Geography
• Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia
• It is unique because it is comprised of 17,508 island, but only 6,000 are inhabited
• The largest islands are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, New Guinea, and Sulawesi

• Indonesia is the 16th largest country in regards to landmass, at 741,050 sq mi
• It contains the worlds most populous island, Java, which has 2,435 people per sq mi
• Indononesia is located a fault line and has many earthquakes and active volcanos.

People
• The population of Indonesia is over 222 million, and 130 million of those people live on the island of Java.
• Most Indonesians descended from Austronesian-speaking people originating in Taiwan.
• The national language is Indonesian, but most people also speak local languages.

• There are six allowed religions: Islam, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism
• However, Indonesia is the most populous Muslim-majority nation
• The government is a republic with a presidential system.

Culture
• There are around 300 ethnic groups in Indonesia
• The culture has been influenced by Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Malay, and European sources
• The most dominant influence has been from India

• Sports are mainly male-oriented• The main sports are badminton and
football.• Rice is the staple food of Indonesia• Indonesians have a strong oral
tradition by which they pass down they cultural identities
• The Indonesian film industry has risen steadily in the past decade

History
• The majority of the population is Ausonesian, and were said to have migrated from Taiwan.
• Trade with Indian and Chinese peoples has shaped the history of Indonesia.
• The Dutch controlled most of the land during the colonial period.

• Indonesian got its independence officially in December 1949.
• Its first president was Sukarno who exercised authoritarianism.
• After Sukarno resigned, Indonesian had its first direct presidential election, in 2004.
