Spring is here and I’m feeling the love! With such glorious weather, I’ve been spending every moment I can outside. Hope you are, too.

More and more research shows that sensible sun exposure is important to our health, especially in these latitudes where we get so little during the winter. The sun is our best source of vitamin D, which is now considered vital for bone health, and prevention of depression, cancers, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases. There’s even some evidence that vitamin D deficiency is involved in obesity and diabetes. While D3 supplements can help, sunlight is the most reliable way to generate vitamin D in your body. So don’t fear the sun! Take it gradually so you don’t burn, forgo sun-screen on your body, choose chemical-free sunscreen for your face or for prolonged exposure, and try to get at least 15 minutes of direct sunlight several times a week. And did you know that you can boost your internal sunscreen by eating antioxidant-rich foods and superfoods like astaxan-thin? You’ll find other health advice in this, our Women’s Wellness issue. In “The Hormone Balancing Act” you’ll find tips on normalizing your hor-mones at any age through diet, exercise and supplements. “Anti-Aging Skincare” introduces some new and some ancient techniques to fight wrinkles and sagging skin. “Liquid Taste Treats,” our collection of green drink recipes, will give you new ways to put health on the menu and help you maintain your youth and beauty from the inside out. Family and friend time is also important to your health, so make sure you take advantage of the opportunities that abound this month—Mother’s Day, graduations and other family events are just a few. But don’t forget you-time, especially if you are a mother who must meet both the demands of family and working outside the home. Feel free to accept some nurtur-ing. Whether you take a walk in the woods, or spend a day at the spa, enjoy some time for yourself—without guilt!

To all the moms out there, Happy Mother’s Day. We love you!

Science has never drummed up quite as effective a tranquilizing agent

as a sunny spring day.

Dear Friend, Every day, people come to see me looking for an answer to those agonizing headaches they’ve endured for years. Many have been to several doctors, tried several drugs, and have had very expensive tests. My patient, Roseann, had migraine headaches since first grade. She’d been to generalists, specialists, had CAT scans, MRI’s, and been on some powerful medications . . . all of which didn’t help. She suffered for 20 years. Another patient, Aggie, just went three weeks without a migraine for the first time in years (she hadn’t gone longer than a few days without one). All that suffering, when the answer was just removing nerve pressure in their spines. Their cases are not unusual at all. “This month I’m reaching out to people with headaches.” It bothers me that many have been told there is no answer for them, when perhaps there is. No doctor can guarantee a cure; however, chiropractic care has been shown to help countless people. And, it’s not just migraines and headaches. I’m blessed to help people with chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, just to name a few. I often see people who’ve come to me as a “last resort.” As a chiropractor, I do things differently. I’m not going to give you medications to cover up symptoms because my job is to get to the root cause of the health problems. You need to know that I don’t “cure” anyone. Your body is designed to always strive to heal itself. Sometimes, nerve interference gets in the way of that inborn striving towards health. What I do is remove nerve pressure, and allow the body to heal itself. I’m not a miracle worker; your body is the real miracle. Although all people respond differently to care, most people who see a chiropractor are satisfied. Thanks, and God Bless. Fred Rossi, D.C.

P.S. If another member of your family or a good friend wants to come in with you for this exam, we’ll do that second exam for $27.

Bring in this article by May 31st and I’ll give you a new patient exam for $67 with x-rays, paraspinal thermal imaging . . . the whole thing ($260 value). Further care is very affordable and you’ll be happy to know that we have family plans. You can call me, or Maya, at ROSSI FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC. We can help you.

Pedal for Preservation bike event. Participants will ride on the Columbia Trail, a Rail to Trail route that is known as one of the most beautiful rides in New Jersey. Riders will start and finish at West Morris Central High School, 259 Bartley Rd, Chester. The Land Conservancy of New Jersey, headquartered in Boonton, is a nonprofit member-supported organization dedicated to preserving and protecting New Jersey’s vital natural lands and drinking water resources. The Pedal for Preservation event offers the chance to team up with TLC-NJ by participating as a rider, team member, sponsor, donor or volunteer. Pay a flat registration fee or help fundraise by get-ting friends and family to sponsor your ride. Registration on the day of the event begins at 8am. According to Conservancy president David Epstein, “This family friendly off-road biking experience is geared toward riders of all biking abilities. The day will feature good food, a great ride, and fun for everyone. Best of all, riders will be pedaling to preserve the best of New Jersey—the beautiful natural lands that are so special to us all!” Proceeds from Pedal for Preservation will help fund the Land Conservancy of New Jersey’s land preservation work. Uncover Your Hidden Food Allergies

Join Christine Grasso, holistic health and nutrition coach and

yoga teacher, on May 16 from 8pm to 9:30pm for a free workshop on “The 5 ‘Healthy’ Foods That Could Be Ruining Your Health.” During the workshop, to be held at Purple Om Yoga studio, 3118 Route 10 West, Denville, Grasso will review the top five food allergens that could be

compromising your health, teach participants how to identify their problem foods and discuss some of the common side effects from hidden food allergies. Grasso believes that hid-den food sensitivities may be the culprit behind weight-loss resistance. Studies have shown that 75 percent of people in the U.S. have a food sensitivity of some kind. Common food sensitiv-ity symptoms include stomach or abdominal pain, gas and bloating, diarrhea, constipation, acid reflux, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, irritability, anxiety, fatigue and brain fog, ADD/ADHD, bone and joint pain, skin breakouts, asthma, and sinus congestion. Grasso supports women struggling with weight loss by identifying their hidden food sensitivities and healing diges-tive problems to help them lose those stubborn pounds. She now offers food allergy analysis as part of her health coach-ing programs, using both customized cleanses and IgG food sensitivity blood testing. As Grasso notes, “Identifying my hidden food allergies was an essential part of healing myself of acid reflux and IBS. It also cleared up my seasonal allergies and congestion so I no longer need to rely on conventional medicines. As part of my healing process, I went from a size 12 to a size 2.” Preregistration is required by May 14 at PurpleOmYoga.com. Call Christine Grasso at 201-787-4950 or email [email protected] with questions. See ad on page 44.

newsbriefsAstrology Study Group Open to New Members

A unique astrology study group in Livingston is accepting new members to its weekly classes.

The group is led by Eytan Tsioni, a consulting West-ern Astrologer, Level 4 certified by the NCGR (Na-tional Council for Geocosmic Research). Students learn theories of basic and advanced astrological techniques and practice with their own astrologi-cal charts as well as charting guests. Guests can be family, friends, relatives or anyone who is willing to share and give feedback.

