NATIONAL POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY | TUESDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2020

This year, Victoria Police recognises and remembers four police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while on duty.

The service and legacy of Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Joshua Prestney

will forever be honoured with their place on the Police Memorial Honour Wall.

POLICE MEMORIAL HONOUR WALL 2020

Age: 60

Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor had a distinguished 31-year career with Victoria Police,

joining in January 1989 and graduating in May of that year.

Along with Senior Constable Kevin King, Constable Glen Humphris and Constable Josh Prestney, Leading Senior Constable Taylor lost her life on 22 April 2020 while performing road policing duties on the Eastern Freeway at Kew.

Early in her career, Leading Senior Constable Taylor quickly progressed from general duties policing to traffic and road policing roles and had worked at the Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section (RPDAS) Operations Unit since 2011.

Leading Senior Constable Claire McMorron worked side by side with Leading Senior Constable Taylor for the best part of the last decade and was always calmed by her colleague’s positive energy.

“When Lyn came into the room, she would just brighten my day. I knew my day would be better with her around,” Leading Senior Constable McMorron said.

LEADING SENIOR CONSTABLE LYNETTE TAYLOR

Leading Senior Constable Taylor’s caring nature came to the fore when she mentored and guided Victoria Police’s newest recruits when they arrived at RPDAS for their first operational duties.

“She was always there to help the constables, to help them with their paperwork and whatever else. They come straight to us from the Academy and they’re often nervous, but Lyn would walk them through everything,” Leading Senior Constable McMorron said.

Leading Senior Constable Taylor had a reputation of going in to bat for others and challenging decisions that she believed were unfair.

During her career, Leading Senior Constable Taylor was recognised by the Chief Commissioner for good work while performing duties at the Traffic Camera Office and was the recipient of the National Medal first clasp – 25 years, National Police Service Medal and the Victoria Police Service Medal fourth clasp – 30 years.

Leading Senior Constable Taylor is survived by her husband, former Victoria Police officer Stuart Schulze, and their two sons, Nathan and Alexander.

POLICE MEMORIAL HONOUR WALL 2020

Age: 32

Constable Glen Humphris moved from New South Wales to Victoria and began his policing career

in 2019, graduating from the Academy in March 2020.

Only weeks later, while on a training placement at the Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section, Constable Humphris died in the line of duty.

He and three colleagues – Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Josh Prestney – were killed in a tragic incident on the Eastern Freeway at Kew.

Constable Humphris’ potential as a police officer shone through during his time at the Academy.

His results in both examinations and assessments were well above average and he narrowly missed out on the Highest Academic Achiever Award for his squad.

While training at the Academy, Constable Humphris completed placements at South Melbourne and Melbourne East police stations.

CONSTABLE GLEN HUMPHRIS

Constable Humphris was known for his caring personality, a trait remembered fondly by his colleagues at the Academy.

His squad mates said he genuinely wanted to help people, had a great sense of community and showed empathy to everyone – victims and offenders alike.

For Constable Jessie George, she knew from her first conversation with Constable Humphris why he wanted to be a police officer.

“It was evident straight away that he was in it to help people,” she said.

“Some people get into the job to catch crooks or for a career change, but Glen just wanted to help.

“He saw lots of different people go through lots of different and difficult things in their lives and he wanted to make a difference.

“Even though he didn’t spend long in the job, I have no doubt in my mind that he was an amazing copper and he would’ve gone on to do amazing things.”

Constable Humphris is survived by his partner Todd Robinson, his parents Katie Tyson and Mark Humphris, and older brother Wade Humphris.

POLICE MEMORIAL HONOUR WALL 2020

Age: 50

Senior Constable Kevin King joined Victoria Police in 2014, having joined later in life,

entering the Academy in his mid-forties.

On 22 April 2020, Senior Constable King lost his life in a tragic incident while he was performing road policing duties on the Eastern Freeway at Kew.

The incident also took the lives of fellow officers Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris and Constable Josh Prestney.

Senior Constable King spent six years working at various stations in Melbourne and during this time he displayed high levels of professionalism and personal commitment to policing.

This was evidenced by a divisional commendation he received on 30 October 2018, of which he was immensely proud.

This commendation was awarded to Senior Constable King for his role in responding to a balcony collapse with multiple civilian fatalities and injuries in December 2017.

In 2018, Senior Constable King took the next step in his career and transferred to Nunawading Highway Patrol.

SENIOR CONSTABLE KEVIN KING

He was passionate about road policing and knew it was about more than just giving out tickets.

Officer in Charge of Nunawading Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Bradford Peters said Senior Constable King used his maturity to his advantage when on patrol.

