Reasons to stock vitamins
Before the days of marginal third party reimbursements, mail order, and huge competition from national chains, pharmacies didn’t need a front end to stay in business. Enough profit came from prescriptions. Now, a front end can be one of your most valuable sources of revenue.
You can go back and forth all day about what to offer in your front end. Should you stock cards and gifts? What about snacks? With vitamins, you don’t need to deliberate. Vitamins will always suit a pharmacy, no matter your market. Whether you’re located in a rural or an urban environment; whether your customers prefer to purchase camping gear or high-end cosmetics, vitamins can do well in community pharmacies.
Vitamins and supplements naturally complement a retail pharmacy, where you can cross-merchandise your products. As you know, when patients take an antibiotic they can experience unpleasant side effects, like an upset stomach. If they take a
supplement, such as a probiotic, it counteracts those negative side effects, which means healthier patients and a healthier bottom line for your business.
With competition from health food stores and other pharmacies, you have to give patients a reason to buy from you. You can likely beat expensive health food stores
on price.
Suggestions to increase sales
Keep in mind that you can’t just line up a bunch of vitamins and supplements on your shelves and expect sales to skyrocket.
Promoting your vitamins starts with simply using your knowledge to educate your patients. Your patients trust your healthcare
advice. After all, pharmacists were voted the second most-trusted profession in America in 2011, according to the annual
Gallup survey.
Whether you have a patient who is concerned about vision health or who wants to know the best
supplementary sleep aids, come out from behind the counter and talk to your patients about
the right vitamins for them. It will mean a sale for your business, and a happy patient.
When it comes to vitamins and nutritional supplements you can also increase sales by paying attention to the trends.
Smith Drug Company works to keep our customers competitive by offering quality vitamin lines with great margins.
How to Increase Front-End Sales With Vitamins
Your patients expect their community pharmacy to supply the products they need to get healthy and stay healthy—and not just the ones found behind the counter. Vitamins and nutritional supplements are in demand for consumers like your patients. According to a 2011 report by Global Industry Analysts Inc., the global market for vitamins is growing. It’s predicted to reach $3.2 billion by 2017.
Your patients trust their hometown pharmacy, which means they’ll be hitting your store shelves to find the vitamins and nutritional supplements they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Give them what they’re looking for! A well-stocked front end complete with the latest vitamins and supplements can add value to your store.

Recognizing National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is an annual observance held in August to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. NIAM was established to encourage people of all ages to make sure they are up to date on the vaccines recommended for them. Communities have continued to use the month each year to raise awareness about the important role vaccines play in preventing serious, sometimes deadly, diseases.
NIAM is sponsored by the National Public Health Information Coalition (NPHIC). For more information on the observance,
visit NPHIC’s NIAM website: www.nphic.org/niam.
COMMUMICATION TOOLKITS
NPHIC, in collaboration with CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, developed communication toolkits to help you communicate about vaccines for various audiences. Each week focuses on a different stage of the lifespan:
Babies and young children (July 31-August 6)Pregnant women (August 7-13)Adults (August 14-20)Preteen/Teen (August 21-27)Back to School (July/August)
There is also an abbreviated toolkit for school-aged children to help you remind parents to get their children vaccinated before the school year starts.
The toolkits include sample key messages, media materials, social media messages, FAQs, and web links and resources. You can also get eye-catching NIAM logos and banners to highlight your partic-ipation in NIAM on your social media profiles. A media outreach toolkit is one of the new resources available this year to help you reach out to media on immunization-related topics. To download the toolkits, visit NPHIC’s NIAM website.

When deciding between brands, millennial consumers seek emotional connections, a recent study by the Fashion Institute of Technology found; 48% of millennials are more likely to buy from a brand if they know the people behind it and 47% expressed a desire for brands to take ownership of their mistakes and take the
consumer’s feedback into account.
The researchers found that millennials were drawn to brands that fulfill a “Trust Loop” with the consumer: brands that are not only more humanized, but focus on
transparency, experience and community rather than simply quality.
The study also revealed that consumers are evolving faster than retailers, creating a “Consumer Experience Gap” that leaves only the most adaptable retailers with a
chance at survival.
FIT’s research provides retailers with key information about how to make loyal customers out of a generation that still prefers to shop in brick and mortar stores, but
unlike their predecessors prefers brands that go the extra mile to forge an authentic personal connection.
With the internet playing such a large role in the way millennials make purchase decisions — 76% browse online before buying at all — trust has become central
to a brand’s success. Retailers can no longer hide from the bad publicity that comes with cybersecurity breaches (e.g. Target’s $150 million data breach) or
other missteps in building consumer trust. Rather, the students at FIT predict: “Brands in the future must win the hearts, minds and now most importantly,
the trust of their consumers.”
For retailers wondering how to form that emotional connection with this generation of consumers, the researchers suggest they develop a “Brand Humanization Theory,” which includes developing a brand
purpose that fosters a community, engaging with consumers on a personal level and being an “Inside Out Organization.”
The results support a trend in the retail industry more broadly, in which personalization has become increasingly
important for brand success. Even in the sphere of e-commerce, personalization could increase revenues
by up to 6%. Brands that appear generic are sparking less interest with consumers, a trend that
played out last holiday season as department stores struggled to keep up with the rest of
the pack.
As retailers look to cater toward the millennial market, brands will be
increasingly expected to show millennials why to purchase from them
over other brands.

