• Slave rebellions scared the pants off of Southerners– Famous Virginian rebellions were led by Nat Turner
and Gabriel Prosser
• So the Southerners cracked down with harsh fugitive slave laws
• Those who opposed slavery in the South (yes, there were Southerners who disliked slavery), we’re over-come by those supporting it– They were intimidated into silence