During the class, students interpret a guest’s chart, which lists the details of the guest’s personality, life potentials, past events, future challenges, and windows of opportunities as seen in the chart. The guests, for a nominal fee, receive beneficial information that would cost much more were they to get a private reading, while the students gain immediate feedback and validation from the guests. An exchange of ideas and learning from other students in the class provides enrichment and knowledge for all participants. Those who have some knowledge of astrology are encouraged to join the study group. Those who have no knowledge of astrology but are interested in learning the craft while participating in the classes are encouraged to take intro-ductory private classes with Tsioni. For more information, call Eytan Tsioni at 973-985-8845 or email Info@ innercycles.com.

Morris Habitat Restore Moves to Convenient New Location

On Wednesday, May 2, Morris Habitat will relocate its offices and ReStore to 274

South Salem Street, Randolph. After almost five years in the original location, it was time for a bigger

site to match the rapid growth of the ReStore, which sells new and gently used building supplies, furniture,

windows, lighting, paint, and more at discounted prices to the public. This new facility will have 20 percent more warehouse sales

and presentation space, as well as significantly more parking spaces. Starting May 2, drop-off donations will be accepted at the new Randolph loca-tion during regular ReStore hours: 10am to 4pm Wednesday through Sunday, and until 8pm Thursday. Proceeds from the ReStore go toward building safe, decent, affordable hous-ing for local families in need. Since the ReStore opened in May 2007, funds from its proceeds have built six homes in Morris County and surrounding areas. In addition, the ReStore promotes recycling and re-use and has diverted more than 2,000 tons of useable material from ending up in landfills. To learn more, visit MorrisRestore.org or call 973-366-3358.

Detoxify Your Beauty RegimenWomen, on average, apply 15 personal products daily. This can mean ex-

posure to hundreds of chemicals each day. Research indicates that many personal care products contain chemicals linked to a variety of serious diseases including cancer, birth defects and skin problems. Of course, it’s not practical to go into the bathroom and clear out every personal product we own. But we can replace the following common “most toxic” products with safe, natural ones.

Lipstick: Based on studies from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, many top brands of lipstick have been shown to contain lead. Two thirds of the 33 brands studied contained detectable levels of lead. Half of the samples tested con-tained levels of lead above the recommended limit for lead in

candy. Lead is a potent neurotoxin and has been linked to many health problems.

Body Lotion: Filled with synthetic fragrance and preservatives, body lotion is highly toxic. Parabens, used as preservatives in body lotion, have been implicated in increasing breast cancer risk, disrupting normal endocrine (hormone) function, impairing fertility and fetal development. According to a study published in 2004 by the Journal of Toxicology, “….18 out of 20 breast tumors contained significant concentrations of parabens.”

Perfume: Many perfumes, since they’re made up of synthetic fragrance and therefore synthetic chemicals, should also be avoided. The fragrance industry uses more than 3,000 chemical ingredients to create perfumes and fragrances. Phthal-ates, used to disperse a fragrance’s scent, are found in almost all fragrant products. Phthalates are hormone-disrupting chemicals that are theorized to cause damage to the kidneys, liver, lungs, and reproductive organs. Detoxifying your beauty routine by switching to natural, organic beauty products can help to reduce your overall toxic burden. Call Denville Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center, 161 East Main St. , Denville, at 973-627-7888 to learn about other ways to reduce your toxic burden. Visit them at DenvilleMedical.com. eating animal fats to keep cho-lesterol in check, Danish researchers have found that eating hard cheese is better for the arteries than consuming the equivalent number of calories in butter. According to their study, pub-lished in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, when hard cheese accounted for 13 percent of partici-pants’ daily calories, their LDL (bad cholesterol) did not increase. When the same individuals switched to con-suming more butter, their LDL levels rose. The researchers were unsure

what caused the results, but noted that cheese contains a lot of calcium, which can increase the amount

of fat excreted by the digestive tract.

SOUR NEWS ABOUT SWEET DRINKSDrinking sodas and other sugar-

sweetened beverages may increase a woman’s risk of heart disease and dia-betes, according to research presented at the American Heart Association’s Sci-entific Sessions 2011. Middle-aged and older women that drank two or more such drinks per day were nearly four times as likely to develop high triglyc-erides and significantly more likely to develop impaired fasting glucose levels, plus increase their waist size. The study also noted that risk factors for heart dis-ease and stroke developed even when the women didn’t gain weight.

Cancer ReportA Holistic Guide to Recovery and WellnessDr. Lawrence LeShan, considered “the father of mind-body therapy” and author of Cancer as a Turning Point, observes, “Getting cancer can become the beginning of living.” The Cancer Report, a practical, comprehensive guide to recovery, offers hope and heal-ing, based upon facts and inspirational accounts of regained health, from testimony by both cancer patients and medical experts.

Co-authored by John R. Voell and Cynthia A. Chatfield, the user-friendly report explains how thousands are achieving per-manent recoveries from most forms of cancer—even when in its final stages. Cancer Report represents 30 years of inquiry into a century of findings among hundreds of physicians, psychologists, scientists, clinicians and counselors, many of whom continue to successfully guide patients through holistic cancer treatment. Contributors to the report represent experience with more than 70,000 cancer cases, and all point to the primary role a patient plays in his or her own recovery.

One such cancer survivor is Greg Anderson. In 1984 Greg was told he only had a few weeks to live when he made the decision to heal his relationships with everyone in his life, including a former “enemy.” His physical condition began to improve from that day forward. He made a full recovery from his “incurable” late-stage metastatic lung cancer and remains alive and well 27 years later.

Endorsed by leading experts such as medical doctors Christiane Northrup and Bernie Siegel, and Louise Hay, a renowned founder of the self-help movement, Cancer Report includes compelling summaries of case work from doctors and counselors convinced that the key to curing cancer lies in approaches different from conventional, invasive treatments. The book, which in-cludes a 50-page step-by-step Patients’ Personal Recovery Guide, is written in simple terms useful to patients, health profession-als and caregivers. It concludes with a 27-page Comprehensive Support and Resource Directory that covers the varied personal needs of cancer patients.

Hay, author of You Can Heal Your Life, maintains, “The world is finally ready to read and put into practice the remarkable breakthroughs in healing outlined in this report, moving everyone from a [potential] cancer victim to a cancer victor. Even the well can benefit from this information.”

Those of us who are health-conscious have many options available to us. A growing number of traditional medical practitioners are now embracing the benefits of alternative healing as a complement to traditional medicine. In

our own area, we’re fortunate that a major teaching hospital, Morristown Medical Center, offers an integrated approach to the treatment of cancer while an alternative healing arts cooperative in Mendham offers a wealth of holistic healing modalities.

