Introduction…
For our EMPACTS project, we teamed up with
Mrs. Whaley’s 4th grade Social Studies class and
Mrs. Knight’s 4th grade Science class to teach
about natural disasters.
How, why, where and when they occur and how
to protect yourself if you are caught in one.
Project Overview
With the aid of the teachers, our team focused
on four types of natural disasters: tornadoes,
landslides, avalanches and hurricanes.
Each of us presented a mini-lesson plan in front
of a group of the class and then simulated the
natural disaster.
Community Served
This class project was
done to service the
fourth grade Social
Studies & Science
classes of Mrs. Knight &
Mrs. Whaley at Pea Ridge
Intermediate School
Learning Objectives &
Outcomes • Identify unifying principles and repeatable patterns in the
physical world and apply them to problems or issues of a
scientific nature.
• Explain the relevance of understanding the natural laws
and processes of the world and cosmos around us.
• Students can use computers proficiently.
• Students can employ a variety of sources to locate,
evaluate, and use information.
Arkansas 4th Grade

Technology Used
Methodology:
• As a team, we decided to split our lesson plan into mini-lessons
and demonstrations for the classroom, each focusing on 1 of the 4
natural disasters.
Division of Labor:
• Kimberly: developed lesson plan, hurricane simulation
• Mikaela: research, avalanche lesson and simulation
• Yochabel: research, tornado powerpoint and lesson plan
• Alyson: activity sheet, final powerpoint, landslide activity
• As a team: developed peer presentation
