Whether they wear clothes that are simple enough, jewels will spice it up with their unique attractiveness and colors. Formation of Natural Birthstones and Gemstones

Deep within the earth, molten rock and gasses continually move against the earth's crust. It is within this extremely high pressure and temperature that diamonds and peridot are formed. Diamonds begin to crystallize in the magma 109 to 149 miles beneath the earth's surface, and peridots are formed 20 to 55 miles below. As the earth's crust continually moves, these deposits begin to work their way toward the surface.

Natural gemstones are items that have been formed by nature with no interference by man. They form in a variety of ways in many different environments from many different chemical compounds. Sapphires, rubies, tourmalines, and many more natural minerals and organic gems are found around the world. Natural gemstones are often subjected to a variety of treatments including, heat irradiation, diffusion, and others.

Categories of gemstones

In most of the cases, it is very difficult to identify the difference between a natural gem, and the artificial one. So the most important is to know the difference if you want only a natural-made stone. But they'll be the most expensive too.

There are four terms that are used to describe a gem's origin. It's useful to know what they mean when shopping.

Natural - Natural gems are pure, in the sense they have been found in nature, and not altered in any way, other than the cut and polished.

Genuine - These have also been found in nature, but have been enhanced in some way, such as temperature.

Synthetic - Synthetic gems are created in a lab which has the same physical, chemical and visual properties as natural gemstones.

Simulated - Simulated gems are also created in a lab to look like their natural gem counterparts, but have different physical, chemical and visual properties.

Why gemstones should be enhanced

Well, obviously in order to improve the appearance and make it to more saleable. Some, if not most, natural stones have what we call inclusions. These are imperfections inside the gem. There might be cracks, holes or some unwanted objects which cause cloudiness or just odd reflections.

How it will be enhanced

In order to remove these imperfections sometimes holes are drilled into the stone and the imperfection will be removed or filler substances such as oil, wax, epoxy resin will be placed inside the gemstone to fill the empty space.

Some of the other methods are also used to get rid of these imperfections. Heat treatment is often used for this purpose. Once a stone is heated to a particular temperature the inclusion might disappear forever. And sometime these inclusions will dissolve and hence the stone will be improved.
