PoemPoemPoemPoem

When we first arrived in NZ,

We went straight to our bed.

Windy Wellington was amazing,

The whole time we were just gazing.

After three days our travel went on,

Our excitement was so strong!

Our host families awaited us,

And we drove home in the family bus.

Gibbs and Millar welcomed us in school,

They are super cool!

We had lots of different classes,

In Marine Science we learnt much about sea grasses.

In English Mrs Berl started to lisp

And the chicken in hospitality had to be crisp.

Outdoor Education Camp was the best

Kayaking and hiking without any rest!

Without Countdown we would have stayed slim

Maybe we should have gone to the gym.

The buses are the biggest shit,

In Hamburg they are a real hit!

However, we had the best time of our lives

And we aren’t looking forward to our flights.

We hope we will all stay in touch,

New Zealand we will miss you so much!

My super Chocolate chip Cookies:

120 g Butter, soft

70 g brown sugar

100 g white sugar

200 g flour

1 egg

1 teaspoon Vanilla essence

½ teaspoon backing powder

50/70 g hazelnuts crashed (depends on how much you want)

Half a packet of chocolate chips

Melt the butter till it’s soft and put all the sugar with the hazelnuts in it. Stir it well and put the egg in, after that follows the Vanilla essence. Mix the flour, the chocolate chips and the backing powder together in a separate bowl and put one spoon of it in the mixture and stir it in. Continue that till all the flour is in the dough. When the dough is not thick enough put more flour in. Heat up your oven to 180 degrees. Prepare a plate with baking paper. Use a spoon to put out walnut big pieces of the dough and put them on the plate. Let the cookies bake for 12-15 minutes. It can take longer but always watch them because they get cooked really fast. If you want them chewy just put them in for 13-14 minutes.

Now enjoy <3

KAIKOURA AND ITS MUSSELSKAIKOURA AND ITS MUSSELSKAIKOURA AND ITS MUSSELSKAIKOURA AND ITS MUSSELS

Friday

Jannick and I just finished a great weekend in

Kaikoura. We started around seven on Friday

morning at Jenny and Craig’s place. After about

three hours driving with his truck we reached one

of his secret Paua-places. It took us just a few

moments to get into the snorkeling gear and to

jump in the -for New Zealand standards- warm

water. It is an awesome place with heaps of Paua

and as I know now, a couple of Crays. So we found

mussels under every rock. The waves made it hard

for us to get to the really big ones, but at the end of

the snorkeling everybody had their bag full.

We reached the really professionally

equipped clubhouse in the afternoon and

had a short lunch break before we left for a

scuba dive in the bay where the Pier is. Our

first dive was pretty average, “shitsoup” to

say it in Kiwi words. We swam back up to

the surface, while Craig got some Crays.

One Hectors Dolphin had a look around;

the sea was alive this day, dolphins

everywhere, a lot of plankton in the water,

feeding fish and seabirds.

Our second dive that day was near the

rocks. We saw the plankton when we

jumped in and we saw the fish feeding on

it. The visibility was much better, but still not perfect, even for NZ conditions, but we got some Crays

and enjoyed the marine live around us.

It was nice to have Cray and Paua for tea with all the

club members.

Saturday

Page 25: Nayland college international student yearbook 2014 part 1 of 2

We headed to Black Rock in front of Goose Bay. The visibility was so bad that we decided to stay in

the boat; the risk of losing each other was too high. We had a good snorkel for Paua at the ramp, found

the rock Zac told us about and had a nice play with a seal.

In the evening we went to get some shells with Jason. We had really high visibility, but it wasn´t good

for Pauas. The seaweed made it hard to reach the rocks, the light was too low and we found just some

small ones. So we came back after just an hour and enjoyed the nice warm beds at the clubhouse.

Sunday

On Sunday morning we started with a good breakfast. Afterwards we went to the same rocks, where

we had been with Jason with the same fleet. The underwater structure there is fantastic and there were

lots of Crays, but it was hard to find some big ones. It was a great catching practice for us.

