Malaysia plans sanctuary for captive tigers

KUALA LUMPUR, 15 Jan—Malaysiaplans to set up a large enclosed naturalhabitat for captive tigers, a seniorwildlife official said Friday, an ambitiousproposal that has raised concerns amongconservationists.

The authorities say the reserve willprovide a good home for tigers rescuedfrom poor living conditions, butcampaigners argue the focus should beon protecting the animals in the wild.

“It is still at the preliminary stage. Itwill be an enclosed area big enough forthe big cats to roam,” a wildlife andnational parks department official toldAFP on condition of anonymity.

“Tigers in the park will be fed andit will be a tourist attraction.”

A final decision on the programme, which will be located in peninsularMalaysia, will be made by the end of the

year, the official said. The plan was prompted by the

discovery of 27 captive tigers living inpoor conditions in a zoo in southernMalacca state, the official said.

He played down fears of poachersraiding the tiger park, saying it would be“enclosed and guarded.” But WilliamSchaedla, regional director of TRAFFICSoutheast Asia, which monitors trade inwildlife, urged the authorities toconcentrate on battling poaching ratherthan breeding tigers.—Internet

MADRID, 15 Jan—Moderate drinking of beercan cut the risk of diabetes and high blood pressureand even help people lose weight, Spanish doctorssay.

Spanish researchers say combining ale or lagerwith exercise and a healthy Mediterranean diethigh in fish, fruit and vegetables and olive oil canprovide health benefits, Britain’s Daily Telegraphreported Thursday.

Beer contains folic acid, vitamins, iron andcalcium and offers the same health benefits alreadycredited to moderate wine drinking, the researchersfound. “Moderate beer consumption is associatedwith nutritional and health benefits,” Dr RamonEstruch, the lead researcher, said.

“It does not necessarily mean weight gain sinceit has no fat and calorie content is low.”

He contrasted the culture of drinking smallglasses of beer with healthy foods in Spain to bingedrinking in Britain.

“Beer drinkers here do not resemble Britons, who drink large quantities, almost without movingfrom one spot, while eating chips and sausages,” hesaid.—Internet

Cholera epidemic in Haitibegins to stabilize

PORT-AU-PRINCE, 15 Jan—The cholera epidemic inHaiti has begun to show signs of stabilizing, despitethe fact it is now present in all the regions of thisCaribbean country, the doctors in Haiti said Friday.

“Well the situation right now is very optimistic, itis stabilizing, we see in many parts that the numbersare slowly diminishing, including for example in Port-au-Prince, but we have to be very very careful andcontinue monitoring the situation,” Sylvain Groulxtold Xinhua in Petion Ville.

According to him, the situation “is not perfect, butcertainly we see that the number (of cases) isdiminishing” as now there are not “the high numbersthere were a few weeks ago.”

“Every day people is coming in and need to betreated, however now instead of coming by hundredsof thousands per day they are now diminishing andthey come between 50 or 60 people per day to betreated instead of 150 per day,” he said.

Toxic chemicals found in many US pregnant women

LOS ANGELES, 15 Jan—A new study has foundthat many pregnantwomen in the UnitedStates have a number ofpotentially toxic orcancer-causing chemi-cals in their bodies.

In the studyinvolving 268 women, researchers at theUniversity of California,San Francisco (UCSF)analyzed data from theCentres for DiseaseControl and Prevention.

Study results showthat almost all participantshad detectable levels ofeight types of chemicalsin their blood or urine, including flame retardantsand perchlorates found inrocket fuel.

Other chemicals

include pesticides, carexhaust pollution, PCBs(toxic industrial chemicalbanned in 1979), PFCs(used in non- stickcookware), andphthalates (used in manyfragrances and plastics).

Some of thechemicals detected in thestudy have been linked tohealth problems in otherstudies, finds the study.

The findings werepublished on Friday byUSA Today.

Many of thesechemicals pass throughthe placenta and canconcentrate in the fetus,

said lead author TraceyWoodruff, director of theUCSF’s Programme onReproductive Health andEnvironment.

Other researchershave found some of thesechemicals in babies’umbilical cords, according to Woodruff.

She called onCongress to pass tougherenvironmental laws toreduce such exposure.

But the AmericanChemistry Council(ACC), an industrygroup, said the findingsaren’t a cause forconcern.—Xinhua

LONDON, 15 Jan — An extensive studyof tree growth rings says there could bea link between the rise and fall of pastcivilizations and sudden shifts inEurope’s climate. A team of researchers

based their findings on data from 9,000wooden artifacts from the past 2,500years. They found that periods of warm, wet summers coincided with prosperity, while political turmoil occurred duringtimes of climate instability.

The findings have been publishedonline by the journal Science. “Lookingback on 2,500 years, there are exampleswhere climate change impacted humanhistory,” co-author Ulf Buntgen, apaleoclimatologist at the Swiss FederalResearch Institute for Forest, Snow andLandscape, told the Science website.
