School News: With 2019 well under way, things have been busy at St. Mary School! On Thursday 1/3, the middle school students traveled to Milwaukee to visit the Milwau-kee Art Museum and War Memorial. The students enjoyed finding artists they had studied in class, as well as seeing a variety of works! They also enjoyed a presentation about Milwaukee Veterans over lunch. On Friday 1/4, Mrs. Hodge hosted a wonderful student show case of Art at PAC. Thank you to all who came! It was a wonderful event that truly showed the talent of our students. We are happy to be hosting Fellowship Weekend this weekend, so come on down after mass! Upcoming Events: 1/15: P4J Open House 1/21: No School for Students; Staff Professional Development 1/22: Strings Concert (6:30) 1/28 – 2/1: Catholic Schools Week 2/1: Spaghetti Dinner

Illness & Preparation for the Mass While Catholics are obligated to attend Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, a serious reason may cause you to miss. Being sick is a serious reason for being excused from the obligation to attend Mass. If you have the flu or some other serious and/or contagious illness, please stay home. (Another common serious reason is severe weather.)

If you feel you have a cold or if you have a compromised immune system, please don’t shake hands with others during the sign of peace. You may smile and say, “The peace of the Lord be with you.”

If Holy Communion is offered under both forms, please do not consume the Precious Blood if you are not feeling well or if you have a compromised immune system.

SCRIP REMINDER

SCRIP cards are available for purchase in the school office and after Mass twice per month ….. next up, the weekend of January 19th/20th..

Thank you for supporting your parish and school!

Would You Like A Pastoral Visit?

REMINDER: If you, a family member or someone you

know is confined or hospitalized and would benefit from a

pastoral visit, please contact your parish office and let them

know. Staff does not always know of hospital admissions for

a variety of reasons and often has no way of knowing of other

situations in which a parish contact would be beneficial.

Safe Haven Sunday: Equipping the Family, Safeguarding Children

The family home is to be a safe haven. But the inappropriate use of technology in the home deprives it of this role, and is the greatest threat to the sanctity of marriages and families today. Pornography and other online threats are often one click away, and parents can feel overwhelmed with not knowing how to best protect their children in our fast-paced digital world.

Next weekend, January 19th & 20th, the Diocese of Madison is taking a bold step to help families by celebrating Safe Haven Sunday. This awareness day will provide access to practical resources that any caring adult can use to protect themselves and our young people from online risks.

Please join us with your prayers and presence as we prepare for this unique event. To learn more, please

contact [email protected], or visit madisondiocese.org/safehavensunday.

The Baptism of the Lord

After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. - Lk 3:21-22a

************************************************************** Think of what it's like to wait a long time. Can you imagine what it would be like to wait for centuries? No one person lives that long, of course. But for the Israelites, they had heard the stories from generation to generation. They had been conquered time and time again, and now "the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ." They had been waiting for a Messiah, one who did miraculous deeds and said profound things; someone aglow with the glory of God. We all know what it's like to hope and be disappointed. But what if your hopes were fulfilled? That day at the Jordan River, an audience had gathered. Among the crowd for baptism was an unknown man. Perhaps he was dirty from weeks in the desert. His hands had the calloused palms of a tradesman, a carpenter. He and John the Baptist may have embraced with the familiarity of the cousins they were. This man wades into the Jordan for a good, solid dunking. As he rises from the water, the One who breathed life into Adam gasps for air like any other man. But then "heaven was opened." The clouds in the sky part miles above. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove." An apparition with substance sails through the sky. It exudes gentleness and power all at once. "And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.'" Can you imagine the sight? For the crowd, there is no doubting what they have seen, who they have seen. Can you imagine this encounter with our God who keeps His promises? What are you waiting for?

What’s Happening

Taize’ Prayer began in the little community of Taize’, France during the 1940s following the destruction of World War II. A group of religious men sought to create an ecumenical form of prayer that would foster reconciliation and peace among all people.

Today, Taize’ Prayer is celebrated throughout the world, bringing Christians of all traditions together to sing, to hear God’s words in Scripture, and to listen in silence for God’s voice in their hearts.

In that spirit, we gather at St. Mary’s as we have since February 1998, to offer this prayer. You are invited to experience Taize’ Prayer here on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 PM. You will find it an opportunity to take a few moments from the busyness of your life and simply be in God’s presence.

Christmas is over, and now we can pause and savor the delights of the season and look ahead to a new year. Perhaps this is the time to make a difference in your prayer life. If you have thought about participating in Taize’ Prayer but just haven’t made a commitment to do

so, resolve that 2019 will be the year that you say “yes” to that invitation. Join us for Taize’ Prayer on Monday, January 14 at 7:00 PM. As always, our time together will be a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds and refresh our spirits. Come and bask in the light of candles and the warmth of friendship, raise your voices in simple and prayerful songs, attend to God’s message in Scripture, and listen in silence for God’s voice in your

Human Trafficking is now the second largest criminal industry in the world earning as estimated $32 billion a year. It may one day overtake the illegal drug trade because while a drug can only be purchased and used once, a single sex slave can be used many times a day for years. The most com-mon form of human trafficking involving U.S. citizens is domestic sex trafficking. The majority of American victims are women and children. Runaways are particularly vulnerable, but traffickers also work to lure weens and teens away from their families.

80% of human trafficking in Wisconsin is sex trafficking.

Average age a child is coerced into the sex trade is 13.

92% of know sex-trafficking cases in Milwaukee involve children.
