HI! I’MNATHAN &
I DESIGN!
I’m Nathan - a 24 year old Building Designer from
Geelong. My passion for Ar-chitecture extends from my long established love for all design and is enhanced by it’s diverse problem solving scenarios and its real world implications.
I can appreciate most styles of architecture however I am inclined toward mod-ern styles with bold but well articulated statements and
intentions.
Professionally I am results driven and competitive. Everyday I need to be better than I was yesterday. I am looking for a design firm that will utilize the skills I have developed in a challenging capacity, all the while providing an environ-ment in which I can further develop my abilities and knowledge.

01THE POIKA POD
My first design brief was to create my
own ‘personal space’ sited at Bells Beach. This space could be designed to be anything we want-ed.
With the site being relatively obscured, I felt having a self serviced unit would be great home way from home - a space in which one could disassociate from every day life and just relax with the ambiance of the coast.
The beautiful context made it clear to me that the design should have minimal impact on the site. This drove the insect -like stilt structure that supports the ‘pod’.
The aesthetics were inspired by McBride Charles Ryan’s Klein Bot-tle House and the pod was design to embrace passive ESD principles (including ventilation and lighting).

In 2010 Geelong was the host to the UCI Road World Championships, a tourna-ment second only to the Tour de France.
In conjunction with the City of Greater Geelong and the UCI Committee - The Gor-don found the opportunity to deliver the Advanced Building Design students a real world project.
The brief was to create a ceremony stage and time
trials starting ramp that embraced both it’s purpose and Geelong’s waterfront.
The premise of this proj-ect is that the best design would be selected and actu-ally implemented.
While these designs were one of the five groups short-listed, the UCI committee decided to go with standard portable set ups.
While learning Autodesk 3ds Max I intend on re-visiting old projects and using it’s capabilities to improve design presentations. This is the first - using 3DS Max and MentalRay.

My first residential de-sign project was a family home situated at the 13th Beach Golf Course Estate. It was conducted in groups of two and was to focus on the require-ments of ResCode as well as covenant design guidelines.
The design guidelines required the use of modern design elements as well as an articulated facade.
While it was important to me that we acknowl-edged the design guide-lines, I also felt the need
to tastefully separate this family home from the existing paradigm of this gated community, and my teammate strongly agreed.
This was the driving force behind features such as the butterfly roofs and the side access for the garage freeing up the front facade for livable space and design features.
Care was also taken to ensure the access of natural light and ventila-tion for most habitable spaces of the building.

A couple aspects of our concept which help reduce the reliance on power con-suming devices
Natural light is provided to the toilet and bathroom through the use of double glazed windows. By design these windows prevent direct heat from the sun entering the building but still allow natural light to filter through. Reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day
Louvre windows, sliding windows and sliding doors have been situated to allow the cool south west breeze to flow through the house, in particular the living areas. (Living rooms, Dining area and the Kitchen). This not only reduces the need for air-conditioning but also keeps the air throughout the house fresh

Floor Plan
We aimed for an open plan layout with as few hallways as possible. As a result a free and -
nate most areas with sunlight, saving energy by minimizing the need for artificial lighting.
Main living spaces are situated to the rear (north) side of the building to make the most of the winter sunlight. A large amount of glass is also used in the facade to encour-age natural sunlight, which in turn reduces the need for artificial heating and lighting.
A lavish outdoor entertainment area, with plenty of room for family and friends makes the place a hosts dream. Featuring an outdoor barbecue which is integrated with the internal kitchen, allowing you to prepare meals inside and pass them out through the double hung window.
Large bedrooms for all, with even the stand-ard bedrooms providing enough room for a queen sized bed and a large desk with space to spare.
An unconventional approach has been taken with the garage, taking advantage of the
large nature of the site. It has been situated down the side of the house, leaving room at the front for a more articulated facade. This also results in more parking space in the driveway

Drive as being the most appropriate site due to site being larger than Fourth Loop and the North facing rear boundary.
With North being at the back of this site we immediately envisioned situating our main
living areas at the rear of our building in a way that would directly integrate them with the outdoor entertainment facilities.
We also instantly found an advantage in the not only larger, but wider site. Making it easier to design a more open floor plan
while situating the garage on the side of the property.
A slight aesthetic issue with the site is the fire hydrant out front, however we felt this wasn’t going to affect our design.

Following the design of our first residential building, our class was charged providing a pre-liminary set of working drawings, sans details.
However in addition to the original develop-ment, the brief had been adjusted to incorporate a second storey for the
residence.
This new space was to be a new master bedroom and was to be architec-turally styled based on that of a famous archi-tect of our choosing.
For my particular design, I chose to embrace the brutalist and monolith-
ic forms employed by Tadao Ando whose work I was drawn to.

