It is our honour and pleasure to invite you to participate in the seminar on “Indigenous Techniques in Psychotherapy: Concept and Applications” Organized by the Department of Clinical Psychology, School of Yoga and Health, Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar-249411 on 25, 26 & 27 March, 2011. We sincerely hope that you will make it a point to attend the seminar and take active part by presenting your paper(s) and by participating in deliberations.

About The Seminar:

Western Psychotherapeutic techniques are widely used to deal with the common psychological disorders. For a long time, we practiced the currently available modern psychological methods to treat the psychological conditions in India. However, in recent years, our clinical experiences made us aware that the use of such techniques could not be justified for all patients of Indian origin. Similarly, it is not entirely effective in achieving the goals of the treatment. In this context, we also approached many well known and acclaimed Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists in India, who also seem to agree with this perception.

In India, we believe that cultural and social structure of a family is markedly different from other cultures. Therefore, it is very difficult to apply the conventional psychotherapeutic techniques for people of Indian

origin, who suffer from psychological disorders. This deserves a mention that the Indian patients, unlike their counter parts in west, have different characteristics in their personality development, such as philosophical and religious beliefs, rebirth, karma theory, fatalism, transmigration of soul, family structure, socio-cultural set up etc. We also know that the personality is the product of interaction of culture, society, family structure and their interpersonal relationships. Hence, we need to develop the indigenous techniques in psychotherapy based on the cultural and social values of India.

These days' psychologists and psychiatrists are working out various indigenous interventions and strategies to treat the psychological disorders and to enhance overall health of an individual. Considering the need and significance of indigenous techniques in psychotherapy and in mental health domain, the Department of Clinical Psychology, School of Yoga and Health, Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar is organizing this National Seminar with the objective to collect, assimilate and apply researches conducted in this area in various parts of the country and use it for the benefit of the society.

Objectives:

• To invite Psychologists, Psychiatrists and other Mental Health Professionals to a common forum.

• To examine Concept, Significance and Applications of major Indigenous Techniques in Psychotherapy.

• To devise effective Indigenous Techniques in Psychotherapy. • To facilitate New Research.• To open the new dimension of Research Project and Experiments.• To fabricate new dimensions of Psychotherapy.• To identify Major Research agenda for future.

Sub Themes:

In order to fulfill these objectives, a critical sample of sub-themes has been suggested. However, scholars have the freedom of going beyond the listed sub-theme and plan a thematic presentation of his / her area of research.

Note: The papers based on Exploratory Study / Empirical Study / Review Based Study / Conceptual Study / Critical Study are invited.

An Outlook of Abstract \ Paper :

An abstract of papers maximum of 250 words is to be submitted via e-mail or post. The abstract of the full paper should include Title, Author(s) name, Designation, Objectives, Hypothesis, Method, Sample, Tools, Very Brief Procedure and Conclusion. Abstract will be printed in the souvenir, only after confirming the participation, with registration before 15 March, 2011.

A paper can be presented on any topic related to the theme/ sub themes of the Seminar. The paper should be typed in Times New Roman, font size 12 with double spacing, on A4 size paper in APA format (6th edition). Soft copy should be sent to the Organizing Secretary along with a hard copy as per following deadlines.

Department Profile:

The Department of Clinical Psychology was started in the year 2002. The department is engaged in teaching, clinical service, training and research activities. The department has a sanctioned strength of faculty members that includes academicians, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counselors, research scholars and lab technicians. The faculty also provides training to postgraduates of other departments in the institute. The department offers short-term observer / training programs in various specialty areas such as child and adolescent mental health, neuropsychology, family therapy and behavioral medicine for individuals already working in the respective fields. In addition, workshops and other programs for continuing professional development are periodically organized by the department.

The department also runs a psychology clinic named as Psychological Disorders Services. The department offers comprehensive and integrated psychological services for children, adolescent and adults. Psychological assessment services span the following areas: Diagnostic clarification, assessment of personality, intrapsychic and interpersonal factors contributing to the development and maintenance of psychological problems. This clinic is unique and different in many perspectives from other professional mental health institutes. In the treatment setting we also offer psychiatric treatment, psychotherapy along with the ancient Indian spiritual therapies.