Atlantic Health’s Integrative Medicine “Healing comes in all levels including self-promotion of wellness,” says Jean Marie Rosone, who’s the coordinator of integrative oncology at Morristown Medical Cen-ter’s Carol G. Simon Cancer Center. The Simon Center employs more than 60 healing practitioners who use Reiki, massage, and healing touch therapies to treat patients diagnosed with cancer. “These methods are incredibly empowering; they give people a sense of control,” says Rosone. “Instead of feeling helpless, patients tell me they feel peacefulness and relaxation when they are given a greater sense of control.” Terrance Welsh, M.D. from NJ Pain Consultants, also sees the benefits of complementing traditional and holistic therapies. “In medicine, everything we prescribe we determine by looking at the risks versus the benefits,” says Welsh. “Although there are few controlled studies to document the benefits of these heal-ing modalities, the risks are low, yet the benefits could be substantial.”

Finding Holistic Health at the Room Above “We don’t tell people to throw out their medicine,” says Maureen Mahoney, with the Room Above, a healing cooperative based in Brookside, part of Mendham Township. Instead, the cooperative’s practitioners focus on complementary alterna-tive healing therapies that include healing touch, Reiki, Tibetan healing bowls, shamanic healing, feng shui, life coaching and integrative therapeutic massage. The Room Above’s six partners— Gina Bruno, Kathy Kane, Maureen Mahoney, Ellen Mooney, Susan Novick and Michelle Zanoni—joined forces a year ago to create a sacred space whose mantra is Rejuvenate. Transform. Thrive. Community. Joy. Those terms greet you as you walk up the steps to the Room Above’s studio, beckoning with a promise of what clients can find inside. Mahoney’s areas of focus are healing touch and Tibetan healing bowls, which bring energy fields into healthy vibrations, and open and balance the flow of energy. Her clients range from those who need help coping with stress to those undergoing chemotherapy.

Gina Bruno offers shamanic heal-ing, the ancient tradition of energy medi-cine. As Bruno explains, “An energy field surrounds the body and holds within it a record of emotional, physical and spiri-tual history. When imprints are (cleared) the history (can be rewritten/rewired), leading to transformational changes.” Bruno believes that we all have the in-nate ability to tap into our inner resourc-es, but not all of us realize it. The benefits Bruno sees in her clients from her ses-sions with them include better focus, an optimistic outlook, increased energy, and the ability to be in touch with a part of themselves that they may have forgotten about—or never knew existed. Ellen Mooney focuses on Reiki and intuitive healing therapy at the Room Above. Mooney begins her sessions by making clients feel comfortable and re-laxed—providing them with a safe space. “I do an energetic scan of their body and connect with their heart. Throughout my session I have feelings of empathy and compassion.” Through her work, she is able to remove blockages and create bal-ance through the meridians. As Mooney relates, “I help people help themselves. They are able to let go of what is no longer needed . . . to be the truth of who they are and to receive what they need. My clients feel peaceful and have the ability to focus and are more empowered to enhance their health.” Michelle Zanoni, a feng shui consultant, believes that in addition to healing ourselves, it’s important make our living spaces as healthy and balanced as possible. “Both have a pro-found effect on each other. One is not separate from the other,” says Zanoni. “Feng shui quite literally addresses our living spaces and helps restore, reset, and reorganize them, supporting who we are and where we want to go next.” Zanoni’s clients usually feel a sense of relief and excitement after a consulta-tion because there is a new energetic beginning, a clean slate to move for-ward effortlessly. “Change is not always easy; feng shui gives my clients permis-

sion to change. I am there to support and guide them physi-cally, emotionally and spiritually.” Susan Novick specializes in integrative therapeutic massage. “I use my intuitive empathic nature to guide me through the process,” says Novick, who has felt its benefits firsthand: Immediately after getting her first therapeutic massage, she decided that she wanted to learn it to help others. “I get positive feedback from my clients. Just a little shift in how one sits at a desk or how one bends and lifts can make a plethora of difference in their quality of life.” Novick also feels that proper nutrition, exercise and stress reduction go a long way toward ensuring a healthful life. She suggests starting with massage to feel the benefits rather quickly: “From there, slowly start incorporating small changes. Gradu-ally you’ll branch out to other areas that nourish the body, mind and soul.” Kathy Kane provides life coaching at the Room Above, with a special focus on unearthing each client’s creative spirit “through accessing creativity as an attitude.” She helps cli-ents realize their creative abilities by having them give them-selves permission to create things that are “less than perfect.” As an example, in her writing workshops, she encourages participants to write from the gut—and just see what comes out. In a recent program she led for Dress for Success, a non-profit organization, she helped clients tap into their “Audac-ity” muse—getting them to a place within themselves where they felt emboldened, finding both courage and focus. The Room Above also provides a professional venue for Leigh LaMura and Colleen McSpirit to welcome clients. LaMura uses the Tuning Fork technique, based on ancient healing frequencies, to help her clients gain clearer focus of their life’s path and direction. “It is as if the negative energy & debris is cleared away, making room for new possibilities,” says LaMura. McSpirit offers crystal bowl meditation, which helps balance emotions, enhance relaxation and boost the immune system along with creating healing where needed. Crystal bowl meditations are a gentle way to relieve stress: The calming tones and vibrations of the bowl help to balance chakras, creating a better flow of energy in the body. With the services offered by Morristown Medical Center and those available through the Room Above, we can call upon a host of traditional and holistic healers right in our own backyard. A journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet —Lao-tzu, Tao Te Ching

Since ancient times, humans have needed to tap into their creative spirit when faced with the challenges of life, whether finding ways to find and grow food, inventing the wheel or developing cures to disease. All were incredible chal-

lenges met with intense desires that eventually became the sparks and catalysts for initiating great change. At some point in time, while navigating our own personal dilemmas and chal-lenges, we recognize that our extreme emotional or physical discomfort requires us to make some sort of move in one direction or another. The term crossroads describes perfectly where we are mentally at such times. It may also be thought of as the moment when, after much deliberation, we take a “leap of faith.” Before we reach that place, however, we may find ourselves stuck or stalled, so unsure of which path to take that we pull back and do nothing at all. It often feels safer not to act, which keeps us in our comfort zone, tied to the familiar. Though comfortable and familiar, the status quo nevertheless carries with it an underlying gnawing feeling, an inner struggle and discontent that compels us to make a change. To stay in the familiar is no longer an option if we are to grow. True change is borne of the deep desire for something better, something more. Admittedly, there are times in life when you must pull back. If your emotions are running high or you are reacting impulsively instead of acting with conscious awareness, having the wisdom to pull back and regroup can be a critical and much needed component to a successful major life change. Successful change comes when we reach a level of awareness about our deci-sions and don’t act out of fear, anger or impulsiveness. We acknowledge our fears and anxieties but act with purpose, knowing intuitively we will come through this

time in our lives with new strengths, experiences and successes. There are four key components to successful change; by acknowledging them, we can become who we truly want to be.