In 2013 I continued my Diploma, with a design brief was to create a community learning/library learning facility in Torquay.
The single storey build-ing was to integrate with the immediate surround-ings as possible.
My objective was to create a design that embraced Torquay’s rela-tively young endeavour to incorporate contem-porary architecture.
I also pursued various passive ESD principals (particularly lighting, ventilation and thermal mass).
Finally I wanted to take advantage of the con-text, by maintaining views of the beautiful scenery with a green roof.
I aimed to implement a dynamic but bold form, which extends from the purpose of the space itself.

THEHORIZONCENTRE
WHY HORIZONI have chosen to name this project The Hori-zon Centre. This reflects the ability to clearly view the horizon from the implemented green roof.
More importantly The Horizon Centre and it’s surrounds are a source of information and experience. These two valuable assets are what empowers individuals to take advan-tage of opportunities that may lay over the horizon.
Perhaps most importantly, ‘The Horizon Centre’ is quite an ambiguous name, and was intended to be that way through design. A byproduct of this ambiguity will be imagination among people as they generate their own theories and conclu-sions about the significance of the name.

A STORY FOR EVERYONE
Each facade of the building has been designed to repre-sent various facets that a learning centre should provide or promote.
THE KEY ISINTEGRITY
All of these various traits are tied together by the use of con-crete as a cladding material. Concrete in construction is a strong material which provides integrity, an attribute that bonds these four traits togeth-er.

DESIGNMy primary goal was to design a community centre for learning and development. It needed to be a design that capti-vates the local communi-ty and invites them to uti-lize the facility.
AESTHETIC DESIGNArchitectural style of libraries in the Geelong Region are, in a general sense, outdated.
Many of the venues have not been updated in over 10 years which provides a stagnant appearance in a sector that should always have a contem-porary feel.
On the contrary, there are a few examples of modern libraries in the Geelong Region which take a contemporary ap-proach.
GOALSTorquay’s local architec-ture (particularly on The Esplanade) is in a com-parable predicament. With many of the com-mercial buildings being of a past era.
In response to these fac-tors I have chosen to take a more contempo-rary approach to the design with the intention of setting a benchmark of design for future de-velopments in the area.

FUNCTIONAL GOALSThe goal that was most import-ant to me, was the creation of a space that enables members of the community to come to-gether as groups or individuals and take part in the opportunity to learn, discover and imagine in a sociable environment.
While this ideology is not new, there is currently no venue in Torquay that provides such an important space.
VIEWSPerhaps the most important asset of this project is the site. It is a rectangular, relatively flat site that is oriented directly north.
More importantly the site has impressive views that are often unachievable on a non-resi-dential site.
The East boundary overlooks Bass Strait, with natural coast-ing landscaping on the shore.Taylors Park is situated across the road from the North bound-ary. This beautiful untouched
nature reserve provides a calming sensation.
My intentions were to maxi-mize the exposure to these views in such a way that leaves them unobstructed.
OUTDOOR AREASThe site is situated in relatively quiet portion of Torquay. This make it ideal for outdoor areas.
Outdoor areas provide a more comfortable and natural envi-ronment and as such result in an enriched experience.
As such, it is abundantly clear how important the use of out-door environments for reading, relaxing and socializing. There-fore this is one of my key objec-tives.
LITERATURE & INFORMA-TIONOne of The Horizon Centre’s key functions is servicing the area as a library. By traditional definition this a space that holds a large collection of
books.
However, consideration today needs to be made as to the role of technology in the storage and accessibility of informa-tion.
Many publications are avail-able on the Internet and people are progressively becoming more comfortable and efficient with accessing this informa-tion.
However, 38% of the popula-tion over 15 years old of the Torquay & Jan Juc area are over the age of 55. This demo-graphic, and some of the younger age group, are gener-ally less capable or even com-fortable with computers.
This means there is a require-ment to have traditional litera-ture in the library with the abili-ty to recycle the space to a more technologically inclined environment.

