Dr. Rita Kalra, Secretary Rtn. Jeeten Bhambri, Rtn. Dr. Harinder Jit Kaur and Rtn. Renu Chopra In our regular meeting on September 08, 2017 President Rtn. Dr. Rita Kalra welcomed the chief guest of the meeting, Prof. Jitendra Mohan, Professor Emeritus and a former Chairman of Department of Psychology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He was formally introduced by Rtn. Prof. Rana Nayar. Prof. Jitendra Mohan MA and Ph.D from Panjab University, Chandigarh, Prof. Jitendra Mohan is a former Dean of Faculty of Arts, Chairman (Professor) of Department of Psychology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Visiting Professor in U.K., Malaysia, Iran, Serbia and China. He has publications of 27 books in his name and over 300 research papers. Editor-in- Chief of Indian Journal of Psychology, Asian Journal of Psychology and Education and on the Editorial Board of 18 Academic Journals. He has guided 80 thesis and has completed 18 sponsored research projects in applied psychology. He is associated with many national and international professional organizations. He has many special achievements and many recognitions to his credit including life time achievement awards. He has conducted 50 training programs abroad and 200 in India on various subjects like mental training, stress management, sports psychology etc. Talking about International Literacy Day, Rtn. Dr. Harinder Jit Kaur informed that UNESCO on November 17, 1965 declared September 8 as International Literacy Day, to highlight the importance of literacy in the world. She explained the importance of digital literacy to understand computer basics, internet, smart phones etc. Rtn. Renu Chopra spoke about Teachers Day (5 th September), which is the birthday of a great teacher, philosopher and statesman, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. She highlighted the important role played by teachers in building the nation. Proceedings managed meticulously by three Lady Rotarians; President Dr. Rita Kalra, Rtn. Dr. Harinder Jit Kaur and Rtn. Renu Chopra Prof. Jitendar Mohan congratulated all the award winning teachers. He gave a wonderful presentation which started by recalling his meeting, as a young student, with Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, and quoted him in the first slide of his presentation, "The end-product of education should be a free creative man, who can battle against historical circumstances and adversities of nature." In his address Prof. Jitendra Mohan felt happy to honour the best teachers of this area. He appreciated our club’s efforts in awarding these thirty teachers, who were recognized with National Builder Awards under Rotary India Literacy Mission (RILM) to enhance the quality of education. In our regular meeting on September 08, 2017 President

Rtn. Dr. Rita Kalra welcomed the chief guest of the

meeting, Prof. Jitendra Mohan, Professor Emeritus and a

Prof. Jitendar Mohan said, “From my angle Excellence is the ray of Sun falling on a peak surrounded by dark clouds.” The

teachers give knowledge to their students. The teachers got the awards from our club because they deserved it. The Professor

discussed excellence in the context of education. Teachers should discover their ability to create excellence, an ability they

already possess. The path of excellence is a form of self enquiry. He also talked about foundation skills, networking,

innovation, governance etc. He expects teachers to be fearless and have leadership qualities.

The Professor complimented Rotarians for the excellent idea of recognizing the teachers so that they get glory.

On behalf of our club PP Dr. Balram Gupta thanked Prof. Jitendar Mohan for his delightful and a motivational oration which

will inspire the teachers to achieve excellence, and influence their students.

Rotaract Club of Vidya Jyoti Eduversity celebrated

International Literacy Day by organizing Beti Bachao Beti

Padao Nukkad Natak at Derabassi Bus stand on 08.09.17

Rotaract Club of Chandigarh Midtown organized an event

in NGO Aayam who are teaching the underprivileged

children in Mohali. 75 literacy kits, each one containing a

pencil, wax crayon, eraser, sharpener, a drawing book and

coloring book were given to each child of the NGO. A

drawing competition was also organized and all the

children were rewarded with chocolates.

The children were motivated to read and learn, help each

other. They were also inspired to keep their homes and

surroundings clean.