Medicare Part D Annual Open Enrollment
Medicare open enrollment is quickly approaching. Open enrollment allows current Medicare patients to re-evaluate their Part D or Medicare Advantage plans. It is vitally important for community pharmacists to provide education to their patients in the evaluation of plans. From year to year plans change, which may affect patient’s copays, out of pocket expenses, costs of plan to the patient, formularies, and preferred pharmacy networks. Given these yearly changes, it is important for patients to re-evaluate their plan.
There are a number of tools available for pharmacists to facilitate patient education in their selection of a plan. Medicare.gov, iMedicare, and Prescribe Medicare are just a few of such tools. Part D Plan reviews are a value added service that community pharmacist may provide to maintain their relationship with a patient.
Please consider utilization of one of these tools during the upcoming Medicare Annual Enrollment period. Smith Drug Company is pleased to assist you. Please contact your Pharmacy Business Consultant or Larry Kobiska at [email protected] for questions or assistance.

First, your pharmacist knows all kinds of secrets that could help you, so perhaps it’s time to start tapping into this under-utilized health
resource. A study published in June 2017 in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology revealed one thing pharmacists know
more about than physicians: penicillin allergy. Apparently, 78 percent of pharmacists knew penicillin allergy can resolve
over time, while only 55 percent of physicians did. And it doesn’t stop there. “Pharmacists generally know a lot more
about drugs than doctors,” writes David E. Williams, President of Health Business Group, on MedCityNews.
“Plus they’re available in convenient locations and at convenient times. You don’t need an appointment
and don’t have to pay. Pharmacists are loathe to second guess doctors, but get to know one and
you’ll find they are a great source of information and will even give you their professional
opinion on whether you are on the right drug.” Tadeh Vartanian, PharmD, clinical pharmacist at CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, adds that pharmacists play an integral role in the healthcare system by serving as a bridge between different specialties. “The knowledge that they possess beyond that of a physician
will really depend on that physician’s specialty,” says Vartanian. “So although, for
instance, a cardiologist may know the various antiarrhythmic agents very well, he or she may be less
familiar with antibiotic agents, and specifically if any of them could affect the cardiovascular drugs that patient is
taking. Pharmacists are the specialists that take all of that medical knowledge and bring it together to catch these types of potential errors, among many others.”

