NATURAL RESOURCES
Chapter 2.1
EQ: How do renewable and nonrenewable natural resources
supply human needs?
VOCABULARY• Environment • Natural resources • Nonrenewable resources• Renewable resources• Minerals• Extract• Energy• Fossil fuels• Pollution• Conservation
Types of Resources• The environment is the air, water,
and land that surrounds you– What is the environment like in Key
West? A big city?
• Natural resources are the materials found in nature that people use– What natural resources do you use
every day? • Examples: soil, trees, oil
– Nonrenewable resources vs. renewable resources
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be remade,
regrown, or replaced in our lifetime.
COAL, PETROLEUM, & GASCoal, petroleum,
and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be
replenished in a short period of time.
We also know these as
fossil fuels.
MineralsMinerals are nonrenewable materials found in the earth that do not come from plants and animalsSilver Iron Ore Zinc
Copper Gold Quartz
Limestone Lead Granite
Magnesium Gems
Construction and heating
Electrical wires, computer chips, jewelry
Steel production (iron ore) for buildings and manufacturing
SO ....If nonrenewable resources are resources that
cannot be replaced in our lifetime, then
what are renewable resources?
RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time.

CONSEQUENCES & SOLUTIONS• Pollution – materials that dirty
the air, water, and soil• Conservation – planned, careful
use of natural resources– 1935 Natural Resources
Conservation Services set up by the U.S. government to help manage the use of resources in the United States•Conservation lands cannot be used
for human activities•Bureau of Land Management helps
protect certain public lands from development
