TRANSLATIONIf one only chants, with some slight faith, the holynames of Lord Chaitanya and Nityananda, veryquickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Thus as soon ashe chants the Hare Krishnamah-mantra, he feels theecstasy of love for God.

    PURPORTSrila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura remarks

in this connection that if one takes shelter of Lord SriChaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda, follows Theirinstructions to become more tolerant than the tree andhumbler than the grass, and in this way chants the holyname of the Lord, very soon he achieves the platformof transcendental loving service to the Lord, and tearsappear in his eyes. There are offenses to be consideredin chanting the Hare Krishna mah-mantra, but there

are no such considerations in chanting the names ofGaura-Nityananda. Therefore, if one chants the Hare

Krishna mah-mantrabut his life is still full of sinfulactivities, it will be very difficult for him to achieve theplatform of loving service to the Lord. But if in spite ofbeing an offender one chants the holy names of Gaura-Nityananda, he is very quickly freed from the reactionsto his offenses. Therefore, one should first approachLord Chaitanya and Nityananda, or worship Guru-Gauranga, and then come to the stage of worshipingRadha-Krishna. In our Krishna consciousnessmovement, our students are first advised to worshipGuru-Gauranga, and then, when they are somewhatadvanced, the Radha-Krishna Deity is installed, andthey are engaged in the worship of the Lord.

One should first take shelter of Gaura-Nityanandain order to reach, ultimately, Radha-Krishna. SrilaNarottamadasa Thakura sings in this connection:

gaurga balite habe pulaka arrahari hari balite nayanebabenra

rakabe niti-cdera karu ha-ibesasra-vsan mora kabe tuccha habeviaya chiy kabe uddha habe mana

    kabe hma heraba r-vndvana

In the beginning one should very regularly chant SriGaurasundaras holy name and then chant the holyname of Lord Nityananda. Thus ones heart will becleansed of impure desires for material enjoyment.

Then one can approach Vrindavana-dhama toworship Lord Krishna. Unless one is favored by LordChaitanya and Nityananda, there is no need to goto Vrindavana, for unless ones mind is purified, hecannot see Vrindavana, even if he goes there. Actuallygoing to Vrindavana involves taking shelter of the SixGosvamis by reading the Bhakti-rasamta-sindhu,Vidagdha-mdhava, Lalita-mdhavaand the otherbooks that they have given. In this way one canunderstand the transcendental loving affairs betweenRadha and Krishna. Kabe hma bujhaba se yugala-

pirti. The conjugal love between Radha and Krishna isnot an ordinary human affair; it is fully transcendental. In order to understand Radha and Krishna, worshipThem and engage in Their loving service, one mustbe guided by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, NityanandaPrabhu and the Six Gosvamis, Lord Chaitanyas directdisciples.

For an ordinary man, worship of Sri Chaitanya andNityananda Prabhu or the Pancha-tattva is easierthan worship of Radha and Krishna. Unless one isvery fortunate, he should not be induced to worship

Radha-Krishna directly. A neophyte student who isnot sufficiently educated or enlightened should not

Srivasa Pandita smiled and said, O Lord, it is not properfor You to test me. If anyone worships You for a day, heis my life and soul. Nityananda Prabhu is Your body, and I am the witness of this fact. Even if NityanandaPrabhu holds a pot of wine, associates with yavan(meat-eating woman), and spoils my caste, life, andwealth, still my faith will not waver. This is a fact I amtelling You.When the Lord heard this from the mouth of Srivasa,

He got up, roared loudly, and embraced him to Hischest.O Pandita Srivasa, what did you say? You have somuch faith in Nityananda Prabhu? You have understoodMy confidential associate Nityananda Prabhu. ThereforeI am most pleased with you and desire to give you abenediction. Even if Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, begs alms from door to door, you will never be afflictedwith poverty. Everyone in your house, including thedogs and cats, will have unflinching devotion for Me. I

am offering Nityananda Prabhu to you. Please take careof Him in all respects. After giving this benediction toSrivasa, the Lord returned home.

