Messages from Thomas D. Hewitt and Chipper Wichman

It is my great honor to serve as chairman of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Although we have some of the most beautiful gardens in the world, and are respected worldwide for the science we do and the plants we save from extinction, it is the people – our superb staff, our Board, our supporters – that differentiate us from other world-class gardens. We are a hands-on organization and we are all willing to roll up our sleeves to work. On behalf of the Board, I thank each and every one of you.

— Tom Hewitt, Chairman of the Board of Trustees

Aloha to all of our Board members and supporters. After celebrating the Garden’s 50th anniversary in 2014, last year – 2015 – was an important one for the Garden. Not only did we continue with our half-century-long tradition of advancing plant science, conservation, and education, we welcomed new Board members, volunteers, and highly-skilled staff to help fulfill our mission.

The year 2015 saw noteworthy contributions to new plant discoveries and data published, and significant growth in our seed bank, herbarium, and living collections. From our five gardens and five preserves to the increasingly high-profile Breadfruit Institute, our inter-agency collaborations in science and conservation, and over a dozen exciting education and public outreach programs, NTBG continues to have an impact throughout Hawai‘i, the Pacific, and around the world.

Thanks to your support, the work we do helps promote a greater understanding and appreciation of our natural world while protecting the plant life that sustains all of us and the countless other creatures with whom we share this beautiful, fragile planet.

Thank you for your help and for playing a vital role in our continued and future success.

— Chipper Wichman, President, Director and Chief Executive OfficerChipper Wichman,

As Garden supporters, board members, staff, and volunteers, we all play a vital role in advancing the work of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG). Each of us contributes to helping our organization fulfill its mission to advance plant discovery, scientific research, conservation, and education.

Most of us are not the field botanists rappelling down high cliff faces, exploring remote valleys, or botanizing in tropical forests in search of undiscovered plants yet we share their passion. We also hold a common belief in NTBG’s mission and a commitment to protecting the environment. And each of us has the potential to help save plants, better understand our natural world, and make this planet a better place for our children and grandchildren.

As NTBG supporters, our impact can be measured in many ways — the number of plants collected and seeds saved, the acreage of wild habitat protected, and so on. But our impact extends far beyond these tangible signs and includes things like fostering a greater appreciation for the role of science in our daily lives, the value of promoting wildlife conservation, and advocating for a more biodiverse world.

We believe NTBG plays a meaningful, even critical role in contributing to the health of the planet. Today we live in an age of great consequence when, even as many forms of life face unprecedented perils, we are also equipped with the tools, the experience, and the resolve to meet the most daunting of challenges — and to succeed.

Climate change, environmental degradation, habitat destruction, and other ecological crises all threaten plant life and lead to the loss of irreplaceable biodiversity. The proverbial clock is ticking, we cannot afford to fail, and so our work continues.

Your support is essential to our success, and vital to our survival.

Together, we are having a positive impact.

In 2015, the Science and Conservation Department

played an active role collaborating with the newly

informed International Center for Tropical Botany and

other partners in Hawai‘i and across the Pacific. The

department made advances in taxonomic and floristics

research, seed banking, rugged terrain field work,

with NTBG collections and exhibitions, workshops,

publications, and public outreach.

In April, NTBG hired conservation biologist Seana Walsh, in part to focus on implementing the Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation, which includes making targeted collections of Hawaiian species of conservation importance for propagation and seed storage. Strategy efforts involve collecting voucher-documented propagation materials for addition to our living collections and long-term storage in our seed bank.

NTBG’s Seed Bank operations were relocated to the Botanical Research Center in 2015, helping further integrate the seed bank with our research efforts. New equipment, like a top-of-the-line germination chamber and minus 40°F freezer, along with the hiring of new seed bank manager Dustin Wolkis builds our own capacity, allowing for greater collaboration and the advancement of NTBG’s efforts to save Hawai‘i’s irreplaceable flora. In 2015, our Seed Bank accessioned 172 seed collections comprised of more than 300,000 seeds that have been added to storage.