The Crossroads This is the point in the journey where the level of tension or pain compels us to

make a change. It can be wrought with anxiety, confusion, fear and uncertainty. We are standing at the edge. I like to think of this as a “jumping-off place.” We may seek outside support to help us clarify our decision to change, or we may turn deeply inward and use this time as a period of intense self-reflection.

First Steps We make a move in one direction, but as we start to move down the path, we realize

there are a zillion forks in the road! Yikes! Our anxiety comes from feeling overwhelmed as we realize there are so many options along the road. We may panic and think about pulling back now, but it’s too late. We intuitively know we can’t go back because we realize that although we feel unsure of ourselves, we may miss something wonderful out there.

Discovery and Exploration This is a time when we may find ourselves exploring many paths

simultaneously, trying to discern which of them have meaning for us and which are just temporary diversions from what we truly value. It can be an altogether scary and exhilarating time as we ex-plore new experiences and gain more knowledge and insight, surrounding ourselves with opportunity and potentiality.

Integration of Old and New This is when it all starts to come to-gether: We have redefined ourselves

and understand how to integrate our new and past experiences into who we are right now. We are still ourselves but richer, fuller, wiser. We can look back on our journey and have an awareness of the interconnectedness of all our ex-periences, past and present, good and not so good. We also understand that

this is just one of many journeys we will take, and trust that we can weather each with more wisdom and grace than the one before. Consider the nature of the transi-tion process itself: How does it relate to your personal journey? What challenges are you navigating in your life? What knowledge have you gleaned from your experiences? Understanding these four components to successful change will help you gain deeper clarity and insight about how to best move forward. Making decisions consciously and with great awareness is key. Don’t rush the process. Although we like to think the journey will be quick and painless, more often than not it isn’t. It’s hard work. If you are anything like me, having patience and being able to surrender to the aspects of the journey that are out of our control isn’t always easy. We may try to force things to happen. Flow while you go. Consider adopting the “take the time it takes so it takes less time” mantra that a wise horse whis-perer shared with me many years ago. It will help you navigate life transitions and reach your goals and desires more smoothly, with a sense of grace and peace, while maintaining the integrity of the relationships with those around you. Finally, trust that you are exactly where you need to be along the journey right now. Anti-Aging SkincareTurn Back the Clock with New Treatments and Breakthroughs

by Linda Sechrist

Today’s anti-aging toolbox is filled with promise. Tools range from at-home strengthening and refin-

ing creams to commercial treatment technologies such as cold laser, intense pulsed light (IPL), light-emitting diode (LED), microdermabrasion, photofacials, and skin tightening and rejuvenating ultrasound. Acupuncture facelifts make use of ancient Chinese techniques. Then there are the more invasive injectables, fillers and chemical peels. How do we know what is best for us? Whatever one’s chosen tools, Hema Sundaram, author of Face Value: The Truth about Beauty—and a Guilt-Free Guide to Finding It, believes that women at any age have every right to pursue the outward expression of their inner beauty. The Washington, D.C.-based medical doctor and board-certi-

fied dermatologist, who specializes in cosmetic surgery, supports a woman’s freedom to choose, without embarrass-ment or criticism. She emphasizes the positive effects of cosmetic procedures performed for the right reasons and notes, “Restoring the balance between a woman’s inner and outer selves can transform her life.” An at-home anti-aging regimen aimed at retarding time’s telltales and enhancing beauty lays the foundation for an effective partnership with an estheti-cian or dermatologist. Performed consis-tently, do-it-yourself treatments can help to maintain cosmetic work performed by skincare professionals. Popular, non-invasive techniques are explained here. Many take it a step further with a meditation practice designed to develop and project inner, spiritual beauty.

With aging still a largely mysterious process, current seekers of perpetual youth and beauty are urging scientists to find ways to slow or even reverse it. New tools to fight lines, wrinkles and sagging skin excite the imagination.

Gua Sha. This Chinese technique (pronounced GWA SHA) uses a small medicinal board to gently massage, manipulate and stimulate energy points along the face. The objective is to promote a normal flow of energy, or qi (pronounced KEE), and blood circula-tion and to remove toxins. It also sup-ports, lymph drainage. Gua sha activates inner vitality by stimulating both the superficial and deep muscles that control facial expres-sion. Beauty benefits include a brighter complexion and a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, dark under-eye circles and puffy eyes. It also lifts sag-ging at the neck and jaw. Hypnox. This 25-minute guided hypnotherapeutic audio recording is touted as a natural alternative to the neurotoxin Botox. Instead of paralyzing targeted facial muscles, which inhib-its natural facial expression, Hypnox targets and retrains the same muscles to stop habitual frowning, lip pucker-ing and squinting. The process is said to promote overall relaxation, allowing wrinkles to fade away. Facercize. Muscle resistance training helps tone and enliven the 30 muscles of the face to render more youthful-looking features. Muscle fibers literally smooth out, shorten and lift the attached skin on the face and neck. Enzyme Mask. A weekly exfoliating fruit enzyme mask gently dissolves dead surface cells and embedded impurities, while restoring hydration. Adding an organic, fruit-based peel of alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids supplies an ideal boost that can result in an even brighter complexion and firmer looking skin.

Retinols. These naturally occurring forms of vitamin A are a gentler, over-the-counter version of retinoids. They likewise promote healthy cell renewal and collagen production. Gentle Microdermabrasion. At-home microdermabrasion kits work to reduce the visibility of pores and fine lines. Many come with battery-operated brushes, aluminum-free scrubs, balanc-ing toners and moisturizing serums; look for natural ingredients. Microcurrent Facial Sculpting. “Electrical stimulation forces facial muscles to do sit-ups,” says Charlene Handel, owner of Skin Fitness, Etc., in Carlsbad, California. Twenty years of experience with handheld commercial products have convinced this certified holistic esthetician that if the current can’t be felt, it isn’t doing the job. Trained by Elina Fedotova, CEO of Elina Organics and founder of the As-sociation of Holistic Skin Care Practitio-ners, Handel cautions that techniques intended to move skincare products be-yond the outermost dermal layer—such as microcurrent, cold laser, ultrasound and LED—should be 100 percent natural and organic. “Read labels to find the USDA Organic seal and avoid subjecting skin to synthetic chemicals and ingredients that contain petroleum derivatives from crude oil; artificial fra-grances, which frequently contain toxic chemicals; and synthetic preservatives such as parabens,” she advises. The ultimate responsibility for sk-incare is our own. When a healthy diet, sufficient sleep, exfoliation, hydration and natural topical treatments are no longer keeping gravity at bay, individu-als of either gender need not hesitate to seek help from skin-care professionals.