Nityananda Prabhu continued to wander throughoutNadia. Sometimes He swam in the Ganges, andsometimes He happily floated in the current. SometimesHe played with the boys, and sometimes He wentto the houses of Gangadasa and Murari. SometimesHe rushed to the Lord's house, where mother Sachishowered Him with affection. In the mood of a child,Nityananda Prabhu tried to catch hold of mother Sachi's

feet, but she would run away. One day mother Sachi had a dream, which she

narrated to her son Vishvambhara in a solitary place.Early this morning I had a dream in which I saw Youand Nityananda Prabhu. Both of You appeared likefive-year-old boys. You were quarreling together andchasing each other. In this way You both enteredthe Deity room and came out holding Krishna andBalarama in Your hands. He had Krishna in His hands, and You had Balarama. Then I clearly saw all four ofYou quarreling together. The Deities of Krishna and

Balarama angrily said, Who are You imposters? Getout of here. This house, these rooms, this sandea, thisyogurt, and this milk all belong to Us.

Nityananda Prabhu said, Those days when Youstole yogurt and butter to eat are gone. The days ofthe cowherd boys are over. Now the brhmaashavetaken charge. Recognize Us and allow Us to enjoy allthe offerings. If You do not voluntarily allow Us to eat, then You will be beaten. Moreover, if We forcibly eat,who can stop Us?

Rama and Krishna then said, It will not be Our fault if

We bind You imposters here today. Then Lord Balarama threatened Nityananda Prabhu,

indulge in the worship of Sri Radha and Krishna orthe chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra. Even if hedoes so, he cannot get the desired result. One shouldtherefore chant the names of Nitai-Gaura and worshipThem without false prestige. Since everyone withinthis material world is more or less influenced by sinfulactivities, in the beginning it is essential that one taketo the worship of Guru-Gauranga and ask their favor, for thus despite all his disqualifications one will verysoon become qualified to worship the Radha-Krishnavigraha.

It should be noted in this connection that the holynames of Lord Krishna and Gaurasundara are bothidentical with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore one should not consider one name to bemore potent than the other. Considering the positionof the people of this age, however, the chanting of SriChaitanya Mahaprabhus name is more essential than

the chanting of the Hare Krishnamaha-mantrabecauseSri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is the most magnanimousincarnation and His mercy is very easily achieved. Therefore one must first take shelter of Sri ChaitanyaMahaprabhu by chanting r-ka-caitanya prabhu-nitynanda r-advaita gaddhara rvsdi-gaura-bhakta-vnda. By serving Gaura-Nityananda one isfreed from the entanglements of material existence andthus becomes qualified to worship the Radha-KrishnaDeity.

Orders of Ka and Guru Verse:31 Purport by His Divine GraceA.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.

    SRIVASA, SACHIMATAANDLORDNITYANANDASrila Vrindavan Das Thakura

Sri Gauranga Raya constantly enjoyed variouspastimes with Nityananda Prabhu in Navadvipa. Allthe devotees accompanied Advaita Prabhu in jubilantdancing and loud chanting of the names of Krishna.Nityananda continued to reside in the house of Srivasa

Pandita. He was constantly in the mood of a child anddid not manifest any other mood. He would not eat ricewith His own hands, so Malini fed Him like her own son.The chaste Malini knew well the glories of NityanandaPrabhu, therefore she served Him as a mother servesher son. One day the Lord was sitting and discussingtopics of Krishna with Srivasa.

In order to test Srivasa, Lord Vishvambhara said,Why are you letting this avadhtastay in your home?I know you are very magnanimous, but we do notknow which caste and which family He belongs to. If

you want to protect your own caste and family, thenyou should immediately get rid of thisavadhta.

Nityananda Prabhu replied, I am not afraid of YourKrishna, for My Lord is Gaurachandra Vishvambhara.

In this way all four of You quarreled and forcibly ateeach others' food. Someone grabbed another's foodand ate, and someone ate the food from another'smouth with His own mouth. Then Nityananda Prabhucalled me and said, O mother, please give Me somerice. I am hungry.

