The Oorlogskloof River flowsat the foot of deeply dissected,wide-valleyed gorges whichgive this reserve its name.Mountains clothed in montanefynbos are capped with sharpescarpment edges – a territorythat offers experienced hikerscliffs, rock chimneys, erodedplateaus and sculpted sand-

stone. Ladders and ropes aid hikers in relevant spots. Some of thetrails, ranging from day walks to 7-day hikes, involve sharp descents tothe river and corresponding ascents up to the cliffs. Needless to say, views from the top are marvellous. A treat are cooling springs and theBushman rock paintings.

Akkerendam Nature Reserve sprawls across the semi-arid slopesof the Hantamsberg and around the Karee dam. Primarily a bird sanctuary, keen birders are drawn to its wild terrain to track hosts offeathered friends. The claim has been made that over two days, it’spossible for twitchers to have ticked off 65 different species in theirbirding notebooks.

This park draws on the alluvial diamond diggings near Kimberley for its character – and adjacent to it isthe historic mining village, Sydney-on-Vaal, still with many of its original Victorian buildings intact.Within the park, a tourist route has been developed using material from the diamond diggings. Alsounique is the merging of three different ecosystems – the Savannah Grassveld, Kalahari and Karoo biomes – in a single park. The terrain is mainly Kalahari, but look for a crossover between Grassveld and Karoo in the Gras-Holpan sector. The park is named after the most commonly occurring tree, theVaalbos, or Camphor Bush. The picnic and barbecue sites lining the Vaal River and Block dam (Blokdam)are an attractive feature.

Vaalbos National Park

Consisting mainly of Kalahari desert-like sandy flats interrupted by two rocky outcrops, this reserve’sname derives from the prominent rocky koppie near the entrance. Its plains are ideal for game-viewing,and this desert territory is just perfect for the enigmatic Gemsbok. Let yourself be entertained by thenimble Suricates and keep a watch out for puff adders and Cape Cobras. The dormant seeds of springdaisies erupt into their dazzling hues here between August and October. Hikers can observe the wildlifeand scenery on foot, staying in an overnight hut if they choose. Picnic spots nestle at the base ofSpitskop’s granite hill and a telescope can be found at the sheltered viewpoint.

Addo was established in the thick valley bushveld surrounding the Sundays River and the Zuurbergmountains to save the last remaining 11 Elephants from overzealous hunters. This successful

measure has raised numbers to over 350 today. The gene pool of Addo National Park’s elephantsdiffers from any other in the country – believed to be as a result of selective shooting here in the 19thcentury. Elephant bulls carry small tusks, and most cows are tuskless. Buffalo, too, were forced byhunters to seek refuge in Addo’s bushveld, where they turned to nocturnal browsing instead of grazing in the grasslands during the day. The park is dominated by the Spekboom.

The Woody Cape Nature Reserve has newly been incorporated into the Greater Addo NationalPark. Its three-in-one combination of ecosystems – forest, coastal dunefields and seashore – meanthat only the Succulent Karoo biome is missing from the Addo preserve, making it one of the mostdiverse conservation areas in the world. The Alexandria dunes, with sharply defined slipfaces, stretchfor 50km northward of Algoa Bay and provide an exciting interlude on Addo’s Alexandria 2-day hikingtrail. Also here are fossil dune ridges marking previous shorelines going back a few million years. Lookout for whales and dolphins from the high tops of the dune cliffs.

The Groendal Wilderness Area lies within the Groot Winterhoek mountain range, embracing theSwartkops (KwaZungha) River and the Groendal dam at its centre. Kept in its natural state and suffer-ing little impact from farming, hunting and commercialisation, it’s a true wilderness in which layers of undulating, green-mantled mountain saddles fade into the far distance. Hikers testing out an arrayof 4–5-day trails will encounter fynbos and isolated pockets of indigenous forest in the ravines; theycould also startle a small antelope or two.