May is here—National Bike Month—heralded by a new Outdoor Industry Association

study, which reports that bicycling is adult Americans’ second-favorite out-door activity, after running. Its popular-ity is not surprising: Biking provides energizing aerobic and cardio exercise, flexibility, freedom, access and simply makes anyone feel young and vital. “Everyone remembers their first bike and learning to ride it,” says Micah Rice, managing director of national events with USA Cycling, in Colorado Springs. “Parents can tap into that inter-est and the entire family can participate in a ride around the block, along a bike path, on an adventurous bike trail or in a local group fun ride. Cycling is easier than running, because it is less hard on your body and you can ride at any pace or distance.” Sometimes we ride to combine shopping with exercise on local streets; on other occasions, we eagerly traverse

old rail lines or ride hillside moguls. Having the right bicycle delivers the most from any experience.

Choosing WheelsKnowing your style and primary planned uses are paramount. Leading manufac-turers, including Cannondale, Electra, GT, Marin, Novara, Raleigh, Scott and Trek offer many models for men, women and youngsters. Categories range from urban, road or mountain to recreation, comfort or cruising. Bikes designed for road and pavement are generally lighter and have more gears than mountain bikes, which are built with more shock-absorbing features, such as rugged suspension and rough terrain tires, plus more lower gears to help ascend inclines. Urban and commuting bikes feature a slightly more upright riding position that helps bikers and motorists to see each other better.

Steve Colmar, a sales specialist at REI’s Seattle, Washington, store, pro-vides two key guidelines for choosing and using a bike. Regarding seat posi-tion, “Make sure your leg has a slight bend when your pedal is at its lowest point in its rotation. If the legs feel a little cramped, raise the seat.” Regarding handlebar position, “Many serious road bikers adjust handlebars to be a little farther away, so they can lean forward with more weight in their hands, while many casual riders prefer a more upright position, because that’s what they are accustomed to while sitting. Whatever you are most comfortable with works.” He notes that REI (rei.com) master bike technicians nationwide provide advice on selecting a bike, as well as free public bike maintenance classes.

Cargo CarriersSome riders feel that shouldering a knapsack is uncomfortable, inadequate or hinders pedaling. Bikes can be equipped with cargo-carrying capabili-ties to increase usability. Whatever the length of trip, having the gear to bring along key supplies will yield more util-ity and enjoyment: Think water, food, spare tire, cell phone, etc. What about bringing home some fresh produce from the farmers’ market? For around-town use, go with a bike trailer for frequent large loads; smaller amounts can fit into one or two front and/or back bike bags. Local bike shops can advise.

Riding ResourcesUSA Cycling, the sport’s national governing body, is hosting 17 national competitions with expos around the country this year in mountain, road and track categories for juniors, collegiate, open and senior divisions, plus many other local events. Visit USACycling.org to search for nearby riding clubs and and year-round events. Since 1986, the nonprofit Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RailsToTrails.org) has been using former rail lines and connecting corridors to expand bicycling opportunities. Parenting has more than its share of stressful challenges, and today’s moms are often frustrated by con-

flicting advice. As families search for an-swers to daily issues, a more holistic and natural approach, known as conscious parenting, has been gaining momentum. According to Lori Petro, founder of TEACH through Love, a child advocacy group and educational resource for progressive parents, conscious parent-ing comprises the spirit of cooperation, instead of traditional models of discipline and control. “We want to teach our chil-dren how to live in the world, explore, be creative, compassionate, learn appropriate expressions of emotion and think for themselves,” she says. To help maximize the rewards for all, Natural Awaken-ings asked several forward-think-ing moms for their best tips on how to handle some of parent-ing’s biggest challenges.

Surviving the First YearAs a certified Happiest Baby educator, mother of three and owner of Gummy Giggles Baby Boutique, in Yukon, Oklahoma, Lori Simmons provides parents with essential tools and knowledge to help calm unhappy babies. She notes that while dealing with a crying infant is simply part of being a parent, colic is a

condition moms dread the most. Making the baby feel as if he or she is still in the womb is key, she advises. “People try to not make any noise, but the reality is, babies often cry because it’s too silent.” She recommends swad-dling the baby, swaying and shushing quietly in the baby’s ear—all to mimic the comforts of the womb.

The best advice that she gives any new parent is that it’s okay not to know everything. “Just listen to your instincts and understand that each child will learn and grow at his or her own pace,” she says. “Most importantly, relax and don’t sweat the small stuff.”

Weathering Toddler MeltdownsPetro says we can better meet the chal-lenges of these years—including temper tantrums, biting, toilet training and sleep problems—if we understand these situations in the context of a child’s development. During early growth, ex-ploration and change, children typically have trouble expressing their thoughts and feelings, and that can prove over-whelming for everyone. So, what can adults do in the middle of a toddler meltdown? First, remember that it’s the rare parent that hasn’t had to deal with a tired, cranky, screaming toddler. Simmons admits to having handled her share of tantrums. “They don’t understand their own frustration, so it’s difficult for parents to understand the reason for outbursts,” she observes. Her strategy is to take the stressed child out of the situation. It helps to know that some hitting and biting is considered normal for tod-dlers, especially if they see it as an effec-tive way to get what they want. Parents can put an end to it much the same way they deal with other inappropriate behav-ior, advises Petro. She suggests remain-ing calm, finding the root cause of the situation and acknowledging the child’s feelings and needs. Understanding why the child is doing it is crucial to making it stop. “Conscious parenting operates from the premise that all behavior is commu-nication to meet a need,” she says.

