Searching the Missing Persons Database
To perform a search for a missing person in the NamUs database, you can use either the Quick Search function on the homepage, or the Advanced Search function to enter more specific information and narrow your results.
Note: You do not have to register with the NamUs system to conduct a search for a missing person.
Using the Quick Search
Simply enter the name, gender and state where the person was last seen into the Quick Search fields on the homepage and press ‘Find’.
National Missing Persons Data System User’s Guide 4
The NamUs system will return the records that most closely match your search.
Quick Search Results
If your search returns more than six records, click on the highlighted arrow above the upper right corner of the match window to display the next page of records.
Using the Advanced Search If you have more detailed information about the person who is missing, you can target your search by using the Advanced Search function.
To create a custom Advanced Search, follow these steps:
1. Position your cursor over the Search button and click on New Search. This will display the Advanced Search screen.
Click the right arrow to display the next page of records that match your search.
Click ‘New Search’ to view the Advanced Search screen.

2. Click on the left drop‐down menu to add fields such as physical characteristics and personal information to your search. For example, to search for someone who has brown hair, select Physical Characteristics in the left drop‐down menu, then select Hair Color in the right drop‐down menu. Then click ‘Add Field.’
3. Continue to add fields to your search by clicking on the left and right drop‐down menus and clicking ‘Add Field’. In the example above, the search will retrieve all missing persons in the NamUs system who have Brown hair, wear Braces, and drive a Ford.

4. When you are finished adding your fields, click ‘Search’ to search the database for all records matching your criteria.
Registering as a User with NamUs
To enter a case into the NamUs system, you must first register as either a Public User, a Law Enforcement professional, or a Case Manager.
To start your registration, click ‘Register’ on the left side of the homepage in the Member Login section.
Before proceeding, please confirm that you have enough information to complete a missing persons profile on NamUs. A National Crime Information Center (NCIC) number must be in place before the case is displayed on the NamUs system. This is
National Missing Persons Data System User’s Guide 7
the official law enforcement tracking number for a missing persons report and can be obtained through a local law enforcement or FBI office.
You must be able to provide the following details about the missing individual:
NCIC # First Name • Last Name • Age • Sex • Race • Height • Weight
• City • State • Circumstances • Hair Color • Eye Color • Date Last Known Alive (LKA)
PLEASE NOTE: If you want to file a crime report or complaint that is not explicitly a case, please contact your local law enforcement agency. If you want to report an incident wherein a person is injured, threatened, or otherwise placed in danger, you should immediately call 9‐1‐1.
Press ‘Continue’ to proceed with the registration process.
National Missing Persons Data System User’s Guide 8
Complete the New User Registration screen by entering your name and contact information. The ‘Public E‐mail’ field refers to an e‐mail address that will be visible to all users of the NamUs system.
Select the user type that most closely matches your profile:
• Public User – Members of the general public should choose this type.
• Law Enforcement – Police officers, missing persons commanders and other law enforcement officers. Registering as a Law Enforcement user will give you the capability to enter sensitive case information.
• Case Manager – This user type is designed for members of state missing persons clearinghouses and other authorized individuals. Selecting this user type will give you the capability to approve cases and manage user lists.
• Regional System Administrator – If you are a coordinator of case managers within the NamUs system, select this type. Once approved, you will have the capability to assign cases to specific case managers.
Select a secret question that can be used to confirm your identity in case you forget your password. Enter the answer to your question in the space provided.
Enter an e‐mail address where you wish to be contacted, and confirm the e‐mail address by re‐typing it in the field below. (This can be the same e‐mail address as you entered in the ‘Public E‐mail’ field.)
To help spread the word about the NamUs system, please share how you heard about NamUs.
Finally, if you are registering as a non‐public user, you will be asked to provide the name and e‐mail address of your Chief Administrator (e.g., Chief, Sheriff, Medical Examiner, Director, etc.) so that NamUs can confirm your registration.
National Missing Persons Data System User’s Guide 9
Click ‘Continue’ to submit your form. On the next page, please review the NamUs system policies. Scroll to the end, click on ‘Accept’ and then click on the ‘Register’ button to complete your registration.
Note: All users registering as a Law Enforcement Officer, Case Manager, or Regional System Administrator will be verified by NamUs support staff prior to becoming active in the system. This process may take several business days to complete. However, you will be sent your username/password via email immediately so that you can begin entering cases into the system. Once your registration is verified, you will receive an approval email from NamUs and you will be granted access to all the system functions available to your user type.
Entering a Case
The National Missing Persons Data System empowers members of the justice community and the general public to enter missing persons cases into a central, national database. When completing your report, please include any details and information that may help an investigator conduct a search.
Please Note: To ensure privacy of the most sensitive case data, some of the information you enter into the system will only be viewable by case managers and law enforcement professionals who have registered with NamUs. For a list of data fields that are viewable by the general public, see Appendix A, “Data Elements and View/Edit Permissions”.
To enter a new case into the NamUs system, click ‘New Case’ in the toolbar at the top of the homepage (this function will only appear if you have registered as a user with NamUs); the Case Information screen will appear.
Complete this form by entering as much information about the missing person as you know, including: name, date of birth, NCIC number (if the case has been reported to the FBI), the date and

5‐Star Rating System To help users gauge the completeness of their missing persons report information and to encourage entry of the highest quality data, the NamUs system rates each profile using a five‐star system. The number of stars increases as the case information becomes more useful for finding a missing person. The following criteria are used to create the report’s rating:
National Missing Persons Data System User’s Guide 24
1 Star The report includes basic information such as age, race, sex, height and weight, date of birth, a case number, and the county and state where the person was last seen.
2 Stars The report contains information on distinctive bodily features such as scars, marks, and tattoos, or distinctive clothing, footwear, eyewear, or jewelry.
3 Stars A fingerprint classification or fingerprint card has been entered/uploaded, AND/OR information has been entered into at least one of the tooth boxes on the dental chart page, AND/OR a facial photo or artist’s rendering has been uploaded.
4 Stars Same as 3 Stars except that a mitochondrial OR nuclear DNA profile has been established.
5 Stars A facial photo or rendering has been uploaded, fingerprint
