No. 2/2 North Dakota holds a healthy eight-point lead in first place, but heads to No. 11/11 Minnesota Duluth this weekend, with the Bulldogs in second place. This is UMD and UND’s lone regular-season series, with the Bulldogs needing a sweep to get within two points. No team has overcome more than two points to win the Penrose Cup this late in the season in the NCHC’s six-year history. In another key standings clash for the final home-ice playoff spot, St. Cloud St heads to Western Michigan in a battle of fourth (WMU) and fifth (SCSU) place. Both the Broncos and Huskies are coming off home sweeps last weekend. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: After North Dakota built up a 15-game unbeaten streak (14-0-1) earlier this season, the NCHC is still home to the longest active unbeaten streak in the country. No. 5/5 Denver is unbeaten in nine straight (6-0-3), the longest active unbeaten streak in the NCAA, after tying at Omaha twice last weekend. The Pioneers remain on the road this weekend at Miami. WILKIE THIS WAY: Colorado College senior forward Chris Wilkie is tied for the NCAA lead with 17 goals this season, along with three other players. His 0.85 goals per game are second nationally. He also leads the NCAA averaging 5.15 shots on goal per game. Wilkie had his five-game goal-scoring streak snapped last Saturday at Western Michigan, but still has eight goals and nine points in his last six games. YOU STAY CLASSY, HUGH MCGING: Western Michigan senior forward and captain Hugh McGing is among only 20 men’s ice hockey student- athletes named candidates for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award in 2019-20, it was announced Wednesday. McGing is the lone representative from the NCHC up for the national award, which honors seniors who excel both on and off the ice, and in the community. Ten finalists will be announced in February, while the winner is announced on April 10 at the Frozen Four in Detroit, Mich. ON TOP AT BOTH ENDS OF THE ICE: North Dakota ranks in the top four nationally in both offense (4.22 gpg/1st in NCAA) and defense (1.96 gapg/4th in NCAA) on the season. No other team in the country ranks in the top five in both categories, as UND’s +2.26 goal margin per game is second nationally. Denver is the only other NCHC team in the top 10 in either category, tying for eighth on defense, giving up 2.08 goals per game. DU and Omaha tie for 13th in the NCAA on offense. • Denver picked up a pair of ties at Omaha last weekend, drawing 1-1 on Friday and 2-2 on Saturday, with freshman Bobby Brink scoring with 14 seconds left in regulation Saturday to force overtime a second straight night. Both nights, DU earned the extra point in conference play, Friday via a five-round shootout and Saturday in 3-on-3 overtime. DU also won a shootout at Minnesota Duluth earlier this year.

• The Pioneers are now on a nine-game unbeaten streak (6-0-3), tied for their longest unbeaten stretch of the season. Denver opened the season on a nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1). Ten games would mark Denver’s longest unbeaten streak in a single season since its 13-game winning streak from Jan. 21 – March 11, 2017. The nine-game un-beaten streak is also the longest active unbeaten streak in the country.

• Denver’s sophomore class ranks second in NCAA scoring with 93 points this season (33g, 60a) and accounts for 43 percent of the team’s point production. Among that class, Cole Guttman has six goals and four assists in his last nine games and Brett Stapley is on a five-game point streak with one goal and seven assists.

• Miami held 2-0 leads both nights against then-top-ranked North Dakota last weekend, but only managed one point in the series, earning a 4-4 overtime tie on Friday. UND took the extra standings point in a shootout Friday and won Saturday’s finale, 5-3, breaking a tie late.

• Senior goaltender Ryan Larkin has started 112 of a possible 131 games in net since his freshman season, including Friday against UND. He ranks second in Miami history with 2,967 career saves and is just nine saves shy of setting the school’s all-time record held by David Burleigh.

• Junior forward Casey Gilling had a hand in all four Miami goals Friday against UND, scoring two and assisting on the other two for a career-high four points. It was also just his second career multi-goal game. He added two more assists Saturday, contributing on six of Mi-ami’s seven goals in the series. UMD managed only one goal on the weekend, from junior Kobe Roth on the power play, in Friday’s 2-1 defeat. The Bulldogs were then shut out, 2-0, on Saturday, the first time UMD had been blanked all season. It was the third time the Bulldogs have been swept this year, but first in conference play.

• Senior All-American Hunter Shepard, the reigning NCHC Goaltender of the Year, has now made 103 consecutive starts (which is one shy of the NCAA record set by Cornell University’s Ben Scrivens from 2007-10). Shepherd’s ironman streak dates back to Oct. 21, 2017.

• The Bulldogs rank fifth nationally on the power play (27.0 percent) and sixth in power play goals (24). UMD has scored more of its total goals on the power play this season (36.4 percent) than all but two oth-er teams: Bowling Green (39.7 percent) and Canisius (37.5 percent).

HUNTING DOWN A RECORD: Minnesota Duluth senior goaltender Hunter Shepard, the reigning NCHC Goalie of the Year, has made 103 consecutive starts in net entering this weekend’s series with North Dakota. He is one shy of the NCAA record for consecutive starts set by Cornell’s Ben Scrivens from 2007-10. Shepherd’s ironman streak dates back to Oct. 21, 2017. He can tie the record Friday night and break the record Saturday night if he starts both games.

WHAT A SHOT SHOW: Three NCHC teams rank in the top nine nationally in shots on goal per game, including two of the top three. Western Michigan is second in the country and tops in the NCHC in shots on goal per game averaging 35.68 shots on target per game. Denver is third nationally in shots on goal (35.67), while Minnesota Duluth is ninth (32.68). North Dakota leads the country in fewest shots on goal allowed per game, giving up only 20.43 shots on goal per game to its opponents, 2.38 shots per game fewer than any other NCAA team.