Addressing AdolescenceAccording to Certified Life Coach Clare Seffrin Bond, although the adolescent years can be difficult, there’s plenty that parents can do to nurture teens and encourage responsible behavior. “The best parenting advice I ever received was from my mom, who encouraged me to grow into parenthood—taking it

wisewords

The common wisdom goes like this: that

the myth of “some enchanted evening,” when all is awash with the thrill of connec-tion and the aliveness of new romance, is actually a delusion… a hormonally manu-factured lie. That soon enough, reality will set in and lovers will awaken from their mutual projections, discover the psycho-logical work involved in two people trying to reach across the chasm of real-life sep-arateness, and come to terms at last with the mundane sorrows of human existence and intimate love. In this case, the common wisdom is a lie. From a spiritual perspective, the scenario above is upside down. From a spiritual perspective, the original high of a romantic connection is thrilling because it is true. It is in fact the oppo-site of delusion. For in a quick moment, a gift from the gods, we are likely to suspend our judgment of the other, not because we are temporarily insane, but because we are temporarily sane. We are having what you might call a mini-enlightenment experience. Enlighten-ment is not unreal; enlightenment—or pure love—is all that is real. Enlighten-ment is when we see not as through a glass darkly, but truly face-to-face. What is unreal is what comes after the initial high, when the personal-ity self reasserts itself and the wounds and triggers of our human ego form a veil across the face of love. The initial

romantic high is not something to outgrow, so much as something to earn admittance back into—this time not as an unearned gift of Cupid’s arrows, but as a consequence of the real work of the psychological and spiritual journey. The romantic relationship is a spiritual assign-ment, presenting an opportunity for lovers and would-be lovers to burn through our own issues and forgive the other theirs, so togeth-

er we can gain re-entrance to the joyful realms of our initial contact that turn out to have been real love after all. Our problem is that most of us rarely have a psychic container strong enough to stand the amount of light that pours into us when we have truly seen, if even for a moment, the deep beauty of another. The problem we have is not that in our roman-tic fervor we fall into a delusion of one-ness; the problem is that we then fall into the delusion of separateness. And those are the romantic mysteries: the almost blinding light when we truly see each other, the desperate darkness of the ego’s blindness, and the sacred work of choos-ing the light of mutual innocence when the darkness of anger and guilt descend.

Marianne Williamson is an internation-ally noted speaker, author of 10 books, Unity Church minister and a teacher and student of A Course in Miracles. Her most recent workshops focus on the topic of Enchanted Love: Building the Inner Temple of the Sacred and the Romantic.

day by day, without the expectation that I would be proficient simply through the act of giving birth,” says this mother of two, in Richmond, Indiana. Rewarding relationships come through accepting the notion that children are individuals living their own journey, rather than extensions of their parents. “What parents see or feel in a situation is not necessarily what the child is experiencing,” Bond explains. “Taking the time to recognize the fact of individual realities can be huge in re-thinking one’s approach to discipline.” She recommends speaking to adolescents honestly—even when it’s painful—and listening to them, even when we may not want to hear, or believe, what they’re saying. “Stay in touch with the fact that your relation-ship with your children is absolutely huge in terms of their—and your— development as a happy and fulfilled person,” counsels Bond. “Work hard at remembering your own teen years, including the frustrations and disap-pointments. Empathy and respect are essential ingredients in successful human relationships at every age.”

Imagine a diet that eliminates the need for calorie counting and never prompts a late-night rum-

mage in search of foods possibly high in fat, sugar or processed ingredients; one that allows you to eat like you do now, except for one small change—the addition of a green drink or smoothie. A green drink isn’t a meal replace-ment; it’s a supplement (a starter or side dish) to the diet you already enjoy. Simply drink one prior to breakfast and if you are committed to optimal health, another before lunch and dinner. You can change the ingredients at will, according to taste. Fruits and vegetables are the most nutrient-rich foods on the planet, accepted as staples in just about every healthy diet imaginable. From vegetarian to omnivore to Weight Watchers diets, the green drink is welcome. After a week or so of drinking green, your body will begin to crave the rush of nutrients it receives and less healthy foods will simply lose their ap-peal. You will naturally gravitate towards foods that fuel your body, instead of foods that drag it down. Robert Young, Ph.D., author of The pH Miracle, has been in the forefront of promoting the fact that the body thrives when its pH levels are more alkaline than acidic. Disease-causing bacteria and viruses, as well as other abnormali-ties, flourish in an acid state, while the body’s natural defense mechanisms work best in an alkaline state. He

writes, “Our glands and organs function properly in exact pro-portion to the amount of alkaline and acid levels in our system; eating a balance of 75 percent alkaline foods

and 25 percent acidic foods is ideal.” Young reports that keeping your body in an alkaline state amplifies benefits such as immune system function, strength, stamina and weight loss. Fruits and veg-etables, especially green leafy vegetables, are extremely alkaline, and drinking them is an easy way to consume more. According to the Institute of Medicine’s Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy, Carbohydrates, Fiber, Fat, Fatty Acids, Cholesterol, Protein and Amino Acids, the average adult needs about 50 grams of protein a day. Eating normal meals generally supplies that. Greens, despite the common misconception, also contain a good amount of protein when eaten in large quantities, which green drinks provide. Getting started requires only a blender or juicer, depending on the recipe. Juicing is great for a quick jolt of concentrated energy; the drink deliv-ers maximum nutrient intake, and the absence of fiber enables near-immediate absorption of vitamins and minerals. Juicing is also preferred by people with digestive issues or those looking to cleanse or heal their system.

consciouseating While blending a green smoothie reduces nutrient concentration through oxidation, by whipping air into the drink, it is ideal for people that need to keep their sugar in check. It’s the flip side of juicing, which can turn a five-pound bag of fruits and greens into a glass of concentrated fruit sugars, called fructose. Blending also delivers fiber, which helps keep the digestive tract in tip-top shape. It can even serve as a complete meal; you can add avocado or raw almond butter for healthy fats, and protein powder, raw chocolate and bee pollen for extra stamina and endur-ance—much more than what is possible using a juicer. In most cases, a typical blender will suffice. However, when blending fruits and vegetables with a harder consisten-cy, such as carrots, pineapple hearts and apples, or waxy greens like kale, you will need more specialized equipment. Two professional blenders, Blendtec and Vitamix, are a good fit for home counter-tops. Spinach, chard and mixed greens make a perfect base for beginners. Just blend or juice them with a few sweet fruits and berries like banana, blueber-ries and apple to disguise the green taste. From there, you can experiment by adding more potent ingredients like kale, beet greens, mustard greens, arugula and watercress. Mint or other herbs add a refreshing twist. It helps newcomers to start with more fruits than greens, and then gradually shift the balance. For even more smoothie nutrition, try adding superfoods, such as puréed pumpkin, coconut milk or oil, nut and seed butters, avocado and even garlic. To assuage a sweet tooth, add a dash of honey or pitted dates to the blender. You don’t have to live like a strict dieter, athlete or nutritionist to be healthier and feel better. Just toss a few fruits and greens into a blender or juicer each day and drink to your health.

Cool SlawThis refreshing summer delight is perfect for parties by the pool, barbecues and picnics in the park. Broccoli’s cancer-fighting properties com-bat carcinogens introduced to meat by a smoky grill. Ginger works to settle stomachs and has long been a remedy for heartburn.

