    Two Nawa students, Mark Semba

    (09) and Francesca Jones (09), have their

    work on display at the Old City Hall in

    Redding. They were in the final 60 pieces

    of work which were picked from over 300

    entries in the Shasta Arts Council annual

    Juried High School Art Competition. Of

    these, 14 were classed as winning entries,

    and received special attention, and Mark

    Sembas piece, Little Boy was given the

    US Bank Sponsor Award, which came with

    a $75 check, much to his delight.This years jurors were north state

    artists Nancy Lynn Toolan and Troy

    Hawkins and they were very impressed by

    the work they saw. We had a really hard

    time narrowing it down, Hawkins said.

    There was not a bad piece in the bunch ...

    The quality of the show was superior to any

    Ive judged before.

    A total of eight students submitted

    work for the competition, and although Rick

    Albright-Brolin (10) Nick Carlson (10),

    Chris Hayden (09), Jonathan Inamura

    (11), Lawrence Peverini (08) and AndreaSosa-Locicero (08) didnt make the final

    cut, those who were able to went along to

    the awards ceremony to show their support

    for their fellow students.

    Art instructor Colleen Chess was full

    of praise for all the students. It takes a

    lot of courage to put a piece of your own

    work in for a competition. I hope they al

    feel as proud of themselves as I do of them

    Hopefully the students success this yea

    will be a catalyst for more even students to

    enter next year.