When Nityananda Prabhu said this to me, I wokeup. But I could not understand anything, so I amrelating this to You.After hearing the topics of her dream, Lord

Vishvambhara laughed and spoke to His mother insweet words.O mother, you have certainly seen amost auspicious dream. Please do not disclose thisto anyone. The Deities of our house are full of life, and your dream has firmly established this fact inMy heart. I often see that half of the foods that I offervanish. Feeling shy, I don't tell anyone about this. I hadsome doubt about your daughter-in-law, but todaythat doubt has been removed. Vishnupriya-devi, themother of the universe, smiled on hearing the words ofher husband. She had heard the entire narration of thedream from within another room. Vishvambhara said,O mother, please hear My words. Let us immediatelycall Nityananda Prabhu here to feed Him.MotherSachi was pleased to hear these words of her son and

began gathering the ingredients for lunch.

Lord Vishvambhara quickly went to NityanandaPrabhu's residence and invited Him for lunch. OGosani, today You should take lunch at our house. But I tell You before hand, do not create any mischief.Nityananda Prabhu held His ears and said, Vishnu,Vishnu. Only madmen create mischief. I think Youconsider Me a mischief monger because You thinkeveryone is like Yourself. Speaking in this way, They

both began to laugh. They then proceeded to theLord's house while discussing topics of Krishna on the

way. They both smiled as They sat outside together,

accompanied by Their intimate associates likeGadadhara. Ishana gave them water to wash their feet. Then the Lord and Nityananda went to eat lunch.

The mood in which the two Lords sat eating togetherresembled that of Sri Rama and Lakshmana at thehouse of Kaushalya. In this way the two Lords ate Theirlunch in the same mood, with the same affection, asthe same persons. As mother Sachi happily served Them, she set

out three plates by mistake and They both began tolaugh. When she returned to serve Them more, shedirectly saw Them as five-year-old boys. She sawtwo enchanting boys, one with a whitish complexionand the other was blackish. Both had four arms, andboth were naked. She saw They had the conch, disc, club, lotus, plow, muala, the mark of rvatsa, theKaustubha gem, and Their ears were decorated withshark-shaped earrings. She saw her daughter-in-lawon the chest of her son.

Then suddenly the whole scene disappeared. Shefell to the ground unconscious and all her clothesbecame wet with tears. Rice was scattered throughoutthe entire room. On seeing that wonderful sight, Sachiforgot herself.

Mahaprabhu hurriedly washed His hands andpicked up His mother.O mother, please get up. Calmyourself. Why did you suddenly fall to the ground? On

regaining her consciousness, mother Sachi quickly tiedher hair. She did not say anything as she wept insideone of the rooms. She breathed heavily and her entirebody trembled. She was filled with ecstasy and nothingelse came to her mind. r Caitanya-bhgavata Madhya-khaa Chapter Eight: The

    BRAHMANAANDLORDNITYANANDASrila Narahari Cakravart hkura

There was a rich brahmana everyone knew who livednear Govardhana. He was always overwhelmed in lovefor Balarama, and his mind was always absorbed inthoughts of His character. He was certain that one dayBaladeva would kindly grant him darshan and for thatreason he always wandered around Govardhana. Onecannot describe the fortune of that brahmana who oneday received information that Baladeva would granthim darshan. In order to fulfill this devotee's desire,Nityananda Rama at that time went to Govardhana onpilgrimage. Nityananda remained in a solitary place,

but whoever saw Him was bewildered by His celestial

body, which bewilders even Cupid. When that brahmana saw Nityananda Prabhu in the

distance, he wondered where had this wonderful personcome from. Seeing the Lord's effulgence, he couldunderstand that the Lord was not an ordinary person. The brahmana brought various items like yogurt, milk, cheese, and butter. He came before Nityananda, offeredobeisances, and said, O mahtm, please accept thesegifts. I pray that you please show Your mercy to me so Imay have darshan of Rohini-nandana.