NTBG’s fieldwork yielded important results last year through ongoing studies, discoveries, and collaborations with conservation partners like the State of Hawai‘i Plant Extinction Prevention

Program and other state agencies. Research Biologist Ken Wood focused on rugged terrain areas and has rediscovered and mapped populations of several rare and presumed extinct species, as well as discovering several new species.

Using field-tested new technology, our staff now uses smartphones to upload data directly to our database for a more efficient, streamlined process. At the same time, we’ve increased the size of our bryophyte (mosses and liverworts) and lichen collection by over 1,100 specimens.

Through our efforts in science and conservation, we continue to have a positive impact in a multitude of other ways. One of the most important of these was spearheading a training workshop for some two dozen conservation experts on the assessment process required to add the entire Hawaiian flora to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. We’ve also been increasing and improving our herbarium collection, making notable headway in digitizing plant and habitat images, implementing new GIS techniques, and contributing to efforts to complete the Flora of the Marquesas, the Flora of the Cook Islands, and the Flora of Samoa.

NTBG Science and Conservation staff contributed to discoveries and data published in 26 research papers and peer-reviewed journals and books.

Finding, growing, collecting, and protecting plants is central

to NTBG’s mission. The work of our Living Collections &

Horticulture Department revolves around our Conservation

and Horticulture Center on Kaua‘i’s South Shore. This

is where our plant collectors, nursery staff, scientists,

researchers, and even Garden visitors converge. By its very

nature, this multi-faceted department is always growing

and poised to have a great impact across the organization

in Hawai‘i, Florida, and beyond.

As a botanical garden, keeping track of our collections and updating our records is essential to our work. In 2015, more than 10,500 records were created and/or edited for NTBG’s Living Collections Database. We conducted inventories for the following: Native Hawaiian plants, the McBryde Garden palmetum (various palm species), and collections of economic, aesthetic, ethnobotanical, horticultural, scientific, and conservation value.

Our mapping efforts increased in 2015 by 46 percent, meaning we plotted nearly 2,000 more plants than the previous year. We finished mapping McBryde Garden along with almost half of Allerton Garden. Additionally, we were able to expand our strategic collection of Native Hawaiian plants in order to better understand native ecosystems. These collections have focused on rare plants from remote mountain peaks such as Mt. Haupu on the island of Kaua‘i.

In August 2015, the Garden welcomed the return of more than one thousand Asplenium ferns endemic to Kaua‘i after being propagated by NTBG research associate Ruth Aguraiuja in her lab at the Tallinn Botanic Garden. Working under a memorandum of understanding, these rare ferns were hand-delivered from Estonia to the Horticulture Center where they were cared for until they were ready to be transferred to a higher elevation and finally outplanted in their native habitat in the spring of 2016.

As part of NTBG’s 2015 efforts, we added more than 3,400 plants to our Hawai‘i gardens and restoration sites, half of which were federally listed endangered species. We also grew and delivered over 10,000 plants to a restoration site on Kaua‘i’s North Shore for use in helping re-establish a nesting colony for Hawaiian Petrels.

NTBG’s most recent nursery inventory lists nearly 36,900 live plants.

The Breadfruit Institute (BFI) has become the international resource center for information regarding breadfruit.

As public awareness increases about the benefits of growing, eating, and conserving breadfruit, requests for guidance and data pour in from around the world. BFI has a well-managed, world-class conservation collection of more than 120 breadfruit cultivars, an active and dynamic research program, productive outreach and education efforts. Through a myriad of partnerships, we also are planting thousands of trees throughout the tropics.

BreadfruitInstitute

Among our many activities and achievements in 2015 are the following: More than 15,000 breadfruit trees have been sent to six countries, bringing the total breadfruit tree distribution since the launch of the Global Hunger Initiative in 2009 to 69,247 in 37 countries. Five countries (Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Dominica, Cameroon, and Sri Lanka) received breadfruit for the first time.

By the end of 2015, the Global Hunger Initiative, part of NTBG’s Breadfruit Institute, provided more than 65,000 breadfruit trees to 37 countries around the world in an effort to address food insecurity.

