    As Mayor of the District of Columbia, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all of therunners, supporters, and volunteers who have joined us in Washington, D.C. to participate in the2011 SunTrust National Marathon, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield National Half Marathon,and United Way National Team Relay.

    The course will not only feature the monuments, museums, and institutes of higher learning thatwe are famous for, but also the neighborhoods and diversity that make this city so unique. Spe-cial thanks are due to the Greater Washington Sports Alliance for giving our beloved communitya front row seat to this event. For those of you traveling to the District of Columbia for this raceweekend, I hope that you will take the time to discover all that makes our city a great place tolive, work, and visit by exploring our vibrant neighborhoods.

    The Greater Washington Sports Alliance is excitedto welcome you to the 6th annual SunTrustNational Marathon, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield National Half Marathon and UnitedWayNational Team Relay. The Sports Alliance exists to initiate and support efforts to attract premiersporting events to our region. We are honored to be partnered with SunTrust Bank, CareFirstBlueCross BlueShield and United Way in order to bringyou todays event.

    With the backdrop of historic Washington, D.C., a carefully designed route, and an experiencedrace team, we look forward to another successful weekend of events. Our team wishes toexpress our appreciation to the tens of thousands of runners, spectators, and volunteers thatchoose to join us each and every year. Without your dedication and support, this weekend ofactivities would not be possible.

    Proceeds from the 2011 SunTrust National Marathon, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield NationalHalf Marathon and UnitedWay National Team Relay will benefit the Greater Washington SportsCollaborative. Themission of our Sports Collaborative is to empower our youth by develop-ing and supporting community based programs that use sports to promote health, educationand character. We are dedicated to closing the gap on childhood obesity, supporting academic

    achievement, and promoting character development by making strategic investments directly inboth sports and fitness programs and emerging non-profits that sharea sports-focused mission.

    Thank you to everyone who has been a part of makingthis event such asuccess. The months of preparation and hundreds of volunteer hours all serve to make thisevent possible.     CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) is pleased to join with the Greater Washington

    Sports Alliance to present the 2011 National Half Marathon. As the largest health insurer

    in the metropolitan Washington area and the region, a central part of CareFirsts mission

    is investing in our community in ways that positively affect the health of individuals and

    families in our service area. The time and energy which runners, their families, and

    organizers have committed in preparing for this day is evidence of a strong commitment

    to improving the communitys health and wellness. CareFirst is honored to be associated

    with such a driven group of individuals.

    Each year, this race continues to grow in both size and prestige. We extend a warm

    welcome to the record number of runners who will experience the rich history of ournation and city as they pass through Washingtons neighborhoods, and by the citys sites

    and monuments. We also hope that all who attend this weekends festivities will pay

    a visit to the CareFirst booth located at the National Health & Fitness Expo in the D.C.

    Armory on Friday, March 25th and the CareFirst tent located at the Finish Line Festival

    immediately following the race on March 26th.