This must be one of the mostgorgeous parcels of wildernessin the land – mountain slopesand deep ravines thick withindigenous trees, restlesswaves hissing over a crackedrocky coastline, and sensitivelydesigned log cabins tuckedinto ancient milkwood trees ashort wave’s length from the

ocean. In the Khoi-San tongue this is “the place of much water”. Theydo have a way with words. Most rewarding in this naturalist haven aremultiple trails with descriptive names, the longest one – the Otter Trail– needing no introduction.

Latest addition to the Tsitsikamma National Park is a wild, spectac-ular skyline of unruly jagged peaks separated by the deep-valleyed,meandering Palmiet River – this is Soetkraal. This wilderness tractstraddles the Tsitsikamma mountain range between Plettenberg Bayand Misgund in the Langkloof. It is the site of a mesmerising 4x4 trailthat climbs and drops, twists and meanders, then ends with campingunder the stars.

This reserve has a little ofeverything: it cradles thecharming town of Graaff-Reinet which, with its 200+national monument buildings, retains a 19th-century air; theNqewba dam accommodatesboats, skiers and shriekingwater enthusiasts as well asanglers and birders; wildlife

viewing serves up Buffalo, wildebeest and more than a handful ofantelope species; and the scenery is staggering, from the Drie Koppe –Lesotho hatlike koppies rising from vast flat plains – to the craggy cliffsof the Valley of Desolation. From view sites visitors can marvel at thespectacle, where, 180 million years ago, molten rock pushed throughcracks and fissures of sandstone and shale, cooling to form dolerite. As the sedimentary layers eroded, the dolerite resisted, leaving today’s cracked and shattered pillars, pinnacles, buttresses and finelybalanced boulders.

This well-watered park, whichhas the Wilgebooms River run-ning right through the centre,is bounded to one side by theBankberg’s round-toppeddolerite hills – defining featureof the Karoo – and a highridge that merges into theRooiplaat Plateau. It is thusscenically very pretty besides

the appeal of its Cape Mountain Zebra population, which in 1937 wasteetering on the brink of extinction. The black stripes of this speciesare narrower than those of Burchell’s (plains) Zebra and they stop shortof the belly, leaving it white. Their hides also don’t feature the grey-shadow stripes of the Burchell’s. Each zebra’s stripes, like fingerprints, never match up to any other individual’s stripe pattern and even differon each side of the body. Cape Mountain Zebra prefer the highergrasslands of the plateaus and in winter they are proactive in movingup to mountain slopes and ravines to find grazing.

The coastline, travelling north-wards from East London up tothe Transkei’s Kei River mouth,is known as the StrandloperCoast. Here, over 400 yearsago, Khoi and Gonaquahunter-gatherers trawled theshoreline, harvesting musselsand other shellfish, leavingbehind them today’s high

dunes – the remains of their Strandloper middens. Strung along theseshores, the Gulu, Kwelera and Cape Henderson nature reserves allare part of the 60km, 5-day Strandloper Trail which crosses remote,wave-washed beaches, fords river mouths and ducks into remnants ofprotected indigenous forest. These three reserves, together withUmtiza and Fort Pato further inland, are part of a concerted effort topreserve the country’s threatened forest patches. Fort Pato’s forest fallsinto the Amatole Mist-belt biome, while Umtiza’s wooded confineshide Samango Monkeys, rarely seen in South Africa. These reserves arethe domain of birdwatchers (Umtiza is known for the gorgeous NarinaTrogon), beach anglers and day-picknickers.

Three reserves, AndriesVosloo Kudu, Sam Knott andDoubledrift, are linked via acircular touring and wildlife-viewing route and all make upthe Great Fish River ReserveComplex. In the past, thisregion witnessed terrible toiland strife between the earlySettlers and the Xhosa clans,

particularly as the Great Fish River often acted as a boundary betweenthe conflicting territories. Evidence remains in the form of ruined oldforts, signalling towers, farmsteads and graves. The tangled valleybushveld is wild and pristine. Kudu are a feature of Andries Vosloo, and in Doubledrift the Great Fish and Kat rivers converge, providing aperfect habitat for hippo to territorially lurk. If you encounter them onland, make sure never to get between them and the water! The luxurylodges in the reserve are onetime homes of the famous Knott family;Mvubu Lodge, on the riverbank, is built of natural materials.
