wearelivinginanditisnosurprisethatstressrelatedhealthproblemsareincreasing.Themostcommonsymptomsofstressareheadaches,fatigue,muscletension,lossofsleep,irritabil-ityanddigestivetrouble.Chronicstressisalsoamajorcauseofweight gain. Many studies continue to showus thatwearegrowingaroundthewaistlineinAmerica.Managingyourstresslevelsandultimatelythechemicalsyourbodyproducesinresponsetostresscanhelpyouloseweightandgainhealth. Chronicstress,whetherphysicaloremotional,causesthereleaseofmanydifferentchemicals inyourbodywhichareprimarilysecretedbytheadrenalglands.Theseglandsarethestresshandling glands.Theyproducea varietyof hormonesandneurotransmitterstohelpushandlethestressinourlives.Adrenalglandscanbecomefatiguedinresponsetolongtermstress; this thencauseschemical imbalances that contributedirectlytoweightgainandincreasecravingsforfoodsthatarehighinsugar,saltandfat.

Cortisol and EpinephrineCortisollevels,whichdirectlyaffectmetabolism,areresponsibleformaintaininghealthybloodsugarlevelsbetweenmealsandhelpingtobreakdownfatwhenweexercise.Whenwedon’thavehealthylevelsofcortisol,westorefatinsteadofbreakingitdown.Thisfatwillendupprimarilyinthebelly.Epinephrine,anotherstresschemical,isalsorequiredinbreakingdownfat.Itisverydifficulttoloseweightwithouthealthyamountsofbothofthesechemicals,whicharethefirstlineofdefenseforourbodiesinstressfulsituations.Cortisolandepinephrinetendtobecomeimbalancedfirstandformanypeoplearethereasonforweightgainintimesofstress. Cortisolalsohasadirecteffectonhealthyhormonelevelsinwomen.Estrogenandprogesteronebalance iscrucial foroptimalmetabolicrate.Ifawomanisinanestrogendominant

state,shewillstoremorefatandactuallydiminishheramountof free thyroidhormones,whichwill further slowdownhermetabolism.Womencanbecomeestrogendominantinmanyways.SyntheticHRTandbirthcontrolpillsaswellasenviron-mentalexposuretoestrogensfoundinfoodandothersourcescause estrogen dominance. Excess cortisol production candepleteprogesteronelevelsandcauseestrogendominance.

Dopamine and SerotoninDopamineandSerotoninlevelsarealmostalwaysdiminishedinpeoplewhoaredealingwithlong-termstress.Thesechemi-cal imbalancesareknownby increasedcravings;especiallyforcarbohydrates.ThebodyreleasesSerotonininresponsetoeatingcarbohydrates,whichiswheretheterm“comfortfood”comesfrom.WhenSerotoninisreleased,wefeelgood.Dopa-mineisreleasedinresponsetodrinkingalcohol,whichalsomakesusfeelgood.Itiseasytoseehowlowlevelsoftheseneurotransmitterscanleadtoweightgain.

Money TalksIn1997,afteryearsofquietlyteach-ingandpracticingintegrativemedicineinArizona,WeilwaspropelledfromrelativeobscuritytothecoverofTimemagazine.Hehassincebecomeago-toresourceforbothlawmakersandotherdoctorsseek-inghealthcareadvice.Weilbelievesthatmoney,orlackthereof,madeithappen.“Noamountofideologicalargumenteverchangedanything,”hereflects.Inthiscase,“Itwaswhenpocketbooksstartedgettingsqueezedthatpeoplestartedpayingattention.Thingsaregoingtogetalotworse,andwhentheydo,thewisdomofwhatwearedoingwillbecomeevenmoreapparent.”DuringcongressionaltestimonybeforetheSenatecommitteeonhealth,education,laborandpensionslastFeb-ruary,WeiljoinedheartphysicianandhealthguruDr.DeanOrnishandothersinrattlingoffastunninglistofstatistics:

TheUnitedStatescurrentlyspends16percentofitsgrossdomesticproductonhealthcare,morethananyothercoun-tryintheworld,yetitshealthoutcomesareranked37thintheworldbytheWorldHealthOrganization.In2006,insur-ancecompaniescovered1.3millioncoronaryangioplastyprocedures,atroughly$48,000each,and448,000coro-narybypassoperationsatacostof$99,000.Yet,thingslikenutritioncounseling,exerciseprogramsandstress-reductionclasses,whichstudiesshowcouldpreventasmuchas90percentofallheartdisease,aretypicallynotcoveredbyinsurance. Behaviorsofautisminclude:failuretorespondtostimuliormakeeyecontact;speechdelays;compulsivebehaviorlikehead-shaking;stackingobjectsorintenserepetitionofdailyactivities;andextremenoisesensitivity. Foryears,researchintothecausesofautismhasre-volvedaroundgenetics.Evenastherateofautismamongthenation’schildrencontinuestoriseatanastonishing10to17percentayear,researchhasbeenslowtoshiftitsfocustootherfactors—namely,environmentaltoxins.

The Chemical Connection Newautismresearchismakingthecasethatenvironmen-taltoxinssuchasmercury,lead,polychlorinatedbiphenyls(PCBs),flameretardantsandpharmaceuticaldrugs—includ-ingantidepressantsinuteroorantibioticsininfancy—maybeaggravatingapre-existinggeneticcondition. YetJamesAdams,headoftheAutism/Asperger’sRe-searchProgramatArizonaStateUniversity,remarksthat,“Thereisstillextremelylittlemoneyoutthereforlookingintoenvironmentalissues.” Adams’ownresearchhasdiscoveredacorrelationbetweenheavymetalexposureandautismseverity.Inonestudy,Dimercaptosuccinicacid(DMSA),amedicationusedtotreatleadpoisoning,wasadministeredtochildrenwithautism.Theresearchersfoundthatchildrenwithautism“dumpedthreetimesasmuchmercuryastypicalchildren,”reportsAdams,suggestingthattheirbodiescouldnotprop-erlyexcretethetoxin.Inanotherstudy,thebabyteethofchil-

drenwithautismwerefoundtocontaintwicethemercuryasthoseoftypicalchildren. Adams’findingshavealsouncoveredonecommonthreadinthemedicalhistoryofchildrenwithautism:heavyuseoforalantibioticsininfancy.Heexplainsthatantibiot-icsdisruptthegut’sgoodflora,furtherdiminishingthechild’sabilitytoexcretetoxins.Suchtreatmentsareprimarilyusedforrecurringearinfections,butasDr.JerryKartzinelreportsinhisbook,Healing and Preventing Autism(co-writtenwithceleb-rityautismtreatmentadvocateJennyMcCarthy),thosefrequentearinfectionsare,“themostcommonmarkerforimmunesystemdysfunction...inbabiesandveryyoungchildren.”

calsviacleaningproducts,bothduringpregnancyandafterbirth.Homemadesubstitutes,usingingredientslikedistilledwhitevinegarandbakingsoda,aresafe(andcheap)alter-natives. Otherchemicalculprits?Plasticcontainersandbathtoyscanleechchemicalswhenheated,cleanedorusedforteeth-ing.Carseatsandcribmattressesmadewithflameretardants,aswellastoyswithleadpaint,carrytoxins. A2005studyfromthenonprofitwatchdogEnvironmen-talWorkingGroupfoundanaverageof200industrialchemi-calsandpollutantsinumbilicalcordbloodsamplesfrom10babiesborninU.S.hospitalsaroundthecountry.Ofthese,thereportsaid,“180causecancerinhumansandanimals,217aretoxictothebrainandnervoussystemand208causebirthdefects...inanimaltests.” Forchildrenwhomayhaveanunderlyinggeneticpredispositiontoautism,thechemicaloverloadstartsearly.Increasingitthroughallergy-triggeringdiets,anoverloadofantibioticsand/ormercury-containingvaccinescouldhavedangerous,long-lastingconsequences.Informedparentsknowtotakeprecautionsearlyandoften.
