Dual-Career News
AAUP Names HERC in Groundbreaking Partner Accommodation Report
a report about dual-career hiring in September 2010 that recommends HERC and reads:
Types of partner accommodation
Many institutions already offer varying types of assistance to dual-career couples including:
Membership in a HERC (Higher Education Recruitment Consortium) or other network: HERCs are formal organizations
of area colleges already established in some regions and states, such as southern California, New England, Missouri,
and New Jersey.10 HERCs provide a variety of services for listing and sharing open positions that can be invaluable in
assisting academic partners. HERC membership costs vary by the size of the institution, making this option, where
available, particularly useful for smaller institutions without the resources to establish a partner-accommodation
program. Institutions may also establish less formal networks for information sharing about openings at nearby
colleges and universities or in local businesses and non-profit organizations. Such arrangements represent the least
controversial option for offering accommodation to academic partners, and may be particularly useful for those

New Dual-Career Member Benefits under Consideration
Finding more ways to help member institutions assist dual-career couples is a core part of the
National and regional HERC missions. The National HERC Advisory Board named expanding dual-
career initiatives as one of three top strategic priorities for the coming year. To this end, someexciting ideas are being considered that will be presented to potential funders, including the
Partnerships for Adaptation, Implementation, and
Dissemination (PAID) grant program. The ideas include:
Authoring and publishing a HERC dual-career booklet for dual-career academic jobseekers that would beavailable to thousands of dual-career couples seekins member institutions. The booklet
would provide practical tips that couples could employ during their academic job search.

Setting up a dual-career 800 number/online chat helpline. This helpline would be made available to the dual-career couples that are being recruited at HERCs member institutions. It would be a confidential service that
dual-career spouses and partners could contact to receive personal one-on-one assistance with their dual-
career concerns. The helpline would provide general job search tips, suggestions about how to maximize HERC
to greatest effect, referrals to resources, and general support during what is often a very stressful process.
Setting up a dual-career consultants collaborative (DCCC). There are dual-career professionals at colleges anduniversities around the country with years of experience in dual-career practices and policies. Campuses which
are interested in making changes/enhancements to how they address dual-career concerns could access the
DCCC to get advice on best practices and program and policy design.
Using social media such as LinkedIn to connect dual-career couples to one another for support and to facultyand staff recruitment professionals for assistance and mutual learning.
Producing online training webinars and on-demand content for dual-career couples with job search tipsspecifically tailored to them.
Producing online training webinars and on-demand content for college and university professionals interestedin learning more about dual-career practices, programs, and policies.

HERC Director [email protected].
Diversity News
The National HERC Advisory Board also named assisting the HERC regions and members with
diversity recruitment as one of three top priorities in 2010-11. Diversity is not a stand-alone
initiative rather you will see a focus on diversity interwoven thr
considering investing resources in website enhancements, advertising and marketing, conference attendance,
partnerships, webinars and metrics.
HERC-wide the registered user demographics have consistently outpaced national averages for both race and gender.
This is one indicator that HERC member job opportunities are reaching a diverse jobseeker population.

HERC Website News
Diversity on the HERC WebsitesThe regional HERCs worked together to develop a set of HERC-wide testimonials that reflect the tremendous diversity
of our organization including faculty, staff, administrator and jobseeker perspectives. These testimonials will soon be
live on all regional HERC websites. In addition, many regional HERCs highlight their diversity initiatives, events, and
partnerships on their homepages.
HERC Resume/CV DatabaseIn less than one year the resume/CV database has grown to include nearly 6,000 candidates, the majority of which hold
advanced degrees. The database is customized for higher education and includes unique fields such as teaching
experience, presentations, publications, relocation preferences, diversity and more. It is available at no charge to HERC
members and jobseekers. HERC members can search candidates by type of position desired (faculty or staff), level of
education, and geographic location. You can also conduct keyword searches to identify highly specific candidate
attributes. To access the database, use your existing login information or contact your regional director. To view a
recorded webinar on how to access and use the database, visit:http://www.vimeo.com/herc

strategy.
A few tips from the session:
From Linkedin:
Use your profile to hire not just to get hired Let the real you shine in your profile Invest the most time in your headline & summary careers on

From Renaissance Strategic Solutions:
Strategize What are your goals and objectives and who is yourtarget audience?
Assess - How are we leveraging all forms of media today? Whatare the strengths and weaknesses in our current approach?
Plan - What do we need to do to get from where we are to wherewe want to be? What resources do we need?
Develop a realistic maintenance plan underestimate the time involved in maintaining a social media
presence.
From the Upper Midwest HERC:
Tap into Gen X staff for expertise among staff/students Get the support of all stakeholders. This could require education
and/or expert consultation to create a climate of interest.
Determine who will learn, manage, and assist others with the
underpinning technology
Consider cost effectiveness of participation and nonparticipation
Assess whether social networking can replace other efforts orresponsibilities
Offer followers something of unique value Set realistic expectations

Bright Horizons - Groundbreaking Results from New Study: Healthy Employees, Healthy Organizations - Bright
Horizons, in cooperation with Dr. Jamie Ladge of Northeastern University, conducted a groundbreaking study
examining the benefits of employer-sponsored family care supports. The study of 4,000 working adults from a varietyof industries including higher education included one group with children under age 13 who had access to employer-
sponsored family care supports including on-site child care, back-up care, and adult/elder care and another group
which did not have access to these supports.
The study showed that employees with access to employer-sponsored family care supports were healthier and more
engagedin their work. Key findings included: 1. Employees withoutaccess to family care supports were nearly one-
third more likely to report being down, depressed, or hopeless in the last month and they were three times more likely
to be treated for high blood pressure and diabetes; and 2. Employees with family care supports were 20 percent less
likely to have missed a day of work in the past six months. To learn more about this groundbreaking study, go to

applicant evaluation tool. Other states with such legislation currently on the books include Oregon, Washington, and
Hawaii with numerous others having legislation pendingincluding California, New York, and the US House of
Representatives.
Generally, most of the pending bills state employers should not use credit checks unless the position requires the
handling of money (think bank or credit union), is a law enforcement position, is for a job in which credit checks are
required by law, or is otherwise substantially job-related and the reasons for use are disclosed.
This legislation is designed to help those out of work due to current economic conditions re-enter the workforce in
positions for which they are qualified without the threat of damaged credit impeding their chances. Employers need to
take note of this trend and implement a best practice methodology to avoid liability.
