18 APRIL – 18 MAY2015

The National Trust of Australia (Queensland) is proud to be presenting the 2015 Heritage Festival.

This year’s national theme ‘Conflict and Compassion’ recognises many important aspects of our history but this year focuses on stories of people in wartime, as we acknowledge the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.

While many of this year’s events uncover fascinating aspects of our wartime history, there are many other stories to discover within this theme about our Indigenous heritage, hospitals and nurses and cemeteries, just to

name a few. There are also events linked to railway history as we celebrate 150 years of rail travel in Queensland.

In all, the Heritage Festival is about stories of people - ordinary people, doing extraordinary things.

I thank all the participants, many of whom are volunteers, for hosting an activity in this year’s Festival. It is inspiring to see so many events in regional Queensland this year.

We encourage all Queenslanders to get involved in our Heritage Festival by taking part in some of these many special activities and learning more

about how our identity and heritage have been shaped by conflict and compassion.

We are again very pleased to be linking our Heritage Festival to the Australian Government’s Australian Heritage Week celebrations and thank the Australian Government for continuing to support the National Trust’s Heritage Festivals across the nation.

Dr Ian Galloway President National Trust of Australia (Queensland)

Australian Heritage Week is held from Saturday 11 April to

Sunday 19 April 2015. This national event is an

opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate

the places and stories that makes Australia special.

For more information or to register an event visit the web site

http://heritage-week.govspace.gov.au

The National Trust of Australia (Queensland) respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands of Queensland and pays respect to the Elders, past and present. Readers are advised that this program may contain images of people who have passed.

DISCLAIMER: Many of the events in this program are run by organisations other than the National Trust and are included to support their activities that promote Queensland’s heritage.

It is strongly recommended that you contact the event organisers before travelling to confirm the advertised arrangements. There is the possibility that some of these events will not take place for a variety of reasons, including weather conditions, and this is beyond the control of the National Trust.

Visit www.nationaltrustfestival.org.au to view events online.

The Australian Government supports the National Trust Heritage Festival through funding and promotion of events on the Australian Heritage Week website.

redlands in the time of world war 1Presented by Redland City Council – Redland LibrariesBefore WWI, life in our Redlands was very different from life here today. Local historian Peter Ludlow will recall life as it was then, and how it changed as the result of the war. Like all other communities in Australia, our young men flocked to enlist in the AIF and to experience their ‘great adventure’. How soon it was to change for them in the hell of Gallipoli and the Western Front. Bookings are required.

Other animals used by the AIF, such as pigeons, dogs, mules, camels and donkeys, suffered the same fate. Lest we forget our four legged diggers served too. in their own words – letters from the frontPresented by Maryborough Wide Bay & Burnett Historical Society Inc.Researched from the Maryborough Chronicles, ‘In Their Own Words – Letters from the Front’ takes extracts from the book of the same title published for the Centenary of WWI. Letters from Diggers to home were published at the time and shared with the local community. These letters give a fascinating insight into how stories of war activities were softened for those at home. Some of the Diggers made it home – some didn’t.
