In 2006, a group of intrepidpioneers were sent out to becomelaborers for Gods harvest.Together, this group of pioneersplanted the Church of the Nativity,

which over the last seven years has been one of thefastest-growing congregations in The EpiscopalChurch. Thanks to the dedication and commitment ofmany of you, we moved into our own building lastyear; and our new location has contributed to churchattendance that is 30% higher in 2013 than 2012, so farthis year.

Happily, after seven years, we still have our pioneerspirit. This church continually amazes me with itsenergy and its dedication to reaching new people forChrist. We dont try to grow just for the sake of gettingbigger; we try to reach new people because we believewe have good news worth sharing. The good news isthat Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came into this worldfor us. In his death and resurrection, he united us withGod and gave us the gift of eternal life in Godskingdom. In his life, he demonstrated what Godskingdom is: a place where love, peace and justicereign; where everyones basic needs are met; where

people forgive and are forgiven, so they can be restoredin relationship with God and one another. This is life-transforming news: it is news that could change theworld.

This good news is worth sharing. Thats why Nativitycontinually looks at how to reach new people,to share what we have found in Christ and inour church community with others.

This fall, we are beginning some new growthinitiatives. First is our new service schedule.

Adding a new service is one of the mosteffective ways a church can grow and reachnew people. The more options a church has in worship style, times, etc. the more peopleit can reach. And when a worship service isconsistently 70% full, as our 10:00 service hasbeen, research shows that a church stopsgrowing. Newcomers arrive and literally feelthat there is no place for them. Adding a newservice creates places for new people to fit. Iam excited about starting a Jazz/Gospel

Eucharist because this music has a long religious traditionyet also speaks to the American heart in a different waythan our traditional Anglican music. Both are beautifuland inspiring, and I look forward to sharing both withyou!

Our second big initiative is a way of growing notnecessarily larger, but deeper. Being a disciple of Christmeans a lifelong process of learning, growing, andserving. Our Adult Formation Council has created awhole menu of different adult formation offerings, toprovide opportunities for people of all levels of religious

experience and time availability. Please take a look at ournew adult offerings in the special insert and decide whichones work for you.

And as always, our childrens and youth formation arehigh priorities at Nativity. I am delighted to be workingwith our new youth director, Julie Bogle, and our almost-new childrens director, Shelley Byrnes. These twodynamite women have a terrific year planned for ourchildren and teens. See pages 8 to 10 for our fallprograms.

Growth in Christ means growing in size and growing in

depth. This fall, at Nativity, we have the opportunity to doboth. I hope youll join in!

    In Christ,Susan

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every townand place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, The harvest is plentiful, but thelaborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

New opportunities for adult Christian learning and spiritual growth arecoming your way this fall. Please see all the information about theseexciting new offerings in the special insert by Dr. Wayne Whitney.

ARE YOU THE CURIOUS TYPE?Do you like learning? Are you comfortable using a computer (even

somewhat)? Enjoy talking about faith, spirituality and religious stuff? Want a

safe place to ask questions youve wanted to have answered or at least

discussed? Looking for a group where you can do all of that without leavingthe comfort of your den, living room, or wherever? Then Education for

Ministry (EfM) Online might just what youre looking for.

Ministry is not just for ordained people who wear white collars! Every

Christian is a minister whether inside the church or out in the world. EfM is a

four-year program of theological learning designed especially for lay people

who want to go deeper into the Bible, church history, theology, ecumenical relations and the role of ministry in

their lives. In EfM Online we have people from all over the country (and sometimes outside the US) who meet

once a week for 90 minutes in a classroom situation and nobody cares if you are in your pajamas! If you travel

a lot, are a snowbird, cant drive at night, or just enjoy the world of cyberspace, this is a great opportunity to be

part of an EfM community from wherever you are. If you would like more information, please contact LindaRyan at [email protected] (call 623.695.3344) or leave a message in the church office.