ALL THEY DO IS (SCORE TO) WIN: Three players share the national lead for game-winning goals with five each and two of them reside in the NCHC in North Dakota junior forward Jordan Kawaguchi and Denver sophomore forward Cole Guttman. Four of Kawaguchi’s five game-winners came in November, while he has 12 goals this season and his 35 points rank third nationally. Guttman has 10 goals and 16 points this year. Omaha freshman forward Joey Abate and UND junior forward Collin Adams are tied for fourth nationally with four game-winners each this season. (page 27)

SCORIN’ SCOTTY: Minnesota Duluth junior defenseman Scott Perunovich, the two-time NCHC Offensive Defenseman of the Year, ranks tied for fourth among all NCAA defensemen with 25 points this season. Perunovich’s 22 assists and 1.00 assists per game both lead all NCAA defensemen and rank tied for third nationally among all NCAA skaters. (page 26)

HOBEY HOPEFULS: Fan voting for the 2020 Hobey Baker Award is now open and 14 NCHC players were nominated by their schools, with all eight teams having at least one representative. The NCHC’s lone Hobey Baker Award winner is former Denver defenseman Will Butcher in 2017. Among the NCHC’s 14 nominees, nine are forwards, four are defensemen and one is a goaltender. By class, six NCHC nominees are seniors, five are juniors and three are sophomores. The 14 nominees trail only ECAC Hockey’s 16 among conferences. The 14 nominees are:

NUMBER ONE IN NON-CONFERENCE: Only two non-conference series remain this season among NCHC teams (Western Michigan vs. RPI and Colorado College vs. Air Force, both in February). So far this season, NCHC teams have combined to go 45-26-12 in non-conference play, with the .614 win percentage tops among the six Division I men’s hockey conferences. The NCHC has posted the best combined non-conference regular-season win percentage among the conferences four of the last five seasons, including last year at .659. (page 7)

CENTURY CLUB ACCESS: With three points at Bowling Green on Dec. 30, Miami senior forward and captain Gordie Green became the first active NCHC player to record 100 career points. He now has 44 goals and 62 assists for 106 points in 133 career games. Two other NCHC players are inching closer to the Century Club with Western Michigan senior forward and captain Hugh McGing just one point away with 99 points (37g, 62a in 133 GP) and St. Cloud State senior defenseman and captain Jack Ahcan four away at 96 points (18g, 78a in 133 GP).

After leading the NCAA in goals and points in December, Wilkie earned NCHC Player of

the Month for December. In six games during the month, he potted eight goals, two more than any other NCAA player, while his 1.33 gpg were also tops nationally among players with more than two games played in December. Wilkie opened December with a five-point weekend in a sweep at Princeton Dec. 6-7, earning NCHC Forward of the Week and NCAA First Star of the Week. He notched two goals and three points in the series opener, while potting both of CC’s goals, including the overtime winner, a night later to cap a 2-1 win. Wilkie then scored four goals at the Ledyard Classic Dec. 28-29 to earn All-Tournament Team honors, including his first career hat trick. The three goals came in a span of 6:29 in the third period of a 7-3 win over St. Lawrence. Wilkie averaged 1.50 ppg in December, with his nine points tying for the NCAA lead. The Sen-ators prospect tallied.one goal in four of his six games, including two game-winning goals, and had multiple goals in half his December contests.

Krannila had a breakout month in December to help St. Cloud State to a 4-2-0 record,

racking up six points in six games after total-ing only four points in his first 12 games as a Husky. His six points led all NCHC freshmen in December and tied for second in the NCAA, while his four assists tied for first nationally among rookies in the month. His 1.00 points per game led all NCHC rookies with more than two games played in December, while he also potted two goals in the month. Krannila opened December with his sec-ond career goal, tallying the game’s first goal in a 2-1 win at Miami on Dec. 6. He then tal-lied his second goal of the month on Dec. 14, striking on the power play in the series finale against Omaha. The draft-eligible forward then erupted for a career-high four assists (and points) on Dec. 28, helping lead SCSU to a 7-2 upset win over then-No. 2 Minnesota State in the Mariucci Classic. Krannila set up the game-winning goal, finished the game +5 and earned Second Star of the Game. He was also named to the Mariucci Classic All-Tourna-ment Team.

Scheel repeated as NCHC Goaltender of the Month after backstopping North

Dakota to a 2-0-0 record in December, as he played every minute in UND’s only two NCAA games in December. He allowed just two goals during the month, including only one even strength. Scheel’s .971 save per-centage (68/70) in December led the NCHC and ranked fourth nationally, while his 0.97 goals-against average was second in the conference and seventh in the NCAA. Scheel’s only series came in a sweep at then-No. 17 Western Michigan on Dec. 6-7, as he collected his 11th and 12th career wins over a ranked team. He started the month with perhaps his best game of the season, stopping every shot he faced in the series opener with WMU for a career-high 41 saves in a 1-0 overtime win. It was his second shutout of the season and third of his career as he earned First Star of the Game. The next night, he made 27 more saves in an 8-2 victory, with one of WMU’s goals coming on the power play, as he earned the game’s Third Star. Scheel was named NCHC Goaltender of the Week following the sweep.

JuLie & SPeNCeR PeNRoSe memoRiaL CuP

Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose

Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second straight and third Penrose Cup overall last season, also winning it in the NCHC’s inaugural season (2013-14). North Dakota has won two Penrose Cups back-to-back (2014-15, 2015-16), while Denver is the only other Penrose Cup champion (2016-17) to date.
