various types of cancer are being increased in the country during therecent years; if so, the steps being taken by the Government tocontrol the said disease?

 Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and

Coordination: In Pakistan about 148,000 new cases of cancers are diagnosed.

STEPS TAKEN BY THE MINISTRY

Cancer occurs due to either genetic factors or environmental factors likefood, addictions, radiations and infections. Environmental factors can be addressedby control on diet, quality of food and controlling infections.

The Ministry has taken various steps including preventive measures aswell as treatment of patients.

1. National Cancer registry: Ministry in 2015-16 has identified PHRCas the focal site to collect national data on cancer. Presently data isbeing collected from 6 sites and data of almost 9000 cases has beenreceived and analyzed (table). The data (2015-16) shows that infemales breast cancer is most common i.e. 30.2% followed bycancers of female reproductive organs (11.7%), oro-pharyngeal(8.1%) and gastrointestinal (7%) while in males, oro-pharyngeal wasthe most common (12.8%) followed by gastro intestinal tract (11.3%),blood and bone marrow (9.6%) and urinary system (8.3%).

4. Recently NCD survey was undertaken by PHRC to identify therisk factors. The survey showed tobacco use, obesity, unhealthy dietand sedentary lifestyle as the risk factors in Pakistan.

5. In Pakistan most common cancers like oral and lungs are due totobacco use (smoked/smokeless). The cancer data collected from 6

sites shows a direct association of these cancers with tobacco use(Figure). The Ministry has taken different steps to reduce the burdenof tobacco use in the country which will eventually help in reducingthe burden of Cancers. These includes;

(a) Establishment of Tobacco Control Cell in the Ministry which isresponsible for monitoring and reducing tobacco use throughlegislation and punishment that is enforced through police andother departments.

(e) At the Provincial level, Punjab has banned Shisha smoking whileuse of non smoking tobacco has been banned in Sindh.
