2018 Catskill Ramble

Weekend Part II

FRIDAY JULY 27TH – SUNDAY JULY 29TH 2018

We have put together a great weekend of 3 full days of riding which will have us once again returning to the Catskill Mountains, but with a new host hotel/location, some different roads to travel and great restaurants to enjoy.

Day One Our weekend will start early Friday Morning July 27th – we will meet & depart from the Bayside Diner, Northern Blvd. Our Friday tentative route will take us across the Tappan Zee Bridge (or is it the Mario Cuomo Bridge?) towards and twisting through Harriman State Park to keep our trek heading northwest. Around the lunch hour we will stop at Danny’s Village Inn, Wutrsboro for a bite to eat.

Once our appetites are fore filled, we’ll be once again rolling to enter into the Catskill Mt Park. Our route will have us traveling by the Roundout Reservoir to the and Ashokan Reservoir via Peekamoose Rd then some local roads to our weekend base destination, the Slide Mt Forest House in Oliverea close to the base of Slide Mt (highest peak in the Catskills).

The Hotel is run by 3rd generation family and is reminiscent of the days past when this region was a popular tourist destination. This does not mean it is run down, in fact the opposite. Although it may “old” in style, it is clean, well maintained, charming and hosts an amazing restaurant with great German food choices along with other gourmet delights (which we will enjoy either Friday or Saturday evening); it is a great location to enjoy an autumn weekend for riding and relaxing. Granted I may be bias since I grew up in this valley as a child and the hotel owner is a childhood friend, but I am confident you will enjoy the experience as well.

The location of the hotel is in the heat of the Catskills in the Big Indian/Oliverea Valley. The location fairly remote but it does have a bar facility which is typically open during the summer months with pool table, games and even a hundred year old bowling alley plus there are fire pits on the property for the evening.

We will make provisions for Friday and Saturday to stop prior to arriving at the hotel to top off our fuel as well as stock up on any supplies you may need for the evening.

You can either reserve a room for yourself or share the larger ones with another.

We recommend that you make your reservations as early as possible since this place does fill up quickly during the summer.

WEEKEND ROUTES

Our Routes will be a combination of state, county, town and back roads that only the local folks of the region travel. A great mix of twisties, cruising, sweeping curves and scenic views to enjoy. Overall we’ll cover almost 600 miles for the weekend. Some routes may change since the seasonal roads scheduled to ride are not able to plot on the route maker.

After breakfast we will head out for another full day of riding which will lead us through the heart of Catskills past the base of Slide Mt and Frost Valley meandering towards Sullivan & Delaware Counties with a stop at a covered bridge park for some photo shots.

From there well enjoy the scenic Pepacton Reservoir roads to head towards Greene County and a loop around the Schoharie Reservoir and wandering on even more back road gems. We’ll head towards Windam for a lunch stop at the Chicken Run Restaurant

When we finish our lunch, and before any thoughts of taking a nap settle in, we roll a bit east to head down the mountain via some seasonal roads back to Ulster County with a stop in the infamous village of Woodstock for some strolling time through the town for you to stock up on all your head shop supplies.

We’ll wrap up the day of riding on Route 212 which hosts an array of nice curvy twisty sections to the town of Phoenicia to top off our fuel for Sundays ride home, but before we even think of that; we’ll enjoy another leisurely evening and an enjoyable dinner.

Woodstock They may be hippies but they do have political views too

Woodstock Galleries & Shops We take some time to stroll through the village to check out the unique galleries and shops that Woodstock has to offer – probably will see a remnant hippie that never left since 1969 – even though the concert was never there.

Like with all journeys, there is always an end; but there is no reason we cannot enjoy the travel home to slowly soften the blow of returning to congestion.

Heading East

After we wrap up breakfast and checkout, our route for the return home will take us east across the Hudson River then slowly wander down through some back roads of Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester Counties to hopefully have limited traffic congestion at the Long Island Bridges. Again, anyone that wants to get home more directly can always head south via the New York State Thruway – but that just boring.

The weather this time of year can be unpredictable you may need to consider the following:

Since where we are staying is on the remote side, we will make stops before we head to the hotel each day for items you may want to have available (drinks of whatever kind, snacks, etc).

Packing Tips

Saturday July 28th

Wander around the Catskill region with a stop in the village of Woodstock

Friday July 27th

Meet at the Baysdie Diner /Departure approx. 7:30- 8am

Friday Night Dinner will be at either the hotel or Peekamoose Restaurant

Sunday July 29th

The ride home will be heading east then south back to Long Island with a late afternoon/ early evening arrival time