In BFI’s third year of our Plant a Tree of Life – Grow ‘Ulu project, we distributed nearly 2,200 trees in Hawai‘i and almost 4,000 trees to six countries in the Caribbean, Africa, and Micronesia. That’s more than 10,000 trees in Hawai‘i and over 6,000 given away internationally since 2012.

Efforts in conservation, horticulture and research are ongoing and making great progress. An in-depth analysis of NTBG’s breadfruit field-collection records, photo documentation, herbarium vouchers and archived records is helping us identify and verify hundreds of accessions.

At the Kahanu Garden on Maui where the bulk of Breadfruit Institute’s collection grows, a professional arborist pruned a number of the largest trees in order to improve their form and to clear space for a planned new visitor center.

Through our education and media outreach efforts, the Breadfruit Institute contributed

to a ”breadfruit vs. potato”public campaign organized by the Ho‘oulu ka ‘Ulu project that included well-attended events and a social media campaign that reached more than 185,000 people.

Dr. Diane Ragone, Director of the BFI, delivered the keynote address at the International Breadfruit Conference in Trinidad that was attended by over 100 participants from around the world. Throughout the year she and collaborators published articles in major scientific journals, which included the publication of her 100th paper.

Finally, in 2015 BFI Director Dr. Diane Ragone was recognized with awards and certificates from the University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and the U.S. House of Representatives and Hawai‘i Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

in nearly every aspect of the organization from our

programs and collaborations to our educational

public garden tours and interpretive displays. In

2015, nearly 3,000 people enriched themselves

by learning something at NTBG in one of more

than a dozen programs, classes, workshops, or

public lectures.

We believe people of all ages are naturally curious about plants and the environment and, given the chance, are eager to learn more. With five distinct gardens and preserves in Hawai‘i and Florida, our staff are able to teach a wide range of ages and knowledge levels in both formal and informal settings. NTBG has educational programs aimed at students K-12, college, and at post-graduate levels.

It is our goal that every single school child in our communities participates in at least one of our education programs. When provided with opportunities to explore and experience plants, science, and the natural world, young minds can expand limitlessly. Through our gardens and staff, we aim to teach, influence, and inspire every student possible with the hope that they will redefine their relationship with nature, making science and conservation an important part of their lives.

In 2015, we conducted our 13th Environmental Journalism Program in which we accepted professional science journalists for a week of

immersive environmental education. NTBG also regularly offers a Science Teachers Enrichment Program (in Hawai‘i and Florida), Garden as Classroom (in all gardens), Horticultural Internship (Hawai‘i), the Kūlia I Ka Pono program (Kahanu Garden), the Kupu internship (Hawai‘i), and an after-school program (Florida).

We also offer botanical illustration courses in Hawai‘i and Florida, and a fee-based program open to the public wherein amateur artists can train with professional botanical illustrators, learning how to turn botany into artistry.

As NTBG hosts students and educators from around the world, we work closely with our partners at the University of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i Community College, Kamehameha Schools, the Hawai‘i State Department of Education, Florida International University, Miami-Dade College, and educators in private and home-school programs. Through these, and other outreach efforts, virtually every department and staff member at NTBG has a role in facilitating and fulfilling the garden’s mission of education.

Through our Ka Mala project, we helped local school children learn about and experience traditional cultivation practices of Hawaiian sweet potatoes.

The south shore of Kaua‘i is home to NTBG’s McBryde Garden, the adjacent Allerton Garden, and the South Shore Visitors Center. In 2015, we invested time and effort into revamping our interpretive signage with 38 new signs, doubling the number in McBryde Garden in order to improve our visitors’ experiences. Attractive and informative, the new in-house designed signs include easy-to-follow maps, directional wayfinding signs, and infographic signs that identify and educate garden visitors.

Our Science and Conservation staff collaborated with our plant records and graphic design staff to make new plant identification signs aimed at visitors. The new laser-engraved anodized aluminum signs identify 188 key species using important markers like a plant’s scientific and common names, its native range, and multiple conservation status indicators. Similar signs were made for Kahanu Garden on Maui, with three large interpretive signs for the Kahanu Preserve also completed.