1 crown of broccoli ½ small red cabbage 2 carrots 1 lemon (peeled) 1 green apple Ginger to taste

Peel ginger root and juice all ingredients together. Serve over ice.

StrawMint JulepThink of this drink as summertime in a glass. Though the name traditionally has a less-than-healthy connotation, this vitamin-rich twist on the theme will leave partakers refreshed and energized. Celery and mint make for a smooth and clean taste, while delivering essential nutrients and properties known to help lower blood pressure. Bottoms up!

1 stalk celery 1 handful mint leaves 2–3 handfuls spinach 1 apple

Combine ingredients and juice.

Berry PatchThis sweet treat is an easy way to introduce dark greens like collards into your diet. Collards have a strong, distinct flavor when cooked, but when blended raw among earthy-sweet and tropical flavors like kiwi and strawberry, they can add a spicy zing to a fruit smoothie. Mangoes enhance the health benefits with enzymes that aid digestion, glutamine for memory power, and heart-healthy antioxidants.

3 strawberries 1 mango 1 kiwi 3 large basil leaves 2 large collard leaves (remove stems) Water

Fill blender with as much water as desired. Add collard greens and basil. Blend until smooth, and then add fruit. Pulse-blend to a desired consistency.

Great Green Drinksby Jason Manheim

GuavacadoGuavas can be hard to come by and vary in size, shape and texture. Sort the seeds before dropping the ingredients into the blender, as some may be too hard to break up and should go into the composter. Also, some guava skin can be thick and bitter; test a bit of its zest before blending.

1 cup guava 1 avocado 1 cup mango 1 lemon (juice) Water

Add all ingredients. Blend until smooth, adding water as needed.

Tropical SunBefore the new day starts, treat yourself to a flavorful getaway filled with rich vitamins. Bok choy, categorized as a negative calorie food, because it helps burn calories, nicely complements tropical elements. Garnish with a tiny umbrella and feel the sea breeze.

2 bulbs bok choy 1 orange (peeled) 1 cup coconut water 1 cup pineapple 1 banana

Combine the first three ingredients and blend until smooth. Add the other fruits. Pulse-blend to a desired consistency.

Greens LoverThe good-for-you factor in salads is of-

ten diminished by introducing salad oils and dressings, sacrificing some health benefits for taste, but not so with this drink. The fiber-rich kale and the veritable powerhouse of vi-tamins in spinach pair with sweet carrots and a tart

green apple, juiced to a harmonious balance of taste and nutrition.

3 leaves kale 1 bunch cilantro 1 cup spinach 1 cucumber 1–2 carrots 1 green apple

Combine ingredients and juice.

Green CleanThis tasty concoction begs to be poured into an ice-filled punch bowl and ladled into frosty glasses. You’ll never know your body is detoxifying as you gulp this tasty summer treat. For those that find it a bit too sour, add an apple or two. Green Clean not only has high amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, it is one of the most aromatically appeal-ing drinks around—crisp, clean and refreshing.

1 lime 1 lemon 1 large cucumber 1 handful basil 1 handful mint 2 handfuls spinach Ginger to taste

Hormones rule our lives; it’s a simple fact of biochemistry. In their role as the body’s chemi-

cal messengers, hormones affect every human biological system. Without them, nothing works correctly. Women’s hormonal systems are as com-plex as men’s, although vastly different. They govern reproduction, plus every aspect of health—including metabolizing food, proper immune function, physical and emotional responses to stress and the aging of cells.

Teens and Early 20sPuberty and the early reproductive years should be the physical peak of a young woman’s life; when she is physically active and full of energy and youthful health. It’s also the time when breasts develop, hips widen, pubic hair appears, menstruation begins, and she becomes capable of pregnancy. The good news is that several studies by the National Cancer Institute and the University of California, Los Angeles, have shown that regular exercise under-taken at this age results in lower estrogen levels throughout a woman’s life, greatly reducing her risk of breast cancer and other hormonal cancers. Yet, C.W. Ran-dolph, Jr., a leading bioidentical hormone physician and co-author of From Hor-mone Hell to Hormone Well, reports that

the ideal hormonal balance is routinely upset today. Culprits are obesity among young American women and the every-day presence of toxic estrogenic chemi-cals in today’s dairy products and meat, personal care products, plastics, food containers, pesticides and herbicides, as well as car exhaust. “These compounds often have chemi-cal structure similar to estrogen and can act like estrogen when introduced into the body,” Randolph explains. “Over time, these substances can increase estrogen in the body, potentially causing problems.” Categorized as xenoestrogens, these hormone disruptors can cause rapid growth in breast tissue and have been blamed for the appearance of breast tis-sue and even milk production in girls as young as 18 months and the early onset of puberty, particularly among African-American girls. They are also suspected in the rising incidence of breast cancer in younger women today.

Reproductive YearsWomen in their reproductive years often experience extreme stress in strug-gling to balance family, work, relation-ships and a need for personal growth, along with economic challenges. Women’s health expert Dr. Christiane Northrup, author of The Wisdom of

The Hormone Balancing ActNatural Strategies for Feeling Betterby Kathleen Barnes

Ways to Avoid Manmade Estrogensd Choose organic milk and dairy products.

d Eat organic meats and wild-caught fish.

d Avoid canned foods and plastic water and soda bottles.

d Do not use lawn or garden chemical pesticides or herbicides.

d Shed outdoor shoes before entering the house.

d Avoid furniture made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and synthetic carpeting; these materials outgas toxic chemicals.

d Use natural household-cleaning products, including baking soda and vinegar.

d Choose natural personal care products, including shampoos, lotions and cosmetics.

pounds in the belly area, and belly fat pro-duces more estrogen. It’s a vicious cycle.” Lucille considers perimenopause the opposite of puberty and counsels, “While we are dealing with these changes, bring-ing some hormones on board for a short time can be a valuable tool.” However, she cautions, replacing anything isn’t the issue. “You have to look at the big picture,” she avers. “Putting hormones into a toxic body is like putting gas into a dirty gas tank. We have to restore function first.” Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) has been a boon for mil-lions. Results of the Women’s Health Initia-tive, a national study of women’s health be-tween 1991 and 2002, involving more than 160,000 postmenopausal women ages 50 to 79, sparked more widespread use early in the 21st century, when research began to show the dire consequences of synthetic hormone replacement. Northrup calls bioidenticals “nature’s ideal design,” due to the prescription of individually tailored doses, custom-made by compounding pharmacies. Although these are rarely covered by insurance, estradiol-only patches may be; however, additional progesterone and testosterone may still be necessary, depending on test results, according to Northrup.