After that we cleaned the clubhouse, packed our gear and went back home to Nelson.

Stage Challenge If you have the opportunity to do stage challenge, then go for it. The first step is

the audition, you will learn a small part of a dance and in a few days you will have to show it in front of the judges. When you are in, you will have to practise a lot

and after a while, the practises will annoy you but it is worth it. One day before the show case, you will have a dress rehearsal. The costumes are amazing and the

make-up looks fantastic. On the day it will be stressful, we had to carry our own stage settings and build it up on the stage for practising. When we got in the hall, we had to hurry up the whole time. We started with the Make-up and hair and it took the whole day. One girl had to put on make-up on our faces for four hours without a break. We also had meetings but that weren’t really meetings. We just had fun and danced as it would be a party. After everything was done, like our Make-up and hair, we had to put on our dresses. In the evening the show case

started and we had to give everything. Our facials were big and we enjoyed the whole dance. In the end Garin College won. We got second and Waimea got third. The main thing was that we had fun and that we bet Waimea. All in all the whole

experience with stage challenge was amazing, you will love it.

On our winter camp we

went to the Cobb range.

We had good

weather all 3 days and

I really enjoyed the

nature. We slept

outside at Diamond

Lake and went up Mt.

Locket.

Because we couldn’t get water everywhere we had to

get it from the places we

could like little springs and

lakes.

THE HAKA

Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka ora!

Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka ora!

Tenei te tangata puhuru huru

Nana nei i tiki mai

Whakawhiti te ra

A upa ... ne! ka upa ... ne!

A upane kaupane whiti te ra!

Hi!

“THE MEANING OF THE HAKA”

The Haka used to be a war dance between two tribes. But the word "haka" simply means a dance, or a song accompanied by dance.

While there are many variations between the types of war dance the common feature is that they are all performed with weapons.

Succinctly put, there was a challenge from the tangata whenua or tribe from that area, followed by a response from the manuhiri or visiting party.

The encounter concluded with a tangata whenua performing a haka peruperu. The visitors would then respond with their own haka. Following speeches by both parties, they each moved together to hongi, the traditional greeting of pressing noses.

The elaborate form of the traditional challenge is not often seen these days. It is largely reserved for special occasions such as visits by senior dignitaries. However, the principles that underpin the traditional rituals are still retained in a modern form.

“Rugby in NZ is like football in Brazil”Already

before my stay here I was sure I wanted to

learn how to play it even though that meant

I wasn’t able to play football for more than 8

months. But I’m glad that I decided for

rugby as a new experience. When I scored

my first try I was really happy and they

called me “Super Mario”. However, I won’t

be able to continue playing in Germany

But that makes it even more special. I will

never forget it.

Night has fallen over middle earth. In the pale moon light the lonely mountain reflects in the

surface of the white chocolate-crème lake. Just as a dragon passes slowly over the lonely

mountain, festivities are going on in the chocolate ruins of dale. It is multicultural; such a

gathering has hardly been seen before. There are Men, dwarfs, elves, hobbits and more. However,

there is a subspecies of hobbits, known as “Wild Hobbits” or short “Wobbits”.

They brought a rebuilt of the situation in a dream of chocolate, sugar and cream.

To do the same you need: (for 30 pancakes)

3 cups of milk

3 eggs

6 tablespoons of butter/ margarine (melted)

3 cups of all-purpose flour

1 cup unsweetened cacao powder

¾ cup of sugar

1½ teaspoon of baking soda

1½ teaspoon of salt

500ml cream

250g white chocolate

A small bit of dark chocolate

First combine milk, eggs and butter in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. In a different bowl do

the same for flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda and salt. Now add milk-egg-butter mixture and

combine. Fry pancakes in a pan. While doing so you can start to whip the crème. Also the white

chocolate needs to be melted. When chocolate and crème are ready combine them. Now pile

pancakes in the order: plate – pancake – cream – pancake – pancake – crème - … until there are no

pancakes left. So it basically is a pancake sandwich with cream ;) (If the pancakes are still warm,

the lake the build itself. Otherwise just use some leftover cream.) Last but not least draw the lonely

mountain and a dragon with leftover cream on top pancake. Place the bit of dark chocolate on the

bottom of the white chocolate-crème lake to finish off your creation.

