O n February 5, 2019 the teachers and staff at Franklin Middle School (FRMS) hosted the 3rd annual National History Day. This year’s theme was “Triumph and Tragedy.” All of the 7th grade students spent the first semester researching, writing and analyzing a topic for this theme. This engaging experience helped student to think critically, improve research and reading skills, enhance problem solving skills, and gain the confidence and self-esteem needed for future academic endeav- ors. The entire 7th grade had the opportunity to create a logo for the “Triumph and Tragedy” theme. The students then voted on the best logo. This year’s logo winner was Arunima Ghosh. Once her logo was chosen, Ms. Heidi Herholz and her art class created the medals and coasters for the judges. Ms. Holly Nickolas and her class created the ribbons for the medals. The event had over 70 judges from FR Senior High School (FRSH), FRMS, the FRSH National Honor Society, Heinz History Center, Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Department of Education students), La Roche College (Department of Education students and professor Dr. Kathryn Silvis), Murrysville Public Library, Murrysville Historical Society, and the University of Pittsburgh (Department of Education’s Dr. Phyllis Sheehy). All of the students who participated in this event had the op- portunity to collaborate with their peers, talk with experts, and learn 21st century college and career readiness skills. In the process, the students at FRMS created some very impressive work that expressed their knowledge and talents.
