September 2019
A note from the Rector…
By the time you read this, I will be halfway through my trip
to Ireland. I am traveling with a friend and while we will do
plenty of sightseeing, a major purpose is to visit his family,
so I think our trip will be different from most tourist trips.
Personally, I know how wonderful it is to visit another part
of the world, especially one where you have ancestral roots.
I first went to Sicily in 1978, and met my grandfather’s
brother and sister plus many of his nieces and nephews. I
have stayed in touch with some and visited twice since then.
Every time I go, I feel at home there, even though I have
never learned the language. I’m very excited to visit next
year as part of my sabbatical.
Feeling at home in a place, even one that is different from our daily routines, is comforting. This is true of our
spiritual homes. I’ve been fortunate to participate in Episcopal and Anglican church services in various parts of
the world: Toronto, Canada; Cape Town, South Africa; Hong Kong; Canterbury and Salisbury, England;
Jerusalem, Israel; and Rome, Italy. Spiritual homes all over the world. Familiar words and rites. All of this is a
reminder of the breadth, glory and diversity of our Christian faith, even within our own denomination. It is a
reminder of the power of the message and teaching of Jesus Christ.
Throughout the year, we observe the various heritage months recognized by the US government. It’s just a
reminder of the power of Jesus Christ to unite across so many barriers that divide our nations and our societies.
Love, Rebecca+

Vestry Report – June 12, 2019
Telling Our Story – Evangelism
At this Vestry meeting, we shared 6-word (plus or minus) stories to describe our church. Here are some of the
creative stories:
Prayerful Family Inspiring Individual Spiritual Growth
Love One Another As I Love You
Nativity Continues Its Outstanding Community Outreach
Loving Our Neighbors In The World
Unknown Jewel In Newport
Church Feeds People Spiritually and Physically
At our September meeting, members will complete the following statement in regards to the church: Wouldn’t
it be wonderful if….
Letters to an American Christian by Bruce Riley Ashford
Bill Rohm led a discussion on the first chapter of this book, No Public Nudity, Please. The chapter answered the
question, What is the relationship between religion and politics? The book is organized as letters to a college
student who is a new Christian. His name is Christian.
In this first chapter, Mr. Ashford emphasizes that we cannot separate religion from politics in our lives. He
gives three reasons why:
Human beings are deeply and inescapably religious. He says, “All human being commit themselves to
somebody or something in an ultimate way. All human beings have somebody or something to which they give
their highest trust and love.”
Secondly, “because religion involves our ultimate commitments, we cannot separate our public self from our
private self.”
Thirdly, “Our Christian faith functions as the deepest motivation for contributing to the common good of the
nation.”
Certainly food for thought.
At our September meeting, we will review the Continuum on Becoming an Anti-Racist Multi-Cultural Church,
developed by The Rev. Joseph Barndt. Rev. Barndt is an ordained Lutheran Pastor and author. He is currently
working with our Diocese on our eliminating racism work.
Our Finances
Vestry reviewed our financial reports for June and July. Total income through July 31 was $196,541. Total
expenses were $167,848 leaving a surplus of $28,723. This is consistent with this time of year, because we
receive a larger check from the Bechtel Trust in June. This year we received $83,412.
After our August mortgage payment, the principle is $63,283.
Stewardship of our Property
2019 Projects
The repairs to our front porch have been completed. Painting is delayed
until the wood cures. The kitchen porch roof has been completed and
should be painted this fall. New ceiling fans and lights were installed in the
first floor of the parish house. These items work on wall switches, rather
than remotes. Sue Beamer and Darlene Amsler are working on new
kneelers for St. Stephen’s. Darlene Amsler has ordered material to make
the hangings for the pulpit and lectern to match our white vestment set.
The wall repairs have been completed in the sanctuary. Painting will occur
this fall.
Upcoming projects include repair and coating of the “bricks” in the church
property. The Diocese has purchased “Love Your Neighbor” banners to
hang outside. See Photo. The Property Committee will find a place to hang
them.
Stormwater Damage
An insurance claim has been submitted. Bill Day and Michele are continuing to follow the reimbursement of
this claim.
Our Leadership – Nominating Committee Appointed
Shannon Burns and Kay Cramer are the nominating committee for 2020 leadership. There are 2-3 openings for
members of Vestry. Kay can run for a second term; however, Shannon has served six years and cannot serve
another term. The committee will also seek people to serve as Delegate and Alternate Delegate to the 2020
Diocesan Convention. If you are interested in any of these positions, please let them know.
The next meeting is Wednesday, September 11, 6pm.
PC PRIDE:
Passionate
Respect
Identity
Determination
Equality
We are hosting the first meeting of PC Pride for youth who are
LGBT and their friends. The meeting will be held on Sunday,
September 8, 5pm at the church. Saranne Miller will supervise the
group. Rebecca will also attend. The Program and Mission
Committee set aside GTO funds in 2018 to support this initiative. The group hopes to provide support,
education, service projects and fundraising for their activities.

Shaped by Faith beginning this fall. This is a three-part initiative to discern, discover,
and create a right-shaped diocese to serve God’s
mission with vitality and strength. Clusters of
parishes will examine their future together through
projects designed to explore vitality and values,
financial sustainability and God’s call in the
neighborhood; no-cost Parish Life courses at the
Stevenson School for Ministry will be offered and a
historicizing project called “Rooted in God” will
celebrate our common story. The adventure begins
at Convention 2019.

The Episcopal and Anglican churches along
our southern border are helping shelter
families who have been approved by the
United States Government to seek asylum. These families and individuals are awaiting their
Asylum court dates. Right now, monetary donations
are needed, because once families pass the first part
of the asylum process, they are being sent to
Mexico to await their court date. Monetary
donations are the easiest way to help those churches
shelter these individuals and families. Donations
can be sent to:
Diocese of the Rio Grande, 6400 Coors Blvd NW,
Albuquerque NM 87120
