From November 2014 – (Schedule of this winter)

1. Atmospheric science

2 researchers, 8-12 November 3442 Greenhouse gas observation at Ny-Ålesund 10027 In-situ measurements of the atmospheric greenhouse gases at Ny-Ålesund

1 researcher, 10-14 November 6443 A preliminary study for ground validation of EarthCARE products at the polar sites 1 researcher, 22-29 December 6420 Observational study on effects of Arctic Haze on ice cloud formation

1 researcher, 5-23 January 6955 Observational study on the volatility of aerosol in the arctic winter upper troposphere and lower stratosphere

2. Upper atmospheric science 4 researchers, 14-17 November 10084 C-REX Sounding Rocket Mission This project will photograph from several locations on Svalbard the wind-driven motion of tracer clouds deployed from a sounding rocket into the upper atmosphere at 150 to 400 km altitude above the Greenland Sea. The objective is to understand why the upper atmosphere has a persistent density enhancement in this region.

Earth CARE: Earth Clouds, Aerosols, and Radiation Explorer

EarthCARE is an earth observation satellite that Japan and Europe have been jointly developing. Using its four sensors (Cloud Profiling Radar, Backscatter Lidar, Multi-Spectral Imager and Broadband Radiometer), clouds and aerosols (small particles like dust and dirt that exist in the earth's atmosphere) will be observed on a global scale to improve the accuracy of climate change predictions.

With the EarthCARE mission, observations will be carried out on the distribution of cloud particles and aerosols in a vertical direction and so on. Ny-Ålesund is one of the important observation sites.

The satellite will be launched at the end of this year.

Why are Arctic radiosonde data important ?

Northern Sea RouteArctic cyclones frequently pass→ high waves, strong winds, icing etc.

disturbing the ship navigations

Improving the predictability of numerical weather preditions => more radiosonde data are useful expanding the Arctic observing network evaluating the data impact by data assimilation proposing a future observing network

Icing on Mirai’s anemometer