“Kevin was an older head with a lot of life experience. He always made good judgement calls and decisions,” Senior Sergeant Peters said.

“He was a terrific bloke. A lovely, all-round good bloke who took to road policing immediately. He would do anything in his power to not let you down.

“He always just wanted to laugh, have a good time, and talk about footy. It’s just devastating to lose a bloke like that.”

Senior Constable King thrived on serving the community and helping others brought him true richness and reward. He was in his element and at his best as part of a team and was fiercely loyal and devoted to a worthwhile cause.

The 50-year-old father of three was well liked and respected by his colleagues. He had a great sense of humour, loved coming to work, and he loved what he did.

Senior Constable King is survived by his wife Sharron Mackenzie, and their three children, James, William and Henry.

Age: 28

Constable Josh Prestney started his career with Victoria Police in 2019, joining in May that year.

Constable Prestney graduated from the Academy in December 2019, where his brother, First Constable Alex Prestney, presented him with his badge.

His life was tragically cut short when he and three of his colleagues – Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Glen Humphris – were killed in an incident while performing road policing duties on the Eastern Freeway at Kew on 22 April 2020.

During his time in the job, the 28-year-old had displayed a natural aptitude for policing.

At the time of his death, Constable Prestney was stationed at Boroondara Police Station and Leading Senior Constable Phil Davis was one of the team showing him the ropes.

CONSTABLE JOSHUA PRESTNEY

Leading Senior Constable Davis saw a bright future for his younger offsider.

“We worked the van together and I could tell he was so keen to learn,” Leading Senior Constable Davis said.

“I’d taught him how to do vehicle intercepts, and he just absorbed it. He was methodical, he was cluey, he would make a really good detective.”

Constable Prestney’s colleagues say they will always remember the profound impact he left on them and will honour his memory by continuing the police work he was so passionate about.

“Josh, you were and always will be a brother in blue,” Constable Ty Christy said.

“You make me proud to be a police officer and were an incredible man. I’ll miss your cheeky smile and your one-liners.”

Constable Prestney is survived by his parents Andrew and Belinda, and his brother, First Constable Alex Prestney.

FAMILY REFLECTION

WORDS OF MEDITATION

Reverend Jim Jung

Almighty God, this National Police Remembrance Day we ask for ongoing healing and hope to be extended to the families of those who tragically lost their lives

whilst serving our community over the past 12 months.

We ask that you comfort and sustain all police officers throughout Australia and the South West Pacific who give so much of themselves for the safety and

protection of our society. Help them as they work for the betterment of our community, protect and shield them from harm and support them in times of stress and danger.

Renew their resolve, sustain their spirits, protect and encourage them, uplift them in times of doubt, anxiety and pain, restore their energies

when faced with so many demands. We ask you bless all Victoria Police officers, both those who are currently serving and those amongst our veteran community.

May they know our appreciation, our faith and our hope for them, their families, friends and colleagues. Grant them good health, fulfilment and enjoyment of life.

And may we as a community care for and support them in their endeavours.

Amen.

TRUE BLESSINGS Blessed are they who know their spiritual poverty, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

POLICE ODE

Read by Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy

As the sun surely sets: Dawn will see it arise, For service, above self, Demands its own prize.

You have fought the good fight: Life’s race has been run, And peace, your reward,

For eternity begun.

And we that are left, Shall never forget,

Rest in peace friend and colleague For the sun has now set.

Join in saying –

We will remember. We will remember. Hasten the dawn.

Please remain standing for the Australian National Anthem.

Australians all let us rejoice,

For we are young and free;

We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;

Our home is girt by sea;

Our land abounds in nature’s gifts

Of beauty rich and rare;

In history’s page, let every stage

Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,

Advance Australia Fair.

Please be seated.

The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation was formed in 1988 to perpetuate the memory of Victoria Police employees who died in the line of duty.

This work is carried out in partnership with the wider community and aims to establish living memorials to honour fallen police employees, through hospitals and other community projects.

Our program of ‘remembering lives by saving others’ has already funded 58 new and improved emergency facilities across the state and we often purchase additional equipment for these units so they can maintain their high standards of patient care.

Throughout the year the public join us to honour all serving police officers and employees who work to ensure peace, safety and good order in our communities and especially on Blue Ribbon Day, when the community comes together in remembrance of those who paid a price beyond measure.

The symbolic blue ribbon, that now comes in various forms, remembers the heroic actions of the police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty, but also gives us a very visible opportunity to simply say ‘thank you’ on one special day each year to the Victoria Police officers who serve our community so very well.