Venue:The venue is Main Auditorium, Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya Campus, which is approximately 8 km away from the city of Haridwar on Haridwar-Rishikesh road.

• A “manmaking” university based on the tenants of Indian Culture as envisaged by Pujya Gurudev Pt. Shriram Sharma Acharya, the founder of Shantikunj, Haridwar.

• Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar is situated on the bank of Holy River Ganges and in the lap of sacred Himalayan region.

• Established by the Act of Uttaranchal Government 04, 2002 and duly recognized by the University Grant Commission (UGC).

• It is self –financed through people's contribution and not by any grant from the State or the Central Government or UGC.

• The students undergo internship program for three month after the completion of their studies and contribute their time to social development.

Note :Please note that the student rates are only applicable to participants who will have full-future student status on 01 January 2011. A letter verifying this status must accompany all registration forms. Letters must be signed by either a Supervisor or Head of Department. If you register via the website, a letter verifying student status must be sent as hard copy to the Organizing secretary and must be carried in person and presented at the time of collecting the registration kit.

Accompanying Guests must be registered using the appropriate space on the registration form. Please provide full names of the guests, as all guests will be issued a badge for entry to the Welcome Reception. Please note that entry is not permitted to the Seminar sessions for Accompanying Guests, however, guests can be accommodated into residential facility at an additional cost of Rs. 100/- per night.

Payments can be made through Demand Draft or a cheque for the appropriate amount in favour of “Registrar DSVV”, payable at Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India.

The registration will be confirmed by the Seminar Organizing Committee through a confirmation receipt by email or by post.

Smoking Policy

Accommodation for the residential delegates will be arranged on request in the University Campus. The campus ambience is highly spiritual in which only Indian vegetarian food is served.

The city hotels are busy due to tourists. Therefore, the delegates are advised to reserve the accommodation well in advance. The hotel reservation and its payment is the sole responsibility of the delegate. The contact details of the hotels, which are located near the venue, can be forwarded to the delegates on request.

Note: All hotels have their own cancellation policy and terms of payment / refund. Please contact hotels directly to get this information. Accommodation to the wishing delegates will be provided on limited basis in Shantikunj.

All meeting rooms are non-smoking areas. The DSVV also follows strictly non-alcoholic and vegetarian policy

The participants are requested to make their own travel arrangement.

By Air: Domestic Airline connects the main cities of India to Deharadun (Jolly Grant Air Port), which is 20 km. north of Haridwar. From Dehradun to Haridwar, trains and buses are available frequently. Taxis can be arranged on request to pick up from the airport.

By Train: Direct trains are available from all the main cities of India to Haridwar. Delhi is connected daily by two Shatabdi and one Rajdhani Express trains to Haridwar.

By Bus: Fast bus services are available from all main cities of north India to Haridwar.

By Taxi: You can hire taxis from Delhi to Haridwar. (Approximately charges Rs.2500-2800)

About The City :

The holy Ganges starts a new phase of life as a sedate plain river from the city of Haridwar. Haridwar is regarded as one of the seven holiest places of Hindus. In Hindu traditions, the 'Panch Tirth' (Five Pilgrimages) within Haridwar, are Gangadwara (Har ki Pauri), Kushwart (Ghat in Kankhal), Bilwa Teerth (Mansa Devi Temple) and Neel Parvat (Chandi Devi Temple).

The city has the Headquarters of All World Gayatri Pariwar. Millions of devotees visit every year to this spiritual Sanctuary to be part of the movement initiated by Pujya Gurudev Pt. Shri Ram Sharma Acharya Ji for social transformation.

Average temperature for Haridwar is 25°C in March. The days are usually sunny and pleasant, however we advise participants to bring some clothing for both extremes in this era of global change in weather. (Minimum average temperature from April to Oct. 20°C and maximum average 30 °C. Minimum average temperature from Nov. to March 10°C and maximum average 25°C.)
