Section/ heating and cooling diagram:The glass shells are used to cause the convection of the air by heating the air in the shell and venting it on the top, this causes cooler air to circulate throughout the house.

STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANELSCalled SIPs for short, these locally manufac-tured panels combine structure and insulation by sandwiching styrofoam between two sheetsof wood (Oriented Strand Board, or OSB). With such a high insulation value, SIPs save energy and lower heating and cooling costs.
SUSTAINABLE FINISH MATERIALSThe entire interior is finished in sustainably harvested, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified plywood. The FSC promotes the restoration and conservation of natural forests.

WATER CONSERVATIONThe shower, sink, and toilet all use waterconserving fixtures with low-flow rates. Graywater (wastewater) from the shower is filtered, then used to flush the toilet in the bathroom.
PHASE CHANGE MATERIALThe floor of the POD features circular pans filled with Phase Change Material (PCM). PCM changes from solid to liquid at room temperature. By releasing energy at cold temperatures and storing it at warm temperatures, PCM regulates the interior temperature of the POD.

SOLAR HOT WATER HEATINGEnergy from the sun heats an antifreeze solution in the solar collector. The antifreeze is then pumped through a heat exchanger, which transfers the thermal energy from the sun tothe water in the hot water tank.
SOLAR ELECTRIC SYSTEMThe roof is designed to allow photovoltaic panels to sit at the optimum angle for solar energy collection in Columbus, Ohio. Each solar panel contains cells that convert energy from the sun directly into electricity by some-thing scientists call the photovoltaic effect. The energy collected is then stored in batteries located underneath the deck of the POD.
PASSIVE SOLAR HEATINGThe south-facing elevation features four floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for a large amount of solar heat gain in the winter months. The windows are Energy Star qualified and feature High-Performance Low-E4 glass. The E stands for emissivity, which is a measure of a materials ability to radiate absorbed energy.
