How Natural Selection Works

• 1. In any population, there is variation.

• 2. Populations produce more offspring than will survive.

Natural Selection Simulation• Groups of 2-3• One person is hawk, rest are mice• Hawk has 10 seconds to catch as many mice as

possible ONE AT A TIME.• The mice that survive will “reproduce”.

• 3. Only the fittest of the offspring will survive and pass on their genes (Survival of the fittest)

• Fitness –being well adapted to the environment (best able to survive and make babies)

In conclusion…• POPULATIONS are always changing. They

evolve to become better adapted to their environment.