KEYFEATURES
The Horizon Centre is an ap-proach that strongly promotes contemporary architecture within the Torquay area.
It has been designed to instill fas-cination in community members passing by, with hope that their curiosity alone will be enough to draw them in to the community centre.
GREEN ROOFThe context of this site is truly unique with beautiful yet diverse scenery on both the North & East sides. Failure to enable the com-munity to absorb such an envi-ronment would poor use of such a resource.
As such, one of the key features of this building that makes it truly unique is the implementation of the traffic-able green roof.
This provides an elevated open space which will facilitate an un-obstructed and unprecedented view of this natural luxury.NATURAL LIGHTING AND VEN-TILATIONIn a community centre one of the most important factors of patron enjoyment is environment.
Through the design stage I have attempted to help enhance this environment by using as much natural ventilation and lighting as possible.
What sets this project aside from others is the use of a central courtyard (which also serves as the access point for the green roof). It allows soft ambient light to filter through the gallery. This central courtyard is situated in be-tween the high point of raked ceil-ings and also incorporates awning windows to allow head to escape.
FLEXIBLE SPACETechnology is progressively causing a paradigm shift in the way we access information.
To suggest that hard copy infor-mation will always be the focus of libraries would be an act of igno-rance to a future with very real
potential.
To help future proof the building no shelving has been designed for permanence. The Horizon Centre building that provides a large and flexible space for com-munity use.
At this point and time, it is appro-priate to have a large collection of physical literature, however in the future these needs may need to be reassessed and changes in space utilization may occur.

THELAYOUT
The layout designed for the Horizon Centre strongly focus-es on the community oriented nature of the building.
Entrances and exists are locat-ed on both main roads with an outdoor cafe area located on The Esplanade.
These spaces provide an envi-ronment for social interaction but also allow for private use of the facility.
Multipurpose rooms have also been implemented with enough room for 20 students (both rooms combined) in a class room set up.

SITE AND CONTEXT
It is proposed that the building be tied into the Foreshore & Taylor’s park by the use of subtly modified pedestrian crossings.
To link The Horizon Centre to the business district, thought provok-ing signage is to be implemented along the residential fencing.

The last major priority was to ensure The Horizon Centre implemented a high caliber of sustainable design.
Green Roof
GREEN ROOFThe green roof is arguably the iconic feature of The Horizon Centre. It’s pur-pose is to provide use to a space that would ordinari-ly be neglected. As a result of this implementa-tion it provides an addi-tional function to the build-ing and a place for social interaction. It doesn’t serve a environmental purpose as water will be drained onto another roof then stored in tanks.
Rain and Grey Water CollectionTanks are to be installed underground to store col-lected rainwater and grey water. This water will be used for operating toilets and maintaining the grounds.
This reduces demand on local water supply and building operation costs.
NATURAL VENTILA-TION AND LIGHTINGAwning windows are to be implemented on both the north and south sides of the building. This will pro-mote cross ventilation.
The internal courtyard is provided with awning win-dows at a higher point of a raked ceiling which helps act as a solar chimney promoting natural convec-tion.
To maximize light natural light penetration the court-yard has been made from curtain glass.
These passive tech-niques reduce the demand on fossil fuel powered electricity and help put the building into a more self sufficient cate-gory, further reducing op-erational costs.
SOLAR DESIGNSteps are to be made to ensure the sun is being used as much as possi-ble. Large amounts of cur-tain glass have been situ-ated on the north facade to maximize solar heat during winter. Photo-vol-taic cells have also been added to power the build-ing.
CLADDINGOver 95% of the cladding
will be cast insitu con-crete.
This has low embodied energy (1.9MJ/Kg) but when all construction is taken into consideration it may not be as environ-mentally appropriate.
This factor is negated by the thermal mass proper-ties.
This was primarily approached from a economical and environmental sense, however sociological aspects were also taken into consideration.