Being an international from overseas everything on the other side of the

world, in down-under, seems to be the other way round!

New Zealand impresses us strangers. With its endless nature, the

people’s relaxed attitude, the extraordinary animals and the extreme

special and unique way of living it is like a charmed land to us.

In my time in Nelson at Nayland College I learned a lot.

It is nice to know some Kiwi-slang now!

I enjoyed all my subjects which I had at Nayland.

But the one I found the most interesting and different from the ones in

Germany was Outdoor Ed. I have never slept in a shelter built by myself

before, it was an awesome and cold experience!

Later lying in the grass and looking at the stars made me realise how

small we are, but I also learned how important we still can be for other

people! That’s what my friends from Nayland are to me!

All Blacks in Wellington

By Lea Hauschild

In August 2013 I went with Saskia to the All Blacks Game in Wellington. We drove to Picton and

from there we took the ferry to Wellington to see the All Blacks vs. Australia in the Westpac

Stadium. The game started at 7:30 but before there was some entertainment. The game was

really cool and we won 15 to 6! It was an amazing experience and I would love to see them

again. The atmosphere was great because everyone cheered the All Blacks.

Night has fallen over middle earth. In the pale moon light the lonely mountain reflects in the

surface of the white chocolate-crème lake. Just as a dragon passes slowly over the lonely

mountain, festivities are going on in the chocolate ruins of dale. It is multicultural; such a

gathering has hardly been seen before. There are Men, dwarfs, elves, hobbits and more. However,

there is a subspecies of hobbits, known as “Wild Hobbits” or short “Wobbits”.

They brought a rebuilt of the situation in a dream of chocolate, sugar and cream.

To do the same you need: (for 30 pancakes)

3 cups of milk

3 eggs

6 tablespoons of butter/ margarine (melted)

3 cups of all-purpose flour

1 cup unsweetened cacao powder

¾ cup of sugar

1½ teaspoon of baking soda

1½ teaspoon of salt

500ml cream

250g white chocolate

A small bit of dark chocolate

First combine milk, eggs and butter in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. In a different bowl do

the same for flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda and salt. Now add milk-egg-butter mixture and

combine. Fry pancakes in a pan. While doing so you can start to whip the cream. Also the white

chocolate needs to be melted. When chocolate and crème are ready combine them. Now pile

pancakes in the order: plate – pancake – cream – pancake – pancake – cream - … until there are no

pancakes left. So it basically it is a pancake sandwich with cream ;) (If the pancakes are still warm,

the lake the build itself. Otherwise just use some leftover cream.) Last but not least draw the lonely

mountain and a dragon with leftover cream on top pancake. Place the bit of dark chocolate on the

bottom of the white chocolate-cream lake to finish off your creation.

New Zealand has sweeeeet Food

Normally, I don’t eat much - I just haven’t got enough time - I have important things to

do!!!

And the boring German food I get at home supports that very well. Thus, before I came to

NZ, I never weight more than 50 kgs!

But the tasty, unhealthy food here finally got me to eat more; But not just sweet stuff ,

I found out that, inspite of my prejudice, New Zealand food is very different from

American or English food. It has its own character which I cannot really describe- it is

more healthy than fastfood, but has still everything that is needed to make it not boring.

But the breakfast and the lunch- these were the best part for me.

In Germany, I just had some unhealthy cereals for breakfast- still better than nothing, but

I felt like I was missing something. And here, I found it: The taste of jam in the morning, a

mix of rice crispies and muesli, and warm toast were a relief for me.