and the end of childbearing years, typical-ly show up between the early and late 30s. These range from hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia to weight gain, fuzzy thinking and redistribution of hair on the body. Again, the presence of xen-oestrogens and stress contribute. Women of other cultures rarely ex-perience the intensity of perimenopausal symptoms that Western women report. So does that make perimenopause a lifestyle disease, as well? Emphatically yes, says Holly Lucille, a doctor of naturopathy, registered nurse and past president of the California Naturo-pathic Doctors Association. “Diet and life-style are absolutely essential to a healthy hormonal system,” which she explains in her book, Creating and Maintaining Bal-ance: A Woman’s Guide to Safe, Natural, Hormone Health. “The biochemistry of the body is based on vitamins and minerals. If we compromise food and lifestyle choices, we are not getting the nutrients necessary to have a healthy endocrine system.” Weight gain is a particular concern during perimenopause. In their book, From Belly Fat to Belly Flat, Dr. Randolph and Genie James, co-founders of the Natural Hormone Institute, advocate a specific eating plan to override belly fat and related accu-mulating effects of excess estrogen. “In perimenopause, progesterone production usually declines rapidly, more than 120 times faster than estrogen or testosterone production. That’s what aggravates the symptoms,” Randolph notes. “Because women in perimenopause are usually still menstruating, they think their hor-mones are okay.” “The more body fat you have, the more estrogen tips the hormonal imbal-ance,” says Lucille. “Those fat cells hold on to toxins and place more burden on the liver, making it unable to effectively metabolize those extra estrogens,” which are stored in body fat and brought into the body as xenoestrogens. “At the end of the day, estrogen is a messenger, and its message is to tell cells to grow and prolif-erate. That’s what we don’t want.” When estrogen becomes dominant, several things happen, including a more rapid release of insulin from the pancreas, which triggers sugar cravings. “It’s not a willpower problem,” Randolph assures. “Too much estrogen causes you to pack on the

Menopause, blames the stress of modern lifestyles for hormone disruptions in women in their childbearing years. “The stress hormones cortisol and epinephrine can have long-term effects on all other hormones,” advises Northrup. Concurrently, many women sacri-fice self-nurturance in order to nurture others. The first result is often premen-strual syndrome (PMS), which Northrup calls a “lifestyle disease.” “We know that this problem seems to worsen with each subsequent child. That made the connec-tion for me,” she adds, “that with growing families and responsibilities, women no longer take care of themselves as well; no longer get the amount of exercise they once did. The body is quite forgiving in their 20s, much less so in their 30s.” Part of the result is the attempt to reduce stress levels by eating high-fat and high-sugar comfort foods. Weight gain, blood sugar imbalances and sex hormone imbalances follow. “Excess blood sugar changes the way estrogen, progester-one and testosterone are metabolized,” Northrup explains. “PMS and other problems of the reproductive years often go away when you get your blood sugar balanced, but—here’s the rub—you won’t get it rebalanced unless you are address-ing the very real stressors in your life.” Due to the presence of xenoestrogens and Americans’ general fondness for pro-cessed comfort foods, women in their child-bearing years are also increasingly afflicted by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition characterized by overproduction of testosterone and other male hormones. Insulite Laboratories, in Louisville, Colorado, reports that infertility and early onset Type 2 diabetes, another hormonal imbalance problem, are closely connected to PCOS. The first priority for every woman at any age, counsels Northrup, is to get blood sugar (glucose) under control. “Get a glucometer. You don’t need a pre-scription. If your blood sugar level isn’t between 80 and 90 in the morning, you need to look at your diet and lifestyle. Getting this under control will create hormonal balance in the vast majority of women. It’s so simple.”

PerimenopauseThe next hormonal shift overlaps with a woman’s reproductive years. Symptoms of perimenopause, or the start of menopause

MenopauseIf a woman has had no menstrual periods for 12 months, she is considered to be in menopause. However, Lucille asserts, “Menopause is not a disease.” Northrup touts menopause as the most creative and precious time of a woman’s life; it is often a time of spiritual awakening. “When the female brain passes menopause, the brain changes,” advises

Northrup. “In a sense, we move from alternating current to direct current; I believe that this is the way the brain encodes wisdom.” “Yet there are women in their 60s that are still having hot flashes. What should they do?” queries Northrup. Natural alternatives exist that are safe and effective. “Many herbs have been used for millennia that have estrogen-like properties, but do not have estro-

NEVER BE WITHOUT TEETH, INCLUDING IMPLANTSPatients travel from around the country to Denville, in search of the perfect smile.

Denville is famous for its medical community. So, it’s no surprise that a perfect smile is a must have item in this friendly town. Hand crafting those smiles is the life work of Dr. Steiner and Dr. Fine. Our offi ce’s reputation has spread so far that we now treat patients from around the world; often doing more smile makeovers in a single month that some dentists do in a lifetime.

We also offer an amazing alternative for those living with missing teeth. This dramatic advancement in the fi eld of dental implantology now makes it possible for many patients to switch from dentures to permanent implant supported teeth in only a few hours. This new approach can be used to replace a single missing tooth or an entire mouth. Patients leave the offi ce after just one appointment with a beautiful and strong smile. Discomfort is so minimal that most patients eat a light meal that evening.

Upon entering our front door you will immediately know that this is no ordinary dental offi ce, because that’s what most people say upon seeing it for the fi rst time. Among our practice’s notable patients are actresses, actors, astronauts, models and TV personalities. However most of the doctor’s patients are everyday people who just want to look their best.

Drs. Steiner, Fine and Kwiatkowski have focused their practice on those areas about which they are highly passionate. (After all you wouldn’t ask your family doctor to do heart surgery.) Those areas are Cosmetic Dentistry. Trained at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for advanced dental studies, they have devoted over fi fty combined years to perfecting their skills and have placed over 23,000 cosmetic restorations. Our main focus is on cosmetic and full mouth reconstruction cases. This includes Implant Dentistry and Neuromuscular Orthodontics, which can avoid unecessary removal of teeth. Many people do not realize that dental problems may be the cause of headaches, shoulder, back and neck pain, noisy jaw joints and pains in the TMJ.

Drs. Steiner, Fine and Kwiatkowski pride themselves in having Morris County’s premier head, neck and jaw pain relief center. Our offi ce also offers a “limited warranty” that provides free repair or replacement of restorative dental work, when a patient’s regular hygiene visits are maintained. This kind of security could only be offered by truly World Class Dentists. This is why our motto is: “Experienced professionals make the difference.”
