INtrODUCtION tO staINeD GlassInstructors: Section A - Deborah Rodgers; Section B - Eva JohannesAdd some color to your world! Learn to cut, foil and solder flat glass using the Tiffany copper foil method while making a simple sun catcher. Students in this beginning levelclass will also create an 8” x 11” panel using a pattern of their choice. The supply fee includes glass and materials used to make the sun catcher and panel. BeGINNING KNIttING Instructor: Claude BolgerBasic techniques include: cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, binding off, shaping, basic finishing, infor-mation about types of tools, materials, and pattern resources. Students may progress at their ownspeed. Advanced techniques will be taught and projects chosen based on each individual’s interestand skill level. For beginners – a materials fee of $16 is payable to instructor at first class andincludes knitting needles, Knit-Chek, and yarn needles. NC state IN BlaCK aND wHIteInstructor: Katy WallsAn introductory class perfectly suited for NC State students, alumni and the community who wishto visually explore a few memorable sites on campus while learning the art of B&Wphotography! On the first evening your instructor will provide impromptu instruction as she leadsthe class around campus where you will learn to compose the light and motion to be captured inSLR film cameras. Bring your own camera or use a Crafts Center loaner! Students will processtheir exposed film and spend the remainder of this class camped out in the darkroom exploringthe traditional B&W printing process. Students in this hands-on class will have the opportunityto create keepsake visual memories of life on our campus. From learning thevarious camera controls to exercising the options of how and when they are best used, studentsin this nuts and bolts class will gain the confidence needed to capture that perfect instant. Instruction will include a variety of methods for making larger vessels as well as how to handle more clay and get more out of what you alreadycan manage to throw. HaNDBUIlDING 101Instructor: Jennifer SiegelNo experience necessary. Coiling, soft and hard slab construction, and extruding are the mainmethods of handbuilding this beginner level class introduces. Students will create functional aswell as sculptural forms, such as small bowls, plates, and lidded boxes. Surface decorationthrough slips, stains, and wax, as well as glazing, will be a significant aspect of this class. Practice time outside of class is strongly suggested to develop your skills and finish class projects.Supply fee includes one 25# bag of clay. Students will experimentwith abstraction, color combinations, composition, and new materials. During class, studentswill work on their own painting projects. tHe seVeNtH aNNUal NC state PINHOle Camera CHalleNGeInstructor: Katy WallsNow Open to EVERYONE 18 years or older: Grab a friend or family member and register for this fun weekend of picture taking. I t’s a magical process and a greatway to see campus l ife through a different “lens.” Build Your Camera: Bring one or even two well-made l ight-t ight containers anytime from 3:00 -9:00 pm Thursday, September 10, or Friday, September 11, to make your cameras. Oatmeal boxes,shoe boxes, Altoid cans, metal t ins of all types and even a small pumpkin have been transformedinto cameras in the past…use your imagination! Plan on spending an hour to make your camera!Take Your Pictures: Drop by any time on the Challenge Days - Saturday, September 12 and Sunday,September 13, from 9:30 am - 4:00pm (preferably early in the day). We advise that you come earlyand make a day of i t! You’ll load your camera with photographic paper, practice a l i t t le, and goanywhere on campus to take your pictures. Then, head back to the Crafts Center to process yourown original prints. You can take as many pictures as you wish until the 4:00 pm stop t ime. BeaDeD BraCelets aND NeCKlaCesInstructor: Naomi ProfesorskySuitable for all skill levels. Work with needle and thread using a variety of glass beads to exploresimple, yet elegant, bead weaving techniques. We’ll warm up by weaving a herringbone braceletusing Super Duo beads. Next, we’ll make two lovely necklaces adorned with pendants. We’llpeyote weave around a Rivoli for one necklace and use a netting technique to create a Star of Davidfor the other. Using a one tool approach, the class will beintroduced to the fundamentals of design, carving technique and tool care. Students willhave the opportunity to complete several carvings in which lettering, freeform, or geometric style will be explored.