0758 CORIO STREET
One of my most enjoy-able projects was 58 Corio Street. This project provided many design challenges which helped develop my skill as a designer.
The design was to be a mixed use develop-ment consisting of a hospitality component on the ground floor and
residential apartments above.
I chose to implement an implied interpretation of the context into my design while ensuring the scheme maintained an identity.
The restaurant was de-signed to be alluring with the ‘fins’ encouraging
people to gaze into the building to discover what was within.
I felt the units needed to be a more subtle addi-tion, a counterpoint to the restaurant, to en-hance privacy in a public space. As such they are monolithic in design and set back from the street front.
Student Project - Commercial Geelong, Victoria The Gordon Tafe 2013
22
An engaging proposal that will not only embrace Geelong’s recent interest in contem-porary architecture but will also set expectations for the future of G e e l o n g ’ s streetscape and will challenge how the region a p p r o a c h e s building design in future.
This scheme however is about more than setting standards.
58 Corio Street is a context-rich opportunity which allows for the repurpose of land that once was the location of a popular hangout and transform it into a mixed use development that combines modern apartments and a restaurant bar facility. This needs to be achieved with a commer-
cially viable public venue while maintaining the privacy and comfort of the apartments.
The objective was to design a response that creates a sense of allure without being overstated. The resulting style is a harmonious but indirect integration of both the traditional and c o n t e m p o r a r y elements that can be found within the street scape
The restaurant /bar facade com-prises of a series of vertical timber fins. This screen obscures the inte-rior of the restau-rant, requiring that people physically approach the building to discov-er the beautiful venue within.
This repetitious feature is an-
chored to the site through two large brick walls that mark the entrance.
Upon entering the restaurant/bar you are immediately met with a perpen-dicular brick wall, a point in which you must to decide be-tween the lounge bar or the restau-rant.
This design deci-sion is about much more than ensur-ing structured cir-culation, it is about creating a clear transition from out-side to in. The oc-cupants are no longer in Geelong, they are in a cut-ting edge but beautifully rustic world filled with tempting aromas, delicious food and refreshing bever-ages but most im-portantly a com-fortable atmo-sphere.
The design of the
apartments has been conducted in such a way that provides a coun-terpoint to the rest of the scheme. The goal was to make it aestheti-cally pleasing but not let it draw at-tention from the restaurant below.
To accomplish this, a dark and monolithic form has been devised with large subtrac-tions for the balco-ny spaces. This form is continued through to the ground floor where the residential access point is.
The setback of the apartments en-sures that shad-owing from nearby buildings is mini-mized and that oc-cupant privacy is provided from the street.

nathan peucker || 58 Corio Street
58 Corio Street is located in central Geelong. This scheme includes four 2-bedroom apartments to capitalise on the young adult demo-graphic who are likely to be looking for residences as close to the CBD as possible.
These apartments are split across levels one and two, which have identical layouts. The living areas enjoy a North accent to reduce need for mechanical heating in winter.

The restaurant/bar facility has been designed to provide a social and dining experience that does not replicate the standard hospitality model in Geelong. The restaurant is divided up into sections to provide a more intimate experience.
The lounge bar is just that, a place to drink and socialise, with couches and bar stools provided. The intention is for this space to be used in a way that prioritises social interaction and making new connections, making patrons naturally comfortable which relieves the need for excessive alcohol consumption and improves the desirability of the venue to all demographics.
ESD
This scheme proudly implements the following principles to help ensure various forms of sustainability:
Environmental-Photovoltaic Cells-North aspect for residential units with shaded windows.-Double-glazed windows.-Natural lighting to all habitable spaces in apartments-Graywater & Stormwater collection and recycling-All electrical and water fittings to have maximum achievable star ratings where applicable-All light fittings to be LED -Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning-Hydronic heating.-Bike racks provided to both SOUs and the restaurant facility to encourage building occupants to cycle. -No parking for restaurant/bar. This will encourage staff and patrons to walk or utilize readily available public transport.-Recycling provided to both residential and restaurant/bar.
Social/Economical-Units to have comfortable atmosphere through low VOC paints and hydronic heating.-Units to have access to community vegetable garden.
BUILDING LIFE CYCLE
USAGE STATISTICS
Material SourcingMaterials are to be sourced through means of recycling wherever possible. All concrete is to be manufactured from recycled aggre-gate, the timber fins are to be sourced from old railway sleepers and bricks to be sourced from second hand distributors.
In addition to this, all structural timber will be sourced from renew-able plantations with the relevant certification.
Building OccupancySystems that are implemented as part of the design proposal are to be maintained to ensure maximum building performance. Where possible, upgrades should be made to increase environmental sustainability.
DemolitionMost materials within this scheme can be recycled and this opportu-nity taken advantage of. All timber and brickwork fins can go on to be repurposed. Steel melted down and incorporated into new products and concrete can have the aggregate recycled into other products. Were possible fenestration will be removed from the site in whole segments and reused as is, otherwise they will be recycled based on materials (glass & metal).

08RYRIE RETAIL+
In the final year of my di-ploma we had one major group project.
We were to propose a scheme consisting of a retail typology of our choice that would reju-venate and re-imagine Geelong’s retail industry.
There was also to be a link between the main
street (Ryrie Street) and the otherwise dilapidat-ed alley behind the site.
Once deciding on a typology of clothes and book stores, each mem-ber of our group came up with a concept.
My concept was chosen and as such we devel-oped my design.
I wanted to incorporate contemporary style that is not seen in the main streets of Geelong, taking cues from some developments in Mel-bourne (like the RMIT’s modern development in an otherwise traditional context).
Additionally I wanted bold forms to be the
key design, allowing the building to be perceived as more dynamic.
While I lead the design process, my team was undeniably valuable es-pecially when it came to broadening my horizons in design styles.