Allerton Garden remains as it was originally designed — without signs. Interpretation of the exquisitely landscaped Allerton Garden is offered by tour guides and docents.

In 2015, NTBG also contributed ten plant sign designs to the Botanical Gardens Conservation International “Care for the Rare” sign-sharing project.

By the end of 2015, our South Shore Gardens had welcomed

57,000 visitors (a nearly 17 percent increase over 2014).

In addition to our public tours, the South Shore Gardens were the

setting for four large community events: the ”Roots ‘n’ Shoots”

Fun Run, a Mother’s Day open house, and two Movie Nights in

the Garden. Proving to be exceptionally popular, a combined

1,300 members of the community enjoyed watching Jurassic

Park (in June) and Pirates of the Caribbean (in September).

NTBG’s South Shore infrastructure and facilities were significantly enhanced in 2015 with the largest project being the renovation and improvement of the South Shore Visitors Center. This included a major redesign of the center’s 1920s sugar plantation-era home, which doubled floor space for the gift shop and added a café, an outdoor dining patio, and a new tour departure/rest area.

Working with NTBG Trustee and internationally acclaimed architect Don Goo and other accomplished team members, construction began on September 21 and finished in time for a grand opening holiday craft fair on December 13, 2015, which welcomed more than 1,500.

Not only did the South Shore Visitor Center renovation create an exciting and attractive new space to welcome visitors before and after garden tours, it enhanced our ability to host events both public (festivals, concerts, craft fairs) and private (receptions, weddings).

In 2015, the South Shore Gardens hosted 18 weddings, photo shoots, and corporate events.

In 2015, the McBryde Garden saw continued improvements and additions to garden trails and connectors, creating a clearer, more comfortable, and safer way for visitors to navigate through the garden. Also in McBryde Garden, the Biodiversity Trail, which opened in 2014, continued to fill in as plantings matured, giving the trail a more established look. At the trail’s visitor drop off/pick up point, the ”Food For Thought“ area has evolved into a space where visitors can relax, connect (with free WiFi), and enjoy snacks and drinks from the snack shack alongside the trail.

Finally, in 2015 both McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden welcomed students and volunteers who took part in coastal conservation work at Lāwa‘i Kai (Allerton Garden), a sweet potato cultivation project (McBryde Garden), and other activities in both gardens.

As of 2015, 6,001 plants, or 80 percent of McBryde Garden’s living collections, have been mapped with new sophisticated mapping tools created to complete mapping efforts in Allerton Garden, Limahuli Garden, Kahanu Garden and The Kampong.

Serving as a model for native plant conservation and the preservation of ancient Hawaiian land management, Limahuli Garden and Preserve is having a profound impact in the local community and beyond. In 2015, the Visitor Program grew by 12 percent over the previous year.

We have a robust, full-spectrum education program that encompasses K-12 experiences, internships, and graduate student research, touching on all aspects of our work.

By playing a leading role in our community through various initiatives, we’ve seen a greater appreciation for the value of Limahuli and, along with it, increased local support. Meanwhile, we continue to be involved in the master planning process for Hā‘ena State Park and the rule-making process for Hawai‘i’s first designated Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Area efforts.

NTBG continues to play a leadership role in the Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance (HCA), a conglomeration of 24 governmental, educational, and non-profit organizations that together provide unified leadership and advocacy for Hawai‘i’s most critical conservation issues. In this vein we have situated the work we are doing in Limahuli, and our larger community of Hā‘ena, as one of the models of holistic, ridge-to-reef, community-based, and culturally aligned conservation efforts in the state. Ours is a model community in HCA’s Watershed Snapshot initiative.

We have completed the “Limahuli Comprehensive Conservation Strategy,” and it is now an official institutional document. The aim of this document is to bring all existing and potential conservation projects in the Limahuli Valley into alignment with the recently published, “Hawai’i Strategy for Plant Conservation,” and the latest recommendations from our national partners at the Center for Plant Conservation.

In Upper Limahuli Preserve we are having more success than ever before with both endangered plants and birds. As we continue to make new discoveries, we are increasing the conservation value of the preserve.

