On behalf of the city of Palma, I wish to welcome you to an island in the Mediterranean that throughout its entire history has been characterised by the ongoing transit of a host of civilisations, cultures, peoples… All of this has contributed to shaping a city which is familiar with the sea, which excitedly awaits the arrival of people and merchandise, which deposits its hope and joy in the departure of ships laden with local products and on those that at some point sought better fortune in other places.

Over time, the arts of fishing, its associated trades and the construction of traditional boats have paved the way for other professional opportunities as a result of the rise in tourism, specifically, nautical tourism.

I am pleased to be able to welcome you at a time in which the different sectors within the local economy are joining forces

to identify the potential that the city of Palma can offer to everyone who visits our city, and especially to those who arrive by sea on their own boat or on charter boats.

From the time the Romans founded the city, Palma has always had a port. In that age, the city of Palma extended no further than what today is the Almudaina quarter. A deep-water delta flanked the city on its western side; that is, the sea encroached upon the area that today is Avenida Antonio Maura, the Paseo del Borne and Calle Unión. In fact, in the 19th century a Roman anchor was found right in front of the Teatro Principal (Main Theatre). This must have been the exact site where the current Riera stream ended, which ran through what is now the Rambla. This delta must have been used as a quay during the Roman and Muslim periods. Recently, during a building project on the Paseo el Borne – around Calle Constitución– a quay dating from the Al-Andalus period was discovered. It was precisely during the Islamic period when the shipyards were built right in front of the Emir’s palace, the current Almudaina palace. Even today, we can see the arch that led into these shipyards in the s’Hort del Rei gardens. Later, other shipyards were built outside the walled Muslim area located in the square that today bears their name, next to the Consulate of the Sea. Also during this period, the Porto Pi cove began to be used as a natural port and refuge for ships in bad weather.

In the 13th century, after the Kingdom of Mallorca rejoined the Christian fold thanks to King Jaime I, Palma’s trade received a new impetus, and new facilities were immediately required. Back in 1270, a manmade quay had been built in front of the Almudaina palace, the embryo of what over time would become Palma’s old quay. This new quay was complemented by the one in Porto Pi; that is, the boats unloaded their cargo in front of the city walls and spent the night in Porto Pi. For the safety of the boats, the Porto Pi cove was closed using a chain attached at either end to the Porto Pi and Paraires defence towers, which flanked the entrance to the cove.

There was another quay for unloading cargo on the southern end of Palma, across from the Baluarte del Príncipe. Very close to those quay was another little cove that was also used as a small natural port which has been known as Es Portitxol since mediaeval times. Both the quay and the cove were owned by

the Knights Templar, who, as is common knowledge, played an instrumental role in the conquest and division of the island of Mallorca. The headquarters of the commandery of the Order was located very close to the current Baluarte del Príncipe, on the site known as Castell del Temple (Temple Castle), and thus the quay was used for the Templar fleet to load and unload its cargo near its fortress.

In 1319, King Sancho of Mallorca handed over tracts of land in Porto Pi to the courts of the Kingdom of Mallorca to become shipyards, as the city’s facilities had become too small. The ships that arrived in the Palma port but did not hail from the Kingdom paid an anchoring tax (ancoratge). Thanks to this tax, we know that ships from the Crown of Aragon, mainly from Catalonia and Valencia; from the Crown of Castile; from the Kingdom of France; and from the Italian city-states were the ones who most heavily used the Palma port as a cargo redistribution centre or as a port of call on the way to their final destinations.

The port of Palma remained largely unaltered until the 20th century, with the exception of the old quay, which gradually expanded throughout the Middle Ages and the modern period. It is starting in the 20th century, with the advent of industrialisation and tourism, when the Palma port would change its physiognomy to become the way it is today. The new quay was added to the old quay, to be followed by commercial quays, all of them designed to meet the needs of the large cargo vessels. Additionally, starting at the San Carlos jetty, a large dyke and a quay aimed to accommodate cargo loading and unloading and foreign military boats, mainly the United States’ Sixth Fleet, were built. The Jonquet quay, the San Magín dock, the Club Náutico de Palma, the Can Barbarà jetty and the Club del Mar were created, along with the ports of Portitxol, Can Pastilla, Es Molinar and Cala Gamba, all of them to keep pace with the upsurge in recreational boating. Finally, the Maritime Station (Estación Marítima) and the Paraires quay were built as the embarkation and debarkation points for travellers.

IMFOF is the abbreviation for the Municipal Institute for Training, Employment and Promotion. It was founded in 1998 with the clear goal of both generating employment and serving as an intermediary between those offering and those searching for jobs.