    ARE YOU AN EfM ALUMNI/AE?

Do you miss the theological reflections? The text discussions? The feeling of community with others who

share an interest in learning? Heres something for you!

We are looking to see how many alumnai/ae we have who might be interested in getting together several times

during the program year for discussion, reflection, worship and fellowship. It might be monthly, it might be

quarterly were open to your input. If youre interested in this program, please contact Linda Ryan at

[email protected] (phone 623.695.3344) or leave a message in the office.

Lets see how we can build this group together. Also, please ask about the EfM Alumni/ae Association if you

arent already a member. Its a great way to support EfM with a donation that goes towards scholarships for

some who might not otherwise be able to participate in the program and get some nice benefits for yourself as

    well!

PAGE 6 A NOTE FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR

During my holiday in JulyI travelled to 4 countries inEurope. In the beginning of ourtrip my husband, son and I werein Poland where we visited ourrelatives and friends, and Iperformed solo organ recitals. Then we went on a trip Southfrom Poland. First we travelled tothe Czech Republic where we sawa very unique Bone Chapel inKutna Hora. This church, alsocalled Ossuary, comes from thetime of the 17th century 30-years

war when the number of burials outgrew the spaceavailable. The older remains had to be exhumed and storedin the chapel. It is estimated that nowadays the chapelcontains the bones of up to 40,000 people. (photo 1)

After visiting the Czech Republic, we drove toAustria where I played a solo recital at the beautifulBenedictine Abbey in Sankt Lambrecht. I was honored tobe a part of the festivities for the 10th year anniversary ofthe fabulous instrument built in a historically informedstyle by Westenfelder (photo 2). After this musical treat wedrove to Italy. We visited Venice and its beautiful churches.I was also able to play one of the oldest extant Italianinstruments from 1533, located in Valvasone, an hour drivenorth east from Venice. The organ is in perfect condition, restored in a very precise way a few years ago (photo 3).Also in Poland I saw two very beautiful instruments, one ina southwestern city named Wo!w (photo 4), and in the

North, close to Gda"sk (Danzig) in Pas!#k. The former wmade by Casparini in 1717, and the latter by Hildebrandt1719. These two stunning 18th century organs, also inperfect condition due to recent high quality renovations, a source of pride in Poland. Dr. Ilona Kubiaczyk-Adler.

OVER 1000 PEOPLE WERE FED ON July 4th! THANK YOU NATIVITY!Thank you to everyone who donated supplies and money to the 4th of July Cookout for the Homeless, it was a hugesuccess. The men, women and children were very appreciative and so polite; I havent heard that many thank youmaam or sir(s) in a long time. It was a really hot day, but all of the volunteers kept smiling and working; the energy ofthe event was amazing. Volunteers used vans to collect the homeless from their hangouts and bring them to the BBQ.Some who came were neighborhood families struggling to make ends meet. There were plenty of burgers, hot dogs, water, chips and fresh watermelon; plus people were treated to a sno-cone when they arrived- a great way to welcome

people in the heat. This years count was over 1,000 and everyone left with full bellies, take-home snacks and water, plus donated clothing and shoes. Thank you to Nativity for making this event a truly special success. For those who areinterested, next year we would like to take a group of volunteers to help at the event. All of your donations made adifference to the Gunnell family and especially those served at the event. Thank you.

NOW COLLECTING NEW: BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES BACKPACKS, CLOTHING

For the seventh year in a row, Nativity is pleased to participate in this annual collection for school children and isseeking donations of new back to school supplies, backpacks, tennis shoes, socks, school uniform pants and skirts. While Nativitys collection focus is generally on backpacks and school supplies, certain clothing items are alsoneeded in all sizes for youth from kindergarten through high school. Please drop off all donations to the HealingChapel at Nativity no later than Sunday, August 11. Nativity will celebrate a Blessing of the Backpacks on August 11for Nativity members returning to school and for all items collected for charity.