The objective of Ryrie Retail+ is to broaden the horizons of what can be expected in the Geelong CBD. Geelong is cur-rently experiencing an industrial and economical para-digm shift, with the manufacturing sector in continuous decline Group Four has decided that there is no better time to show that Geelong and it’s citizens are here to stay.
The iconic triangular facade on Ryrie Street extends the purpose of the building to the external fabric, acting as a street side catalogue by providing space for store mer-chandise.
The rear facade comprises of a large mesh which allows moderated natural light and ventilation to enter the entire building, providing a more natural feeling space and a more comfortable experience. A section of double glazing helps light up he building further. The oors have been designed and shaped to maximize the penetration of light from this glazing.
49% of the site has been made permanently accessible to the public and facilitates tra c between Market Square and Ryrie Street. This space provides a cafe, entertain-ment stage, soft landscaping and sanitary amenities (lockable)

Clothing - The aim of our clothing compo-nent is to sell high quality community cre-ated merchandise which will provide unique attire for everybody. Books - The bookstore provides a large selection of titles including as much special interest as possible. Combined with read-ing areas makes the experience more relaxed and provides social opportunities.

This scheme proudly implements the following principles to help ensure vari-ous forms of sustainability:
Environmental-Photovoltaic Cells.-North facade comprises of a permeable screen, allowing natural ventilation and light to enter the building while providing shade.-Double-glazing.-Lightwell also incorporated in the roof to further allow natural lighting.-Lightwell tted with operable glazing to enable night time heat purging.-Stormwater collection.-All electrical and water ttings to have maximum achievable star ratings where
ESD SUMMARY
BUILDING LIFE CYCLEMaterial SourcingMaterials are to be sourced through means of recycling wherever possible. All concrete is to be manufactured from recycled aggregate.
In addition to this, all structural and cladding timber will be sourced from renewable plantations with the rele-vant certi cation.
Building OccupancySystems that are implemented as part of the design proposal are to be main-tained to ensure maximum building performance. Where possible, up-grades should be made to increase environmental sustainability through-out the building life-cycle.
DemolitionMost materials within this scheme can be recycled and this opportunity should be taken advantage of. Steel melted down and incorporated into new products and concrete can have the aggregate recycled into other products. Were possible fenestration will be removed from the site in whole segments and reused as is, otherwise they will be recycled based on materi-als (glass & metal).
For further information, please refer to the ESD Report included with the design proposal.
applicable-All light ttings to be LED -Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning-Parking is not provided. Bike racks are provided and public transport to be pro-moted as part of the information centre.-The Community refuse space will pro-mote recycling and reduce the number of trucks required for garbage collection locally.
Social/Economical-Natural ventilation provided through rear facade.-Upper oors designed to maximize light permeability.
Ryrie Retail+ takes advantage of innova-tive and contemporary design while intro-ducing new functionality into the Geelong retail paradigm. Some features include:-Large open public space -Sheltered outdoor entertainment area-Large bookstore complete with lounge and information services.-Community based clothes store. Collab-oration do be arranged with local fashion designers, learning institutions and the online platform Etsy.com.-Strong emphasis on healthy movement.
SCHEME FEATURESElevator is relatively obscured inside book store with stairs being an obvious option. Additionally a bike rack is provided in the rear lane.-Soft landscaping on ground oor. -Community refuse project as a place for nearby businesses to dispose of garbage.-Custom designed street furniture-Strong emphasis on indoor environment comfort.-Green wall.

09HOME OF TOMORROW
After completing my study, one of the course facilitators, Greg Jones regarding a competition his company, GJP Architects was entering.
Greg has a traditional skill-set when it comes to Architectural presentation and wanted to provide an entry that was on par with many presentations today.
All of the presentation works were created in less than a week, based on the hand draw-ings he had provided.
In addition to his actual design, I wanted to create an emotion-al connection with the viewer by showing the home used in a
family context.
All plan drawings were digitally cleaned and coloured in Pho-toshop, emulating use of copic markers to tie it in with Greg Jones’ style.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME
My folio aims to showcase my capabilities at a rela-tively juvenile point of my career.
I am quite happy with the quality and types of work I have been able to pro-duce with no professional experience. I am however, extremely eager to devel-op myself and my skills within a real world context, through an Architectural firm that can provide a
challenging environment.
If you saw something you like, please contact me so you can discover first-hand my full potential.
Thank you for your consid-eration,
Nathan Peucker
