LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

”When I see birches bend to left and right Across the lines of straighter darker trees,I like to think some boy’s been swinging them. But swinging doesn’t bend them down to stay...” - “Birches” by Robert Frost

Dear Fellow Retirees and Friends:

We hope this Newsletter finds you and your family safe and in good spirits.

The NEREA Nominating Committee has nominated and recommended four NEXCOM retirees as NEREA Directors: Tom Burke, Tom Williams, Peter Bratke, and Milton Bailey, to fill vacancies created by the resignations of Secretary Nancy Collette, Director Pete Peugeot, and the passing of Director Mario Canu and Ex-Officio Executive Board Member John Brown. We salute the service rendered by Nancy, Pete, Mario and John in support of NEXCOM and NEREA over the decades. Their contributions to NEREA and its members were invaluable. We look forward to working with our new BOD Directors.

Cost of Living (COLA) increases for, 2021, and 2022 have been announced: 5.9% for social security recipients and 5.9% for NEXCOM retirees. Social Security recipients will see the increase in their January 2022 SSA payments while NEXCOM retirees will see the increase in December 2021.

You should have already received information for the new plan from Aetna.

This year saw an increase in member families/spouses requesting information about the benefits their family member/spouse are entitled to upon the death, illness or disability of their NEXCOM retiree. These requests are forwarded to NEXCOM HR for their review and response to the family member/spouse. We appreciate NEXCOM HR’s quick response to these requests. OAKLAND It’s November and the rainy season has begun. Last week......in 24 hours......we received 5 inches of rain. This record helped to put out many California wild fires.

In July 2021 we learned Capt Wayne Gerstenberger passed away. Capt Gerstenberger had 3 tours of duty in the Navy Exchange System: OIC Navy Exchange Atsugi, Director Audit & Inspection at NEXCOM and OIC NEXCOM West Coast Branch. He was an original member of the NEREA Oakland Chapter.

After he retired from the U.S. Navy, Capt Gerstenberger worked for the San Francisco Municipal Railway as a SeniorExecutive. He had a long career with SF Muni into his golden years

I first met Capt Gerstenberger in 2007 at a NEREA Oakland lunch. He had 27 years in the Supply Corps. His last duty station was in Oakland and he settled in the SF Bay Area. Capt Gerstenberger was unassuming, was straight forward & an amazing leader.

In memory of Capt Wayne Gerstenberger a contribution will be made to the NEREA Scholarship Fund

TIDEWATER It’s difficult to write for our Chapter when we are not having meetings, however, I feel confident that COVID will allow us to get back into our monthly meetings in April 2022.

We are having a drive thru food drive in November and December 2021. Barbara Willis is our Food Drive Coordinator. Marian Nelson is in charge of our communications and Barbara Divjak is our Treasure. They always do a great job, thank you very much.

In 2020 our Chapter sent 372 birthday cards, 37 get well cards and 14 sympathy cards. The post office is crazy nuts about us.

Until next time, stay well, be safe and happy.

Raye EatonPresident NEW ENGLAND Well folks, we were finally able to have a NEREA meeting after 18 months on 26 July. It sure was good to see everyone. We had a turnout of 16 members. Jeff Kalousdian didn’t plan on attending but stopped by to say a surprise hello to everyone. We also had hellos from Julia Kinsella, Clare Boiani, Connie Flanagan and Kathy Martin,

Previously, whatever monies we had left in our account was donated to the scholarship fund rather than having the bank eat it up with service charges each month. We restarted building a new account at this meeting. Fred Nalle won the 50/50 raffle and donated his winnings back to the scholarship fund. Our meeting was a “Christmas in July” theme. Several folks donated items that were raffled off. Thank you Nancy, Martha, Judy, Pat and Ann. Our raffle raised approximately $150 for the Scholarship Fund. We had a ton of what we call give aways. Good stuff to get out of the house.

We did discuss contact information for Human Resources as personnel has changed due to retirement etc. Also the fact we would no longer receive monthly pay statements for those that have direct deposit. Some were not receiving the NEREA Newsletter and given a form to subscribe.

Pauline Schobert did mention that we would be holding an election of Officers at our October meeting.

That’s it for now. Hope everyone is safe and well.

