Human ResourcesAccording to population census :Total population of GB in 1998 was 883,799.Population is growing annually at an estimate
rate of 2.66%.The rural population was 88.7%.The urban population was 14.3%.The average house hold size of GB is 8
person in 1998.Currently GB administration is projecting
population of GB is 1 million.
Atmospheric ResourcesThe climate of Gilgit–Baltistan varies from region to
region, surrounding mountain ranges creates sharp variations in weather. The eastern part has the moist zone of the western Himalayas, but going toward Karakoram and HinduKush the climate dries considerably.
There are towns like Gilgit and Chilas that are very hot during the day in summer yet cold at night and valleys like Astore, Khaplu , Yasin, Hunza, and Nagar, where the temperatures are cold even in summer.
Climate changes are also take place in GB.It cause threat to the fragile eco-system.The rapidly melting glacier cause habitat loss of different
species.
Atmospheric ResourcesChange in climate cause flash flood and river
bank erosion in Skardu.The weather station of Gilgit Baltistan are
located In Gilgit and Skardu
Fresh water is considered a jugular vein in the survival of humanity on earth.
The fresh water reservoirs of Gilgit-Baltistan are no less than a great blessing for the whole country.
This area has been rich potential of fresh water. Three of The world’s largest glaciers are found in Gilgit-Baltistan, . Biafo Glacier, Baltoro Glacier, and Batura Glacier. Besides these glaciers, 5,215 smaller glaciers and 2,420 glacial lakes are also located in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Water resources
Water resourcesThe water of all these glaciers flows into the
River Indus,There is a potential of producing around
52,000 MW hydroelectric powers in GB.
Forest ResourcesIn Pakistan forest resources are limited. covering
only 4.8 percent of total land area. More than 60% of the countries natural forest
resources are found in Himalaya, Hindukush and Karakoram ranges.
Alpine forests and pastures are situated above the tree line of 4000 meters and these are found mostly in the northern districts of Gilgit, Diamer, Chitral and Skardu
Forest decreasing as the people are converting them into agricultural lands it cause global warming.
Animal ResourcesGilgit Baltistan can be termed as living museum
for animal. Varieties of animals & birds like cow,
goat,sheep,bull ,yak ,Ibex, Markhore, Urial, Blue Sheep, Lynx, Snow leopard, brown and Black bears, Wolf, Fox, Marmote, Chakor, Rame Chakor.
One of the rare species Tibetan wild ass is also found in Shimshall valley of upper Hunza.
All these resources are being managed for their survival and multiplication through establishment of National Parks.
Crop ResourcesOnly 1% of GB is area is under cultivation.The crop and livestock resources are limited. However, recent efforts are being made for
producing high-yield variety of potato with an output of 85000 tones.
The principal food crops are wheat, maize, barley, potatoes, vegetables and fruits.
Crop ResourcesDifferent types of crops of GB.-Wheat- Apricot - Apple - Grapes - Pears - Peaches - Pomegranate - Cherry - Mulberry - Walnut - Almond
Wild life ResourcesWildlife sanctuary covering an area of 415
square kilometres.The wild life animals consist of snow leopard,
brown bear, lynx, Tibetan wolf, Tibetan sand fox, markhor, bharal, and Siberian ibex.
The Deosai National Park was established in 1993 to protect the survival of the Himalayan Brown Bear and its habitat.
Mineral ResourcesGemstones also known as semi-precious stones or gems, are minerals
widely used in jewelry and for ornamental purposes. Northern and western regions of Pakistan are rich in high quality gemstones.