Hearing these words, Nityananda smiled and in greatfun accepted the offerings made by the brahmana. The brahmana then received the Lord's remnants andreturned to his own place, where he honored themah-prasdaand became agitated in love.

The brahmana was unable to return to meetNityananda, and as evening arrived he fell asleep. Atnight, Lord Nityananda appeared to that fortunatebrahmana in a dream. Seeing Him, the brahmanawas very pleased. The next moment Lord Nityanandarevealed His form as Baladeva, and the brahmana fellat His feet. What a wonderful form He exhibitedenchanting

to the entire world! His limbs were glittering, beingdecorated with various ornaments. After blessingthe brahmana, the Lord disappeared. On the Lord'sdisappearance, the brahmana's sleep broke. He becamerestless and started to return to where he had metNityananda Prabhu. At that moment he heard a voicetelling him to remain patient and wait till the morning. He considered that his desire was at last fulfilled. NowI have achieved the Lord, I will not leave Him. I will fall

down and surrender everything at His feet. When thenight is over I will have a goldsmith make ornaments to

offer to the Lord. As he thought in this way sleep againcame.

Again in the brahmana's dream Lord Nityanandaappeared to him. Seeing the Lord decorated in wonderfulornaments, that best of the brahmanas offered manyprayers. As before, upon the disappearance of the Lord, the brahmana's sleep broke.

Morning soon came and the brahmana came beforeNityananda Prabhu and explained the previous nightsdream. The Lord smiled slightly and holding thebrahmana's hand instructed the brahmana in all truths. The brahmana inquired from the Lord, Who has madethose ornaments I saw in my dream? The Lord, who iscontrolled by His devotees' desires, replied, One day Iwill be decorated as you have seen. For now take thisgovardhana iland cover it in gold. I will then wear iton My neck.

The brahmana executed the order as given by theLord. The best of the avadhtas then took the iland wore it on His neck. Even for Lord Brahma, suchpastimes are very rare. Nityananda forbid the brahmanato disclose this incident to anyone. However, out of Hisaffection to His devotee, the Lord remained there forsome days. This rare affection can be had by simplyseeing this place.

    SWEETPASTIMESOFLORDNITYANANDASrila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura

One day in Nilachala, Sri Mahaprabhu calledNityananda Prabhu to a solitary place, and whilediscussing with Him about the preaching of pure

devotional service in Bengal, the Lord sent NityanandaPrabhu along with His associates to Bengal to fulfillHis mission there. During their journey to Bengalthe eternally perfect Vraja associates of Sri Baladeva

Nityananda manifested their self-evident sentimentsof Vraja. Sri Nityananda Prabhu went to the house ofRaghava Pandita in Panihati, where Nityananda Prabhuheard a kirtana performed by the expert kirtana leaderMadhava Ghosa and became absorbed in wonderfulecstatic love. As Sri Nityananda Prabhu climbed on thethrone of Lord Vishnu, the devotees headed by RaghavaPandita performed the Lords abhiseka ceremony. WhenNityananda Prabhu ordered Raghava Pandita to quicklybring a garland of kadamba flowers, Raghava Panditasaw that by the will of Sri Nityananda many kadambaflowers had blossomed out of season in the lime treesituated in his courtyard. Shortly thereafter, the ten directions weresuddenly filled with the aroma of damanaka(Artemisiaindica) flowers, and Nityananda explained that SriGaurasundara had put on a garland of damanakaflowers and come from Nilacala to hear the kirtana. Then Nityananda and His associates all manifestedtransformations of ecstatic love. Sri Nityananda stayedin Panihati for three months and exhibited variouspastimes of devotional service. Lord Nityananda Prabhuused to decorate His body with various ornaments.Along with His associates, Nityananda visited thehouses of the devotees situated on both sides of theGanges. The children were showered with His mercy.

One day Sri Nityananda went to the house of SriGadadhara dasa. In the course of this narration there isa description of Sri Gadadhara Dasas eternal mood asa gopi. Sri Nityananda took the Bala-gopala Deity from

Sri Dasa Gadadhara Prabhus temple and embracedput Him to His chest. When Sri Nityananda heard SriMadhavanandas song describing the dana-khanda-lila, the pastimes of taking taxes, symptoms of ecstaticlove manifested in His body.