DID YOU KNOW

1923 Ships service stores were given official sanction by Navy regulations and commanding officers were responsible for

ensuring that they were run in accordance with sound business practices. Such vague direction resulted in retail

practices and procedures which varied greatly from store to store.

1961 The Secretary of the Navy assigned the operation of Enlisted Men’s Clubs (E-4 and below) and Navy Guest Houses

and hotel/motels (Navy Lodges) to the mission of the Navy Resale System.

1967 NAS Albany GA (previously Turner Air Force Base) was re-commissioned. This Air Station was the main operational

base for the Navy’s North American RA-5C Vigilante Attack Wing until those operations were moved in 1974 to

NAS Key West Florida. NEX NAS Albany 060-062 closed 6/30/1974.

1970 205 NEX service stations sold 187 million gallons of gasoline.

1977 NEX Alameda held a two-day Truck Load Sale which saw $8,000 worth of appliances sold in those two days. Vendors

supplied merchandise, representatives to demonstrate products and the trucks.

1980 The Deferred Payment Plan was implemented, giving military families the option of a credit account at the exchange.

1992 NEX private label products, which included 378 consumable, 500 soft line and 33 hard line selections, generated sales

of $35 million. NEX private label film became a million-dollar program as customers bought 750,000 rolls of film,

60% more than initially anticipated.

2007 NEREA’s 13th Annual Convention was held in Denver CO, 14-19 May.

2010 NEX Oceana hosted a Bridal Event to show customers products and services available for a wedding. As a direct

result of the event, nine weddings were scheduled. The Floral Shop completed 17 weddings in the first two quarters

and the number of weddings increased 35 percent over weddings during 2009.

2017 The Department of Defense granted online exchange shopping privileges to all honorably discharged Veterans of the

U.S. Military.

2018 A newly branded ships store model/training store at the Naval Technical Training Center SH A-School, NAS Meridian

MS opened. NEXCOM’s Ships Stores Program and associates from NEX Meridian completed the reset following a

complete renovation of the store.

2019 NEREA awarded nine scholarships to grandchildren of NEREA members and children of active NEX/NEXCOM

associates.

2021 NEXCOM welcomes it’s seventh business line, the Navy Gateway Inns & Suites (NGIS) effective 1 October.

NEW CONUS RETIREE MEDICAL PLAN EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2022By now, you’ve probably read a lot about the new Retiree Medical Plan coming January 1, 2022. The plan is a Medicare Advantage Plan with Prescription Drugs (MAPD) with an Extended Service Area (ESA). Aetna has mailed eligible retirees several mailers, an information kit, and held numerous retiree conference calls to answer your questions. The new CONUS retiree medical plan, better known as MAPD, will replace the current retire medical plan for those who are living in the United States, enrolled in Medicare Part A & B, and are over the age of 65. If you meet this eligibility, you will be automatically enrolled in MAPD. You will only need one insurance card for this plan. Because the MAPD plan has an extended access area, you can go to any provider that takes Medicare and will file Aetna medical claims. You will no longer have to coordinate benefits with Medicare and Aetna. Aetna will do this for you. If you are currently enrolled in the Maintenance Choice drug program, you no longer have to fill your prescriptions with CVS Pharmacy. If you travel anywhere in the United States and need to go to an

Emergency Room or you need Urgent Care, you are covered. You even have access to the wellness program, Silver Sneakers, which is only available to participants in a Medicare Advantage Plan. All of this for a lesser premium than you pay today. Do you have a computer, tablet or smart phone? Great! Head on over to www.nafhealthplans.com, an informational website with an entire retiree section dedicated to answering your questions about MAPD. Still have questions or you would rather talk to a person, call the Aetna Member Services Center at 1-800-367-6276 (9am – 7pm ET), or contact NEXCOM Retiree Services at 1-888-639-2363. We think you are going to like this plan. . . Less worries. Less hassle. Less you pay in premiums. More time to enjoy your retirement!

Note: This plan is not available to retirees living overseas or pre-65 retirees; for those of you with Tricare, please reach out to your Tricare representative with any questions regarding your Tricare plan.

Please let us know if you want to help us save money by sending an email to Tom Cunningham at: [email protected], asking him to delete your name from our mailing list. This will both save us money and help with the environment.
