Hello doggers,

First and foremost, are you entered in the Finals? The day is coming, better get it in. We are still looking for sponsors for this event, so please help all that you can. Also, there will be an auction and any and all items for the auction would be appreciated.

We did have the Futurity and it seemed to be a success. I say seemed as I have been stuck on my tractor and was unable to attend. I had planned on not running in the Futurity but wanted to run in the regular Open and Nursery trial. Didn't get to. That really stinks putting on a trial and not even get to run your dogs in that trial. That’s farming and ranching though. Never can look at the calendar and assume anything. The good Lord and Mother Nature have their own plan in place, and taking my opinions into consideration are not a part of that equation.

I have included a couple of pictures with this article. I try not to use this article to point on many personal things, but after coming across this this morning I felt I needed to share this. I was checking fields this morning and came across this picture of the little cross and the little pot of flowers. During my time on the tractor, we lost our dear old dog Taz. I’m not sure how old Taz was, but he was just a grade dog that I had raised out of my old dog Dottie. These were the dogs that really got my interest and formally I had never trained. They knew bring ‘em back and lie down. That's it and that's all I needed.

Anyhow, most of you that have come here knew who Taz was. Taz was pretty well two-legged as he had some bad wrecks

during his life, but because of his impact on us we just couldn't put him down. He just hung out and did what he wanted. Every so often the goats and sheep would get out and he would chase them a bit. A good life for an old friend. As I mentioned, the picture of the cross and the pot of flowers were placed by Gavin, my youngest. This was his dog. Gavin did not work this dog much, but this was his pal. This sight really got to me for a bit. What a profound effect these animals can have on us.

Isn’t that what we, the NCA are all about? I think that is what the founders had in mind for what this is. It's about the completion and all. But it is so much bigger and more important than that. It’s to show people that these dogs are not only our workmates, but also our friends, colleagues, and maybe even the leaders sometimes. What life would each of us have without our dogs? That lends to what we all need to keep in mind. The promotion of the cattledog, and allow people to find the usefulness and the many other qualities a dog can lend to their lives. Go rest high, old Taz, your work is done!

Keep those doggies rollin!

Cross made and placed by 10 year old Gavin.

Patty Koller, NCA Northeast Director Hi, I’m Patty Koller from Donnellson Iowa (which is almost as far southeast in Iowa you can get). I was asked by Jeff Mundorf and several board members to take Jeff’s place on the board to finish out his term. (Jeff was the NE Region Director.) After some thought, I agreed, and at the last board meeting the board appointed me to fill the one year that is left on Jeff’s term. I am honored that I was asked & appointed. Looking at who is on the board had a role in the choice I made. NCA can either grow or die and I think with the board and membership we have, we can grow. Even though we are from many different areas of two nations, with different backgrounds and different philosophies, I believe we can work together to grow NCA. We will have our disagreements but we will respect and listen to others.

A little about myself. I grew up on a farm near Donnellson, I can’t remember when there wasn’t a farm dog around. It was the typical Iowa farm for that time, cattle, hogs, chickens, corn, beans, hay and a big garden. I consider myself very fortunate to grow up in that environment with the parents & family I had, enjoying the simple things in life, such as the smell of freshly cut alfalfa hay (even though it meant a lot of work putting it into small square bales!), beautiful sunrises and sunsets and being outdoors. Grandpa & Grandma lived down the road, with my 3 sisters, 1 brother and I frequent visitors to their place, especially if we knew Mom was having liver for dinner! While eating Grandma’s cookies, Grandpa would entertain us kids by telling us what the dogs and cats were thinking. Looking back, I can see that played a big part in how I view animals, they should be respected just like humans.

I now own the farm I grew up on and my grandparent’s farm. With my husband, we grow corn, soybeans and hay along with my husband’s sheep and an occasional group of background cattle thrown in. I rent out my pasture to a guy that appreciates a good working dog and the benefits he gets from cattle that are worked with dogs. And wants me to work his cattle, what a deal! Conservation is important to me and many things I do on the farm are done with conservation in mind.

I started my own ag consulting business, Field Quest LLC, in the 1990’s. A major part of my business is grid sampling, fertilizer recommendations and manure/nutrient management plans that are required by the state. Ag people are some of the most enjoyable people to be around and I am very lucky to have great clients. Farmers and Ranchers don’t look for your college degree (or lack of, in my case), you have to earn their respect by what you do and the person you are.

Most of the dogs I grew up with had some border collie in them but it wasn’t until in the early 2000’s that I got a full-blooded border collie which led me into training and trialing. I was fortunate to have a guy 45 minutes away that used to put on several trials a year, something I think of often on my way to

trials that are now 6+ hours away from Donnellson. My first dog was a tri-red rough coat named Jaz. He was by far a better dog than I was a handler and I wish I could have him back to do again. It took me too many years to realize he knew what he was doing and I didn’t! Thankfully he didn’t hold my ignorance against me. Now, most of the dogs I have are descendants from him so maybe, in a way, I can have my redo. I am fortunate to have some great mentors that have always been very willing and helpful to me. Thank you, Juan, Jeff, Tim and to Tom Blasdell, the one that taught me how cattle think and spent hours taking obstacles with me. Also, Lori Herbel for answers to life’s questions, keeping a laugh nearby and a role model for volunteering.

I have heard many times from different people that the NCA is an organization that is willing to help others, I hope that continues as that can be rare in an organization that also competes. It is also an organization that has some amazing volunteers that work in the background. Those have inspired me to accept this position and do more. Being on the newsletter staff is part of it but now I need to do more. Being a new director, I have some big shoes of Jeff’s to fill but I have many willing to guide me and I hope that includes you.

NATIONAL LEADER BOARD FINAL STANDINGS 2019

Hello from the NCA Office!   I really looking forward to meeting many of you for the first time as your NCA Executive Secretary at the upcoming National Finals June 12-16!  Last year, my husband, Craig, and I came to the finals to just check it all out. By the end of the event, I signed up to take on the secretarial duties for the NCA!  I have really enjoyed talking with many of you over the year and am excited for June.   Handler check-in will be available on Tuesday, June 11, from noon to 8p at the Archer Complex.  I will try to have signs out to make it easy to find me.  On June 12 and beyond, it should be pretty easy to find me during the Finals if you need anything or have questions.  For those of you who reserved an RV site, I will email you before the Finals with your assigned spot so that you can just get parked without having to find me.   We are excited for the NCA Benefit Auction and dinner hosted by the Laramie County Cowbelles on June 12.  We really need your help with auction items!  Please email me at [email protected] or call the office at 970-224-2437 to let me know if you can donate an item or two.  Last year’s auction was really fun and raised over $6k for the NCA to help fund the Finals. Thank you for your support and happy trialing!