In Gadadhara Dasas village lived one Kazi, who wasvery envious, cruel, and opposed to kirtana. One daywhile intoxicated by love of God, Dasa GadadharaPrabhu fearlessly went at night to the house of the Kaziwhile chanting the name of Hari and said, Where isthat fellow Kazi? He better chant the name of Krishna

quickly, or I will break his head. When the Kazi camebefore Dasa Gadadhara and asked why he was comingto the house of an atheist like him, Dasa Gadadharareplied, During the incarnation of Sri Chaitanya andNityananda everyone in the world has chanted thename of Krishna, only you have remained aloof. I havecome to make you chant the name of Hari. The Kazireplied, Gadadhara, you go home today, I will chantthe name of Hari tomorrow. On hearing the Kazi saythe name Hari, Gadadhara said, Why tomorrow? Youhave already chanted the name of Hari. Since you haveuttered the name of Hari, all your inauspiciousness hasbeen immediately vanquished. After speaking thesewords, Gadadhara clapped his hands and danced wildlyintoxicated with ecstasy. After some time Gadadharareturned to his house. Nityananda always resided in hisbody.

Thereafter Nityananda with His associates departedfor Navadvipa to see mother Sachi, and on the way theystayed at Purandara Panditas temple in Khadadaha. While describing at this point the most wonderfultransformations of loving devotional service manifestedby Sri Chaitanyas servant Murari Pandita. After spendinga few days at Khadadaha, Sri Nityananda and His

associates went to the village of Saptagrama and tookbath there at the Triveni bathing ghata on the banksof the Ganges. He stayed on the bank at the Triveniin the house of Uddharana Datta, and He inspired theentire mercantile community to worship Krishna bypreaching the holy names of Krishna from door to door.Even godless Yavanas took shelter at the lotus feet of SriNityananda, the deliverer of the fallen souls. After some time Sri Nityananda came to Sri Advaitas

house in Shantipura. Sri Advaita Acharya offered prayersto Nityananda Prabhu, and then the two spent the entireday in great ecstasy discussing topics of Krishna. FromShantipura, Sri Nityananda Prabhu went to Navadvipaand went straight to Sridhama Mayapur to meet motherSachi. Sri Nityananda and His associates enjoyed ecstatickirtana pastimes in Navadvipa and enacted pastimes ofdelivering the fallen souls.

In Navadvipa there was a particular young brahmana,

who was the leader of the dacoits. That leader ofdacoits saw the opulent ornaments on the body of SriNityananda and desired to steal them. Thinking in thisway, he began to travel with Nityananda with a desireto steal His ornaments. Realizing that Sri Nityanandawas living alone at the house of Hiranya Pandita, thatleader of dacoits along with his fellow dacoits waited atnight fully prepared in a solitary place near the houseof Hiranya Pandita. They began to contemplate whowould take which ornament of Nityananda. But by thewill of Sri Nityananda, the dacoits soon fell asleep. When

they woke early the next morning to the sound of thecrows, they hastily hid their weapons at some place andreturned to their respective home while blaming eachother.

On the next night the dacoits first worshiped goddessChandi with great pomp by offering her wine and flesh, and after collecting various weapons and wearingkavacas, or protective amulets, they surrounded thehouse of Nityananda at the dead of night. But contraryto their expectations they found innumerable, fullyprepared, fierce-looking soldiers who were constantly

chanting the name of Hari were guarding the house ofNityananda. They became greatly astonished to see thisand after making various arguments among themselvesthey concluded that there is no hope of their success onthat particular night and left. When on the third night the dacoits entered into

the residence of Sri Nityananda, they immediately losttheir sight and started falling into filthy pits and thornybushes. At that moment Lord Indra began to showerheavy rain and storm there by making the lives of thedacoits miserable. After this incident the leader of thedacoits had a change of heart, so he took shelter atthe lotus feet of Nityananda and prayed for his own
