ing this, then it is proof we made it.

So happy 2013 — everyone deserves a pat onthe back for making it through a very interest-ing year. We witnessed our federal politiciansmaneuvering to avoid the fiscal cliff followinga heated election that nearly divided the coun-try, countless fatalities to senseless murder-sui-cides that no one will ever be able to makesense of; the voice behind the iconic red friendElmo being denounced as a sex offender, andpeople are still facing a very uncertain econo-my.

Now that the champagne and sparklinggrape juice have gone flat, the midnight resolu-tions have been broken or kept it is time for afresh start. Even without the drop of an extrav-agant ball in Times Square people can stillmark the beginning of a new phase, or the endof a bad habit to improve their lives.

According to a study by USA.gov, the typicalnew years resolutions include:

• Drink less alcohol• Eat healthy food• Get a better education• Get a better job• Get fit• Lose weight• Manage debt• Manage stress• Quit smoking• Reduce, reuse, and recycle• Save money• Take a trip• Volunteer to help othersAs the cliche goes, every journey begins with

a single step. Accomplishing goals and regain-ing happiness and fulfillment in your life canbe achieved in the same way.

To loose those extra pounds get out and starta new morning routine of walking to the coffeeshop. To drink or smoke less the steps to break-ing the habits and addictions can be deep root-ed and tricky. Find what works for you. Find away to take your mind off of it and talk to peo-ple who have gone through it before. Chancesare you aren’t the first to have troubles, so it isalright to ask for help.

Our social habits and associations, as muchas our eating, drinking, and exercise patterns, can be just as much an anchor against progress. If the friends you have surrounded yourselfwith for years seem to be standing still while

you try to move forward it’s okay to separateyourself from them. In life, not everything andeveryone we attach ourselves to should be per-manent attachments. Don’t be afraid to go tonew places and don’t be afraid to learn newthings.

The symbolism behind the new year is in thetitle: new. Human beings are forever growingand you need to create a life for yourself to fa-cilitate growth.

Looking back again there were many posi-tives to 2012. Nationally our president waselected to serve a second term, the US teamsand athletes won 104 metals during the Sum-mer Olympics in London. Regionally an Eliza-bethtown youth, Connor Marvin, who sufferedfrom a rare inherited heart condition, receiveda heart transplant and a new chance at life.

While there is no Mayan calendar extendinginto 2013, the year is sure to bring plenty ofpositives — just as it is sure to unfortunatelyhave its negatives.

Appreciates community supportLetter to the North Countryman:I would like to take time to say thank you to

some wonderful individuals and my communi-ty. The year 2012 is about to end but has markedthe realization of the Chazy Public Library'sdream of having a beautiful new library.

Dr. George Clark was our benefactor, theTrustees and Director of the library were instru-mental in creating the design, and many volun-teers helped us make the dream come true.

I was in charge of fundraising for this projectand I was lucky to have some very motivated in-dividuals; Angela Swan, Pat Neverett, JoannTrombly, Joyce Samonek, and Sue Foreman. Theydonated time, energy and money to this project.Rick and Priscilla Laurin were very generous, they donated a queen size hand made quilt forus to raffle. Debby Powers was the winner. Thecommunity was the real winner. If you are inChazy please stop by and see what our smalltown was able to create with hard work and verygenerous donations. I am very lucky to be a partof this community.

Happy New Year!Tina Trombly

The financial results are now infrom the recent 2012 federalelection. We've just participated

in the most expensive election in U.S.history. Over $6 billion was spent byfederal campaigns, super PACs, politicalnonprofits and the party committees.

Here is the split out of how the moneywas spent according to the Center forResponsive Politics.

Presidential Candidates....$1,377,000,000

House Candidates.............$1,010,000,000

Senate Candidates............$720,000,000

Party Committees...............$1,800,000,000

Outside Groups...................$1,210,000,000

What troubles me is how so muchmoney can be spent competing for theseprized positions and yet once in office solittle of the people’s business ever seemsto be accomplished. Because of our earlyproduction deadlines for the New Yearsholiday I’m drafting this column fivedays before we are scheduled to go overthe fiscal cliff. I can only hope thatwhen you read this column the cliff hasbeen somehow avoided, be it a lastminute agreement or perhaps they get itdone with a few hours to spare. Unfortu-nately I’m not optimistic they will get adeal done. They know what needs to bedone but neither side is willing to giveany ground and it appears both thinkthe cliff will provide them cover fromtheir constituents.