Lunch had always been a pain- I hate German bread, no matter what any greenie wants

to try. Here, I got a terrific sandwich and chips- my favourite snack!

From all the things I will be missing when I’m back in Germany, I believe the New

Zealand food will be my sweetest memory.

Abel Tasman National Park

I have been to Abel Tasman National Park with a friend of mine and his father for a

two day trip and we really had a lot of fun kayaking and walking!

About Abel Tasman:

Abel Tasman National Park is a national park located at the north end of the South Island of

New Zealand. It is named after Abel Tasman, who in 1642 became the first European explorer

to sight New Zealand. Abel Tasman National Park is also New Zealand's smallest national park,

but it’s anyway a paradise!

My Experience:

My experience in Abel Tasman National Park lasted two days: during the first day we have been

Page 48: Nayland college international student yearbook 2014 part 1 of 2

kayaking for six hours for “Marahau” (south) to “Bark Bay” (north). I had never been kayaking before and the experience was really great but we also got very tired! We slept in the hut at Bark Bay and at dawn we left to go all the way back to Marahau walking. We walked for eight hours and in the end we were really tired but happy because the experience was really great and I will never forget it!

3 Days in Middle Earth

My time here at Nayland College was just amazing! I met new people, made friends and got to

know new subjects. Marine Science, Outdoor ED, most of the highlights of my stay were during

trips with these Subjects! Either the camp in Kahurangi, where we slept outside in shelters, or

the trip to the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park, all the great people together with the great

Landscape formed unforgettable memories!

But the most awesome experience was really the OED

camp in the Kahurangi National Park. A three day camp in

the mountains of New Zealand’s, second largest national

park.

The trip began with a two hours’ drive to the park, with a

break at the famous European bakery in Motueka. We

grabbed our stuff and hiked up to Sylvester Hutt, the area

we were staying the two nights. We have built our shelter,

it was hard work, but in the night we were protected from the cold wind.

On our second day we made a big trip to a lake

called Lake Lilli, where we have had our lunch.

On the way back we crested the side of a valley

and reached so Iron Lake, our group was pretty

exhausted when we reached the top and we

have almost no power left at all. But there was

still a little bit of walking left until we reached

the Hutt. Everything looked like in movie The Hobbit, which was actually partially filmed in the

Kahurangi ! This night, everyone had a good sleep despite the cold.

The sunrise at the next morning was stunning! It was so beautiful

and everyone was sitting or standing outside the Hutt and their

shelters to watch it. After the breakfast we packed up our stuff and

got ready for the hike back to the vans, where we arrived about 2 ½

hours later.

A really awesome trip ended, and we saw some of the nicest places in the national park, which

were really, really, amazing! That was definetly one of my best experiences ever, which I could only

make here!

Thanks to everyone in the time, it was awesome!!!

Bone Carving in Nelson Back when the Maori didn‘t yet have a way to write down their history and legends, art was used to pass them on. One of these art forms is bone carving. The traditional designs, like the hei matau (fish hook) which represents strength, good luck and safe travel across water or the twist which is an eternity symbol. When I first found out about bone carving, I was really intrigued. You don‘t really find anything similar to this in Germany and I was especially fascinated by the meanings associated behind the individual carvings. So, naturally, that was something I really wanted to try while I was in Nelson. And I was lucky - I found a bone carver in 87 Green Street, Tahunanui. Bone Carving is a lot easier than it seems to be at first. At the bone carving workshop, we started off with collecting our ideas of what we wanted our design to look like. I really liked the hei matau shape and decided to combine that with the symbol for eternity, the twist. As soon as we had finished a first sketch of our design (don‘t worry though, you really don‘t have to be a good artist to do that!), we drew a clean version onto a piece of cow bone. We were told that the bones weren‘t bleached with chemicals which is why they look more natural and not as white and plasticy as some of the ones you can find in shops do.