In Lower Limahuli Preserve we have completed the construction of an ungulate fence to protect

more than 60 acres of remnant forest and restored areas from feral pigs. Because of the collaborative, stakeholder-driven approach used to engage the community and design the fence line, ours is the first lowland ungulate fence in Hawai‘i to have 100 percent support from community hunters.

A major research project in which we are collaborating with ecologists from University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa explores how communities are adapting their resource management in the context of climate change. That project should be completed by the end of 2016. Results of the project are currently being analyzed and are expected to lead to several scientific publications.

In August 2015, NTBG hosted a workshop for some two dozen partners in conservation, during which they were trained to assess native Hawaiian plants for inclusion in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Situated between the rugged coast of east Maui and the towering Pi‘ilani Hale heiau – a National Historic Landmark – Kahanu Garden rewards visitors with an open, generous window into the world of Pacific island plants. An increasingly popular destination, in 2015 Kahanu Garden added Visitor Program staff to enrich the visitor experience with Hawaiian cultural demonstrations and education, while improving safety through tour-route maintenance and necessary monitoring of Kahanu Garden’s outstanding cultural feature: Pi‘lanihale heiau, an ancient archaeological site that towers over the Garden.

Despite its remote location, Kahanu Garden remains open to the public Monday through Saturday. These hours of operation have, in part contributed to our 2015 increase in visitors.

The annual Kūlia I Ka Pono Summer Enrichment Program in Hana was our largest education program in 2015, and is supported by Kamehameha Schools. In 2015, we received the highest reviews compared to all the other Kūlia programs that take place on the neighbor islands. The program served 150 ninth and tenth grade students, and successfully implemented the practices of leadership, aloha ‘āina (love for the land), critical thinking and teamwork. The program also

introduced students to tropical plant species, many of them rare and endangered, creating a greater appreciation and sense of caring for Hawai‘i’s precious resources.

Collaboration with Mahele Farm continues to diversify Polynesian crop cultivars of taro (Calocasia esculenta) and banana (Musa). We collaborate on long projects, and create a sense of community within the legendary land section of Honoma’ele, in which NTBG’s Maui lands are located. We collaborated on a well-attended taro and ‘awa symposium leading into the 2015 Taro Fest. Another event in September 2015 featured Kahanu Garden, Mahele Farm and the Sustainable and Organic Agriculture Program of the University of Hawai‘i sharing cultivation, composting, and cover crop techniques.

Significant progress has been made towards Kahanu Garden’s largest infrastructure improvement project .The Kahanu Garden Self Sufficiency Project, includes the construction of a new Visitor/Education Center and office building. The Visitor/Education Center and office building will be located near the entrance to Kahanu Garden. In addition to providing an information desk and interpretive exhibits for visitors, this flexible space will also provide a safe and dry area for our K-12 education programs. It will also provide a space for community meetings. At press time, over $468,000 of the $635,000 needed has been raised for the project. The planning and permit process is well underway and we expect to break ground before the end of 2016.

Kahanu Garden staff and community collaborators conducted the largest out-planting in the Preserve to date. Over 350 native plants were carefully selected for targeted ecosystem restoration in the pandanus forest adjacent to Pi‘ilanihale Heiau. To do this, we removed more than 4,000 pounds of invasive plant material that previously prevented pandanus trees from thriving in this legendary forest.

Descriptions of native and naturalized species in the Marquesas Islands were added to the Smithsonian Institution’s The Flora of the Marquesas website.

In 2015, The Kampong embarked on an ambitious restoration program for the estate, focusing on repair work for the main house. With support from the State of Florida Division of Historical Resources, Kampong Members and Fellows, and others, we were able make necessary repairs, and paint the whole house. Work was completed in November, prior to our Fall 2015 Board of Trustee meeting.

The next stage of work will focus on additional repairs to the house, establishing the Curator’s House as a teaching center, and the construction of a new horticulture facility on a plot adjacent to the main property.

