NHSC Facts

• The NHSC has more than 10,000 clinicians and more than 17,000 sites

• More than 10.5 million people receive health care from NHSC clinicians

• There are more than 10,500 job vacancies for NHSC primary care medical, dental and mental health clinicians

• Most (more than 70 percent) of NHSC clinicians continue to work in underserved areas after completing their service commitment.

NHSC Facts

• NHSC support is tax-free. • NHSC loan repayments and scholarships

(except for monthly stipends) are exempt from Federal income tax.

• Corps members earn competitive salaries.• Corps members negotiate their salaries

directly with their service site. Sites are prohibited from paying Corps members less than their similarly qualified non-Corps colleagues

What is the NHSC Scholarship Program?

• Payment for tuition, required fees, and other reasonable educational costs

• Monthly support stipend (taxable) • Assistance in finding a practice site

Am I Eligible?

• To receive an NHSC scholarship, you must be – U.S. citizen or U.S. national – Full-time student at an accredited school,

pursuing a degree in: • Medicine (MD or DO) • Dentistry (DDS or DMD) • Nurse practitioner • Certified nurse-midwife • Physician assistant (in primary care)

What is the Service Commitment?

• 1 year for each year of support (minimum of two years service) at an approved site in a high-need Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) soon after they graduate,

• serve a primary care residency (family medicine, general pediatrics, general internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology or psychiatry for physicians and general or pediatric for dentists) and are licensed.

• Scholars compete for employment at the approved service sites of their choice from a listing of job vacancies in their discipline and specialty.

• NHSC helps Scholars select a compatible service site and pays for travel to and from interviews.

NHSC Loan Repayment Program

• Primary care providers who join the Corps after graduation can receive up to $170,000 in loan repayment for completing a five-year service commitment.

Mental Health Facility, State and County Departments of Health Clinic, Mobile Unit, Free Clinic, Immigration and customs Enforcement (ICE) Health Service Corps)
