SPEAKERS

Dr. Robert Zarr is a board-certified pediatrician at Unity Health Care, located in Washington, DC, where he cares for low-income and immigrant populations. He is Founder and Medical Director of Park Rx America (www.ParkRxAmerica.org), a community health initiative to prescribe nature to patients and families to prevent and treat chronic disease and promote wellness. He previously served as the Park Rx Advisor to the National Park Service in his national advocacy to connect people to parks.

Ted Cable is Professor of Park Management and Conservation at Kansas State University. He has authored 15 books, several book chapters, and more than 200 articles, reports, and presentations dealing with nature, travel and heritage interpretation. Dr. Cable has traveled and worked extensively in Africa, Asia and Latin America, teaching and consulting about heritage interpretation. While in Mali he tracked desert elephants near Timbuktu with a National Geographic TV film crew while collecting ecotourism data in villages along the route. In 2005, he received both the William C. Everhart Award as part of Clemson Universi-ty’s George B. Hartzog Environmental Awards Program as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Missouri Interpreters. In 1996, he received the National Association for Interpretation’s Master of Interpretation Award and in 2000 he received their highest honor by being named a Fellow of the National Association for Interpretation.

Dr. Ted Cable, Professor at Kansas State University

John Norbeck became DCNR Deputy Secretary for Parks and Forestry in August 2015. As deputy, he oversees operations of the bureaus of State Parks, Forestry, and Facility Design and Construction, and helps advance DCNR’s strategic initiatives. Norbeck served as the director of the Bureau of State Parks from 2006-2012. During his tenure, the bureau was awarded the National Gold Medal for Best Managed State Park System in the country, 2009-2011. Norbeck spearheaded outstanding infrastructure investments in the Pennsylvania Wilds, including the Bald Eagle Nature Inn, Elk Country Visitor Center, Kinzua Bridge Skywalk, and the Sinnemahoning Wildlife Center.Additionally, he served as the lead for the Lower Susquehanna Conservation Landscape, increased public private partnerships from 100 to 145 over six years, updated the agency’s revenue enhancement program from $13 million to $21.5 million annually, and established a Green Parks Initiative resulting in reducing the bureau’s carbon footprint and increasing energy efficiencies throughout the agency. Prior to joining DCNR, Norbeck served nearly 30 years through the ranks as a state parks professional in Maryland Department of Natural Resources, State Forest and Park Service. In 2012 he was awarded the President’s Award from the National Association of State Parks Directors.Norbeck also has served as the chief operating officer of PennFuture, a statewide environmental advocacy organization.

She joined NPT in 2006 and has overseen the significant expansion of National Park Trust’s mission of park preservation and youth programs, including a renewed focus on high-priority land acquisition projects to benefit the National Park Service, and in 2009 the launch of NPT’s innovative Buddy Bison School Program which currently provides outdoor environmental education for 69 Title I schools. This was followed in 2011 by the creation of National Kids to Parks Day, held annually on the 3rd Saturday in May, and organized by NPT in collaboration with national partners — representing all 50 states and Washington, DC. In 2018, more than 1 million participants celebrated the day, enjoying more 1,200 park events and programs. Grace holds an AB degree in chemistry (biologic specialization) from Duke University, worked as an analytical chemist at the National Institutes of Health, and then as an editor for Analytical Chemistry published by the American Chemical Society. For ten years, Grace served on the board of the Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, playing a leadership role in the school’s strategic plan and development initiatives including two capital campaigns and the annual fund. She currently serves on the inaugural board of the newly created Park Institute of America located at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment and on the steering committee for the Outdoors Alliance for Kids (OAK).

Grace Lee, Executive Director of the National Park Trust

Kelly’s 20-year career with Arkansas State Parks began with six years in the field as a frontline interpreter at Lake Ouachita and DeGray Lake. She then served eight years as statewide Assistant Chief of Interpretation before being promoted in 2013 to her current position as Chief of Interpretation. Based in the agency’s headquarters in Little Rock, Kelly recruits, coaches, and evaluates park interpreters and leads interpretive master planning. She also supervises the division’s creative services shop, providing oversight on all publications, trail signs, and exhibits. An active leader in the National Association for Interpretation, she has served on their Board of Directors; holds credentials through NAI as a Certified Heritage Interpreter, Trainer, and Planner; and in 2010 received their national Master Interpretive Manager Award. Additionally, she is a Certified Public Manager (CPM®) through the Arkansas Public Administration Consortium, and in 2019 will graduate from the NASPD Leadership School. Kelly’s speaking/training engagements have afforded her extensive travel experience, with invitations to keynote in multiple US states and internationally in Korea, Mexico, and Canada. She credits her parents and a lifetime of Girl Scouting for her love of nature and the outdoors. As a kayaker, mountain and road biker, and trail runner, Kelly lives her motto of “Play outside often!”

