observations of the

NBA

Efforts to include the gaps

in the curriculum are not

seen.

The institution was earlier affiliated to

Andhra University. The curriculum then

was completely designed by the

University. The institution did not have a

role to play in such circumstances. The

institution has since attained

Autonomous status in the year 2015. The

gaps identified earlier were taken care of

in the design of Autonomous curriculum.

A few of the changes introduced are

referred at 3.1 above.

Appendix I

4. Details of the Action taken on the Observation of NBA during last visit

The department of Mechanical engineering has taken the deficiencies, weaknesses and

strengths pointed out by the NBA team into perspective. The following steps were initiated to rectify

the weaknesses/ deficiencies.

A. Weaknesses:

I. Student success rate is low

Weak students were identified in each subject and remedial classes are conducted

continually throughout the semester. Further, for the benefit of the students, the course

materials of all the pertinent subjects are uploaded online through Moodle software.

II. Laboratories have bare minimum equipment

The laboratories were earlier established as per AU curriculum. The curriculum has

been redesigned after obtaining autonomous status. Extra experiments were added wherever

necessary to enhance the quality of laboratory work. New labs over and above the curriculum

were also established which could be used for project works. The details are as mentioned

below:

IV. There is no professional development plan (PDP) for faculty and support.

1. There is an adequate budgetary support every academic year for professional

development, wherein the faculty are encouraged to participate in seminars, conferences,

workshops at national and international level. An annual budget of Rs-1,25,000/- is

exclusively earmarked for this purpose. The budget allocated is supplemented through

sponsorships from other organizations. Academic leaves are sanctioned to the faculty

who attend such programmes.

2. The institution also allows faculty to pursue PhD through QIP. The faculty who opt for

such programmes are provided academic leaves/ special privilege leaves for completing

the preliminary course work with full salary and thereafter they are sanctioned leave for 3

complete years with half salary.

3. The faculty who are pursuing PhD on part-time basis in other institutions are also

provided academic leaves/ special privilege leaves for completing the preliminary course

work and also whenever it is needed.

V. Only few faculty members are involved in accreditation processes. Other faculty

members are not aware of the OBE.

The new entrants in faculty ranks are imparted training on OBE in the institution

level. This is further supplemented by training classes at the departmental level. The senior

faculty from the department are sponsored for workshops on OBE organized in other

institutions where resource persons are from premier institutions. These faculty in turn hold

similar training sessions for the remaining faculty of the department.

VI. Only conventional methods are used in classroom teaching.

The quality of class room teaching is certainly enhanced by using modern techniques.

The teaching-learning process would be certainly effective. Number of steps have been

initiated in this direction, which has created a positive impact. Faculty are utilizing projectors

for PPTs, Models for practical observation and animations also, wherever models are not

available. These animations are mostly developed by the faculty of the department by

utilizing the modern software. E-learning is also introduced through MOODLE’s software.

VII. Quality of sessional question papers needs improvement.

Question papers are being prepared such that they meet the course outcomes which

reflect Bloom’s taxonomy. The question papers are also peer reviewed to maintain standards.

VIII. Assessment of internal assessment answer sheets and laboratory work is not

satisfactory.

The scheme of evaluation is prepared and is followed by the faculty in assessing the

internal mid exams. To make the laboratory evaluation process methodological and object

oriented, Rubrics has been introduced. The faculty in the lab class work evaluate each

student as per the Rubrics prepared for each Laboratory.

IX. Involvement of industry in teaching- learning process is inadequate.

The inputs from industry are considered through meetings of Academic planning and

Monitoring cell and departmental BOS in which representatives at executive level of industry

are involved.

We are also conducting hands on training programmes for students on Automobile, NDT &

R&AC to get practical exposure.

B. Deficiencies:

I. Course outcomes are not written properly.

COs have been thoroughly modified in light of the comments of NBA. Bloom’s

taxonomy is adhered in formulating the COs with the higher levels of learning included.

II. Students are unaware of PEOs, POs and COs.

Display boards containing PEOs, POs and PSOs have been conspicuously placed in

every floor to draw the attention of students. The Course Outcomes of all subjects

pertaining to a year have been displayed in the respective class rooms. This had a positive

impact on the students. We are also arranging special classes exclusively for educating

the students on OBE and its objectives at the start of academic year. During the

commencement of class work in each course, faculty explains about COs.

III. Faculty research papers are published only in local journals. Very few papers have

been published in quality journals.

The management has always encouraged the faculty to pursue research vigorously

and produce quality papers. Financial incentives have also been earmarked to this end to

produce papers in quality journals. The statistics of the papers published in the last three

academic years is tabulated below:

VI. Quality of curriculum is also an issue but since the college has been granted

Autonomous institute status by UGC, this may be taken care by the new BOS.

The concern expressed by the NBA evaluator on the quality of the curriculum is true and

is in line with our views on this subject. Now that the college has obtained autonomous

status, the entire curriculum has been thoroughly modified and examined by expert

members of BOS and Academic Council. A number of modifications with regards to the

course structure and syllabi of different subjects is done.