They know what’s in your meds
They monitor your medication use
They know your medication history
They focus on wellness
They understand natural supplements
Your physician might be your first port of call if you’re ill, but when it comes to what’s actually in the drugs they’ve prescribed, your pharmacist is your go-to man or woman. After all, they spent six to eight years in pharmacy school, learning about medicinal chemistry, pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy. “Pharmacists have more training and knowledge than physicians on how medications are made into pills, patches, etc. and how medications are absorbed and distributed in the body, metabolized, and excreted,” says Sally Rafie, PharmD, Pharmacist Specialist at UC San Diego Health. Crucially, pharmacists are also aware of inactive
ingredients in medications that may be problematic for people with allergies, and can advise how to take medications properly (with food, on an empty stomach, with a glass of water, etc).
Pharmacists are the one specialist who will do a great job at tracking your meds, which includes knowing what side effects to look out for, says Rafie. So if you’re experiencing some unexpected or undesirable effects of taking a new drug (for example a loss of sex drive while taking antidepressants or stomach pains from high cholesterol meds), your pharmacist is a great person to ask for advice. Pharmacists also study how medications interact with other drugs and conditions (pharmacodynamics), meaning you’re safe in their hands if you’re tak-ing multiple meds. “In many complex or chronic medical conditions, pharmacists are the experts at managing
the medications,” says Rafie. “Examples include high cholesterol, heart failure, transplant, diabetes, kidney disease, HIV, and so much more.”
Pharmacists readily have access to a patient’s medication fill history, and can diligently identify those patients who may have adherence issues due to any of a variety of factors, such as money, stress, lack of time, and unwanted side effects. “Patients tend to overestimate their own medication compliance, and so rarely bring it up at a physician’s office,” reveals Vartanian. “A pharmacist, however, has hard data to go by and can make appropriate interventions to enhance patient care.” Medication histories are vital to prevent prescription errors and avoid risks to patients; a 2009 article published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology stated that
“pharmacists are better at taking an accurate medication history than many physicians or nurses.”
Pharmacists are fountains of knowledge on all aspect of wellness, such as diabetes management, vaccinations and birth control. “The success of these services is tied to the fact that pharmacists are readily available to most patients without appointment, and this accessibility is a great benefit to patients,” says Vartanian. Phar-macists are often instrumental in helping patients quit smoking. According to DrugTopics magazine, pharma-cists often use the “Five As” approach to help smokers who want to quit, which involves asking patients about their smoking and related habits; advising smokers to make a permanent lifestyle change through smoking
cessation, assessing the patients’ readiness to change; assisting them in the formation of an action plan; arranging for a fol-low-up consultation.
Pharmacists have an in-depth knowledge of the natural supplements industry. “By law, natural products such as herbal supplements and extracts are not allowed to purport medical facts,” says Vartanian. “For instance, green tea extract is a great fat burner, but if consumed too much can cause liver damange. This lack of information from the manufacturers, alongside the wide range of various products, combined with the plethora of both accurate and misleading information online, allow pharmacists to step in and provide the crucial information that patients need.” If you’re taking natural supplements for acne, depression, hot flashes
or any other condition, make sure you tell your pharmacist so they can let you know whether they could potentially interact with your prescription meds.

Proper Tools May Prevent Medicine Errors At Home
Providing parents with picture-based instructions - and with dosing tools that closely match the amount of medication needed - may help reduce cases of medication overdoses in children, researchers say. Poorly designed medication labels and dosing tools lead to dosing errors, especially when parents are given large cups for small doses, the study team writes in Pediatrics, June 27.
“Parents frequently make errors in dosing medications for their children. We did this study because we wanted to find out how to redesign medication labels and dosing tools to help parents understand dosing instructions better,” lead author Dr. Shonna Yin told Reuters Health in an email.
It is very easy to get confused when dosing liquid medications for a child, said Yin, a pediatrician at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. “To help make sure they give the right dose, parents should ask their doctor or pharmacist which dosing tool is best to use,” she said.
The best tool depends on the amount of medication the parent needs to give the child, Yin said. “Using a tool that is too large or too small makes it more likely that a parent will make a mistake.”
The researchers recruited 491 English- and Spanish-speaking parents of children age 8 years or younger, and randomly assigned them to one of four groups, each with a different combination of medication labels and dosing tools including assorted cups and syringes.
Parents were given a medication label with instructions in text only, or both text and pictograms, plus dose measuring tools marked only in milliliters (mL) or in both mL and teaspoons.
Participants were asked to demonstrate how they’d use the labels and to measure three different dosage amounts using three different tools. About 84 percent of parents made at least one error and almost 30 percent made at least one large error such as doubling the correct dose. There were fewer errors, however, when labels contained both text and pictograms and when dosing cups or syringes were close to and at least as large as the amount of medication needed.
For a 2-mL dose, for example, the fewest errors were seen with the 5-mL syringe and for the 7.5-mL dose, the fewest errors were with the 10-mL syringe. In addition, parents were about 30 percent more likely to make mistakes when they used tools marked in mL and teaspoons compared to mL only.
“It is important for parents to use a tool that has markings on it to help them measure out the right amount. This could be an oral syringe, a dropper, a dosing spoon, dosing cup, or even a measuring spoon that is usually used for cooking,” Yin said.
When using any of these tools, parents should carefully check to see that the number and the units used on the tool match what they are trying to give, she added.
“Mixing up milliliters and teaspoons can lead to a parent giving 5 times the dose. If there is no dosing tool at home that has markings on it, I would recommend going to the store to get one or trying to get one from the doctor or pharmacist,” Yin said.
“The study makes it clear that it’s easy to make mistakes with liquid medicine and that using the right syringe can help and that instructions with pictures help as well,” said Dr. Kathleen Walsh, director of patient safety research at the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio.
“There are certain medicines that people tend to think of as safe but actually if you make a big dosing error can be very dangerous, for example, Tylenol or Benadryl are medicines you really want to be careful to give the right dose,” she said.