The efforts of the Nativity Parish, our friends and our partners at Trinity and Diocese have, again, come together toaccomplish great things. Over the course of the last 13 months we have been able to raise enough money to add apermanent, hurricane-proof roof to the school in La Laguna, in Veracruz, Mexico.

What does this mean? It means that once the roof is completed they will no longer sustain damage to their supplies everytime they get a heavy rainstorm, tropical storm or hurricane. It also means that there will be a safe building in the barrioin which families can take shelter during inclement weather. Finally, it will also provide the foundation for the secondfloor of the building which will be completed in phase two of this project.

The school, under the leadership of Reverend Goldi Santana Mera, is doing great things for the community. There havebeen a number of graduations over the last year. Goldi has also implemented an adult education program which isteaching parents in the community to read and to achieve high school graduation equivalency. The school continues toprovide care and education to infants through preschool aged students, as well as daily instruction and reinforcement inEnglish and academics. Lastly, Goldi and the students make baked goods on a weekly basis to sell in the community,

providing life skills to the students while earning muchneeded income for the school.

We are currently discussing the implementation ofbuilding the new roof, the timing, the funding, and thehelp needed to complete this project, as well as the dailysupport of the school. If you are interested in being apart of this, please watch the announcements andnewsletters for upcoming meetings or see one of the lalaguna team members - Claire Smith, Steve Smith, SarahDobbins, Jeff Jameson or David Smith.

The week was fun and filled with learning about who we areand whose we are. We learned about how God gave us eachspecial talents for a reason and how we are all part of the bodof Christ. Eventually, we learned that because God is with usalways and Jesus loved us enough to give his life for us, wehave been transformed by Grace.

    Mission Possible 2013:

! Our Youth Mission Week this year was great! This wasa great kick off for me as the new youth director. I was ableto get to know the awesome students that are involved in oyouth ministry! We are so blessed with students that arewilling to give up days in their summer to serve in many

different capacities. It was such an honor to serve alongsidthese wonderful students. I believe I walked away from thisexperience transformed because of them!! We were able to go to Epiphany in Gila Bend to helpwith some remodeling they needed to do. We were also abto have Harriet help us learn how to do story telling. The neday we went to Matthews Crossing to help in the food bankAfter the food bank we went to St. Lukes At The Mountain help publicize thedifferent ministries

they are doing this year. The following day we went to Tucson to learnabout Imago Dei Middle School, an Episcopal school that serves

underprivileged students in Tucson, and help them get set up for thenew school year. Finally, we finished our week serving with St. AndrewsEpiscopal Church, Nogales, at their Childrens Medical clinic.! All of these experiences truly helped enrich our lives. We wereable to serve others, learn what it means to love our neighbors asourselves, and grow in our walk with God. It was great to see how Godused all of these students to further His kingdom.

    Worship Sunday

    Through August 11th

    8:00 & 10:00 a.m.

    Beginning August 18th!

    8:00 & 9:30 & 11:30 a.m.

New Sunday Service Schedule Begins August 18th!

During the program year, our 10:00 service consistently runs about 75 80 % full. Churches stop growing when

they are consistently this full newcomers get the message that there literally is no room for them. The vestry

has considered how to provide more worship opportunities, and have decided to modify our Sunday schedule

slightly to add a third Sunday morning service, which will be a lively, informal Jazz/Gospel service. Beginning

August 18, our Sunday schedule will be:

8:00 Rite I Eucharist with Hymns

9:30 Rite II Traditional Eucharist (same as our current 10:00 service) with Childrens Chapel

10:45 Hospitality and Christian Education for all ages

    11:30 Jazz/Gospel Eucharist

    5:00 Youth Group

We are excited about the diversity of choices, and the opportunity this

new schedule gives us to reach new people for Christ! If you are

interested in being a ministry leader or participant at the new 11:30 Jazz/

Gospel service, please contact Pastor Susan at

[email protected] - or watch the bulletin for details.