And then we got down to the actual

business! First, we had to saw around our outline to get our piece out of the big chunk of bone. Most of it was just sawing straight down but some parts were a bit tricky. During this part, the most important thing to keep in mind was to always hold the saw at the same angle

Page 52: Nayland college international student yearbook 2014 part 1 of 2

or else you could get an uneven piece of bone which would make certain designs, like the spiral, impossible. The next part is grinding off as much as possible with a machine, trying to get as close to your outlines as possible. That‘s still rough, though, so you have to use sandpaper to work on the details. A lot of sandpaper. And it will take forever. But even if you can‘t see any progress while sanding, it‘s definitely worth it. For now, you only have to do a bit of sanding because, in my case, you still have to work on stuff like the twist or the space between the fish hook and the twist. For that, we used a dental drill because it‘s really small and helps you work on really small details, like the holes in the twist. For this part, it‘s really important to keep your hand still. If you move, even the slightest, you will lose control over the drill and that‘s really, really bad. It happened to me when I was trying to get the space between the two twists, so the bone carver had to take over and save my carving. This part is really tricky, to be fair. You have to drill off half of the bone on each sides of the drill and then use the saw to get through. After that, I was almost done! All that was left for me to do was sanding. And sanding. And more sanding. -for about half an hour. But it was worth the effort because my carving went from still quite rough to almost perfect. Afterwards we polished our carvings and attached a string to them so we could wear them - and we were done! After almost three hours of pure FUN! By Helen Anderer

New Zealand is the most beautiful country in the world

In this article I would like to write about my experience

in the holidays. I started my journey on the 20th January 2013. My last

day in NZ was the 27th of September 2013 were I flew back to Germany.

My time got every time better and better after I arrived therefore I was really sad about to say good bye...But anyway I have to look back to one the best moments I had in New Zealand. Not only the school time was awesome but also the holidays were perfect. I enjoyed the two trips so much so that I would like to write about them.

In the first holidays I went on a South-Island Tour were we spent 10 days travelling through the South Island.

Here I would like to show you some pictures because it is the easiest way to show it. The first picture was taken on the Fox Glacier were I flew up on the Glacier with a helicopter. It was an interesting experience because I only saw Glaciers on the television and not in real. The walk on ice was good to learn something new.

On the next picture you can see the Milford Sounds. These special waterfalls and deep cliffs... brilliant!

Steepest Street in the world... it was so steep that the cars could not stop in the middle of the road so that they had to drive fast up the hill. It was so exhausting to walk up so I not even tried to run... At the Elm Wildlife Tour I experienced the animals in the wild. I really like animals and this was much better than to see animals in a zoo. Also we had the

chance to see baby Fur Seals and the big Sea Lions from the near.

Page 54: Nayland college international student yearbook 2014 part 1 of 2

One of the last pictures I took was at the Moeraki Boulders. It is so interesting that the nature can form so many different things out of stone or in general out of something. All in all this tour is an awesome tour to see the beautiful and different landscape from New Zealand!

I spent the second holidays on the North Island for 8 days. One of my favourite things was to surf down the massive sand dunes at 90 mile beach. To ride up to Cape Reinga with a bus at the long bright beach was really cool.

On the following day I saw in the Bay of Islands a really big group of dolphins. It was incredible! Hundreds of dolphins.

In Auckland I visited Rangitoto Island a dead volcano was I could experience the lava caves and the view over the crater.

Although I saw the colourful Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland and the famous Waitomo glow-worm cave. It was fantastic and it looked like if you look in the stars. The cave was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

On the last day on the North Island I visited the Hobbiton Movie Set before I flew back to Nelson. It was quite cool to see a film set and be right there. I really like all the small

details at the set. We learned some secrets about the place and took some cool pictures. Now my time is over...I will miss NZ the wonderful country but I can look back every time and watch my pictures I took in New Zealand.

How I find the most special place on earth for me and my experience is New Zealand and still is and will be in my mind forever, like my friends and Nayland College who made my time here a special time for me! Thank you so much: D I will come back sometime and visit the beautiful country again! I hope we see us there bye for now and see you later…