Lynelle McKay is the Chief Customer Office of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), leading the team accountable for Movement-wide membership health and growth, Lynelle is responsible for the mission delivery of Girl Scouting: girl programs, volunteer delivery and support, and the support and capacity building of the 112 councils who facilitate Girl Scouting in local communities across the United States. Prior to joining GSUSA, Lynelle was the Chief Executive Officer of GSCTX. During her tenure, she led the council to become one of GSUSA’s top-performers in membership growth, member retention, and financial stability. Ms. McKay received her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawaii. She is the mother of two adult sons and resides with her husband Jim in Austin, Texas.

Since assuming this position in 2005, Bob has guided Airstream through one of the worst economic downturns in industry history and lead the company to record sales fueled by product innovation, cutting edge marketing, and the public’s renewed appreciation for Airstream’s authenticity and quality. Prior to becoming CEO, Bob served as Airstream’s VP of Product Development and Engineering. In that job, he shaped business strategy and oversaw programs to expand product offerings to new customer groups. Bob Wheeler came to recreational vehicles from the auto industry. After earning a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Rochester, he joined General Motors.In addition to his engineering degree, Bob holds an MBA from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Bob lives in Columbus, OH, with his wife and their three boys. He is an avid cyclist.

Peggy Sanchez Mills is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails, the premier national organization for girls. Throughout her 30 year career she has been a strong advocate for programs and public policy promoting the interests of girls and women. Prior to her return to her native New Mexico, Ms Sanchez Mills served as the CEO of the YWCA of the United States in Washington D.C. She additionally served as the first CEO of the National Healthy Start Association. Prior to her years in DC, she served for 20 years as the CEO for the YWCA of Tampa Bay. Additionally Ms Sanchez Mills has testified and/or worked with the Congress on the reauthorizations of the Violence Against Women, Healthy Start and Adolescent Pregnancy Acts.Ms. Sanchez Mills holds a Master in Public Administration degree from Golden Gate University and her undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida. She has received Distinguished Alumni awards from each of these institutions. She has been honored with many awards including being named one of the Top 80 Hispanic Business Women of the Year by Hispanic Business magazine and Woman of Influence in New Mexico.

Jen Zuckerman, Director of Strategic Initiatives, World Food Policy Center Duke University Jen Zuckerman is the Director of Strategic Initiatives at the newly formed World Food Policy Center at Duke University. There, she will be working with partners across North Carolina and the US to examine best practice in food policy and to create model food communities at home. Prior to starting at Duke, Jen worked for eleven years with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, serving at the Director of Strategic Partnerships and the Senior Program Officer for Healthy Living, focusing on increasing access to safe active environments and on providing sources for healthy, locally sourced food, with a commitment to early childhood development and food systems. She previously worked at NC State University’s Recreation Resources Service where she worked with parks and recreation agencies across the state to help develop partnerships for the benefit of community health. Jen’s has also worked in a cross section of North Carolina nonprofits. She earned her undergraduate and masters degrees from NC State University in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management

Jaime Berman Matyas is president and Chief Executive Officer of the Student Conservation Association, the nation’s oldest and largest youth conservation organization. Prior to joining SCA, Jaime held a variety of senior positions with the National Wildlife Federation, including vp of education, executive vice president and Chief Operating Officer. With more than 25 years of experience in conservation education, partnership development and management, Jaime creatively advances SCA’s mission – and her own personal passion – of connecting young people with nature. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School’s Executive Education Program, Jaime is also a certified Black Belt in Innovation Engineering. An avid outdoor enthusiast, Jaime credits her childhood summers in parks and forests for her stirring her love of nature.

Jason Urroz is an interpreter who loves providing people with meaningful connections to nature through outdoor exploration. A former National Park Service Ranger in Yosemite, Jason Urroz is now the Director of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s Kids in Parks program—a self-guided, brochure-led program designed to get kids and families “unplugged”, outdoors, and reconnected to nature for both their overall health and the health of our parks and public lands.

As Deputy Director, Dan Smith plays an essential role in leading the National Park Service employees who protect, preserve and share America’s 417 national parks the American people and who manage the NPS programs that help communities across the nation preserve local history and create close-to-home recreational opportunities. Smith served as superintendent of Colonial National Historical Park from 2004 to 2015, where he managed a 23-mile parkway and three historic sites, including the first permanent British colony in America at Jamestown and the site of the 1781 Revolutionary War victory of General George Washington over British General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. During his tenure at the park, Smith oversaw the completion of a new visitor center and a new research center at Jamestown in preparation for the 400th anniversary commemoration of the Jamestown settlement in 2007.Smith also served previously as Special Assistant to the National Park Service Director and Assistant Director of Legislative and Congressional Affairs. He also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks at the Department of the Interior and was responsible for oversight of the multi-billion dollar budgets and programs of the National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Smith also worked at the General Services Administration for ten years. Smith was born in Maine. A Vietnam War veteran, Smith served in the U.S. Army’s 4th Infantry. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Master of Science in Recreation Administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is also an Eagle Scout.