Prior to the Christmas holiday con-gressional Republicans were calling outthe President and Democratically con-trolled Senate for not putting forth aplan to avoid the cliff. Now that thePresident has returned from Hawaii andthe US Senate has been reconvened bySen. Harry Reid they are dishing it backout to the Republicans who will not re-turn until the weekend.

Wouldn’t you think these masterfulcampaigners who’ve raised so muchmoney and command so much power

could domore thanplay child-ish gamestrying toshow eachother upand somehow in theirself cen-tered ap-proachthink that we buy these foolish antics?Well, the sad reality is most of us fallinto lock step behind our party affilia-tion. We let them play these games in-stead of demanding greater accountabili-ty.

In a recent Reuters Poll 27 percent ofthose polled blame Republicans, 16 per-cent blamed the President, 6 percentblame the Democrats and only 31 per-cent blame the whole bunch for the fiscalcliff debacle. With numbers like that is itany wonder our national elected officialshave found it easy to play politics in-stead of solving problems? They have usexactly where they want us. We givethem everything they want. We treatthem like royalty. We are so graciouswhen they bring home our tax dollarsand act as if it’s manna from heaven.

As a nation we should be so over-whelmingly outraged that we find ournation in this position. When it’s theirelection or re-election at stake thesefolks demonstrate they know how to getdown to business and work tirelessly. When it is the people’s business orneeds, they somehow can’t get out ofeach others way. We have no one toblame but the person in the mirror anduntil we refuse to put any money intotheir re-elections nothing will reallychange. If we want real change let’smake the funds spent in the 2016 elec-tion the least expensive election in U.S.history.

for the finished product, though—it was illustrated by Vermont artist Pat Bliss.“I did a Google search for horse artists, and his name came up,” call-Morin said. “I believe

in serendipity, so I knew I had to go with him.”The serendipitous moment came with the connection that one of the real-life horses that in-

spired the first part of the book, Bliss, shared a name with the artist.Call-Morin contacted Bliss—the illustrator, not the horse—and asked if he’d do the draw-

ings for her book. She then sent him a rough layout of the book, complete with sketches and notes describing

ideas she had for the images, and he responded by sending her 24 drawings.“The drawings he sent were just wonderful—they really complimented the story,” Call-

Morin said. The tale of two horses includes both the good and the bad aspects of life, and it was in-

spired by Bliss—the horse, not the illustrator—and her brother, Spirit. In the story the two foals are born a day apart and go through different owners before fi-

nally finding happiness. And for those readers who don’t know that a “foal” is a young horse, Call-Morin inter-

spersed the text with info-boxes to explain the various equine-related terms used throughoutthe tale.

“I wrote the story because I’m concerned with animal welfare and abuse,” Katherine Call-Morin said. “I wanted people to understand that owning a horse is not just about putting ananimal in the backyard.”

Call-Morin has owned horses for about 13 years, and said that people can learn a lot fromthe hooved creatures.

“Part of their essence is that horses have an integrity to them, a predictability; they don’thave a hidden agenda,” she said. “The heart of a horse, if you would relate it to a human be-ing, would be somebody who is like a horse—loyal, strong in character has integrity and istrue to their word.”

She added that she hopes her story will be a resounding voice in inspiring people to treatanimals with respect and compassion.

“They (horses) are really emotional, considerate and kind, and they sometimes fall into thehands of people who don’t have the heart of a horse,” Call-Morin said.

“Heart of a Horse” is about 50 pages long and is suitable for children 9 years of age andolder. It can be purchased at Corner-Stone Bookshop in Plattsburgh, Conroy’s Organics inWest Chazy and in Vermont at Phoenix Books in Burlington and Essex and Underhill Auto-motive in Underhill, or by calling Call-Morin at (518) 726-6060.

Katherine Call-Morin sent a sketchbook (right) to Vermont illustrator Pat Bliss to help guide him. Bliss thensent Call-Morin 24 illustrations (left), which later became part of her book, “Heart of a Horse.”

PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Recreation De-partment and Clinton Community College Center for Commu-nity and Workforce Development have partnered to offer threenon-credit fitness classes that will take place during winter ses-sion and spring semester of 2013.

The three courses are Couch to 5k, Half Marathon Training, and Introduction to Cycling. Each class will take place onceper week at its scheduled time and location, and will capital-ize on the regional strengths of the area by using the roads andrecreational paths that are well-known for both running andcycling. In addition, all three classes will include a comple-mentary City Recreation Center membership for the durationof the course.

He has worked with, trained, and rehabilitated mul-tiple Olympic medal winners and professional athletes. Most

recently, he was the Sports Medicine Consultant for the NewZealand Olympic Cycling Teams and Team Doctor for the 2012London Olympic Games.