Over the course of the 2015, The Kampong hosted a series of diverse cultural events. In November we partnered with the Telluride Mountain Film Festival for two nights of documentary films celebrating the beauty of the rainforest and examining the impact of illegal trade and climate change on threatened wildlife.

On February 6, The David Fairchild Medal for Plant Exploration was awarded to Kampong

Director Emeritus, Larry Schokman, in honor of his lifelong commitment to plant collecting and tropical horticulture. Schockman safeguarded and enriched the historic Fairchild plantings at The Kampong over his long career.

In 2015, we welcomed an experienced and well-respected horticulturist, Craig Morell, as our new Curator who very quickly began having a positive impact on the garden, following the horticultural improvements initiated by his predecessor.

In July, The Kampong hosted the Tropical Botany course, with students from the United States, Singapore, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. The Kampong alsohosted a week-long training program for Miami Dade high school teachers. The program was acollaboration among Dr. David Black of Groton School, Miami Dade County Public Schools, Florida International University (FIU) STEM Transformation Institute and FIU Teach. We also held our first summer camp in collaboration with FIU.

With more than a dozen education programs, school collaborations, and public lectures, NTBG welcomed students, educators, and profes-sionals of every age and background to learn in the garden.

Council of FellowsThe NTBG Council of Fellows was established in 1985 to involve the friends of the Garden in its development as a national resource. Fellows are invited to participate in the biannual Board of Trustees meetings, one held in Hawai‘i in the spring and the other in the fall on the U.S. mainland. Also, Fellows have the opportunity to participate in specialty international travel programs that include visits to private and public gardens.

Annual Fellows dues begin at the $1,500 level and continue up to the $20,000 Chairman’s Circle level with all revenue dedicated to Garden operations. Many Fellows become involved with the Garden’s special programs and projects. The Council of Fellows has been instrumental in helping NTBG become one of the most important tropical botanical gardens in the world. The following lists reflects all those who were active members of the Council of Fellows as of December 31, 2015. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of information and spelling, please notify our Department Office at 808-332-7324 of any errors.

You make all the difference! And there are so

many ways that you can help NTBG grow and

flourish. It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

1. Memberships! • Individual membership gifts support all of NTBG’s important work, while members enjoy

benefits such as free admission for self-guided tours, invitations to events, lectures, and workshops, discounts at Garden shops and our membership newsletter, The Bulletin.

• Council of Fellows is NTBG’s higher-level membership group Annual Fellows dues begin at the $1,500 level and continue up to the $20,000 Chairman’s Circle level. Fellows are invited to participate in the bi-annual Board of Trustees meetings, one held in Hawai‘i in the spring and the other in the fall on the U.S. mainland. Also, Fellows have the opportunity to participate in specially arranged international travel programs that include visits to private and public gardens.

• Matching Gifts from your workplace can double, or even triple, the value of your contribution. Many businesses provide matching funds to increase your support. Please contact your company’s human resources department for information.

• Corporate Partnership Program is a way for businesses of all sizes to become members and support NTBG. Companies enjoy a wide range of benefits for their employees, clients and executive team, such as special tours and presentations, discounts on facility rentals and memberships, group volunteer opportunities and more.

2. Donate! • Annual Fund donations provide essential support for all of NTBG’s programs in Conservation,

Science, Living Collections and Education. To make a contribution, please contact Suzy May, Assistant Director of Philanthropy, at 808-332-7324, Ext. 235, or [email protected]

• Planned Gifts to the Garden made through your will, a charitable trust, a gift of life insurance, or other vehicles help ensure the future of the gardens and programs, and may further your financial goals. To discuss a planned gift, please contact Heidi Whitman CFRE, Director of Philanthropy, at (808) 320-0748 or [email protected].

3. Volunteer! • Becoming a Volunteer is easy! Simply contact one of our locations or email our central

office at [email protected]. Staff will match your interests, abilities, and availability with the Garden’s current volunteer needs. By becoming a volunteer you will be making a substantial contribution to preservation and knowledge of tropical plants and ecosystems. For a detailed list of volunteer opportunities, visit http://ntbg.org/donate/volunteer.php
