"Pink" the New York correspondent of the Char' leston Courier, says : "During the experience of the oldest inhabitant, there never were so many houses and stores to let as there are now in this city. It is believed that on tho first day of May one third of the buildings in New York will be untenanted. The fare to the cities of Brooklyn and Williamsburgh 3i being reduced, and great numbers of persons -- will no doubt remove there so as to be able to live within their crippled means." HailStorm. Our city was visited on Sunday slight by one of tho most tremendous hail storms we ver saw. The hail fell in immense quantities, and could have been shoveled up. The Washington correspondent of the Philadelphia Injittrer states, as a current rumor that a system of espionage has been recently initia ted by the Lkcolsi Government upon movements in tho South, and parties well qualified for the duties are now on their way for the capital of the Confed erate States. The boast of tho secessionists, its nnwunnndpnt savs. that the Government knows little of their schemes, will not long hold good. The Union shriekers have had a great deal to say about the enormous tax on negroes in the seceded c.to. Atflrut it wiifl asserted that South Carolina taxed each slave $1C. The falsehood was refuted ...v.nn fM vhptp. made known that the tax in that State on each slave was SI CO. The next cry of heavy taxes on negro property was directed against Mississippi. Our readers will be astonished when they learn thU the State tax in Mississippi on each slave is seventy-fiv- e cents, and the county tax can-nof- greater than the State tax. The recent mih-t.rvta- T in that SUte is thirty-seve- n cents, the total is $1 87. In our county the State and county tax on each slave is twenty-fiv- e cents on the one hun- dred dollars double the amount of South Carolina or Mississippi. WAsnrsoTOK, April 12.-Pri- Southern dispatches leave no doubt but that hostilities commenced early hour this morning at Charleston. Beau- regard, on the 8th despatched Walker, Secretary of War, that Lincoln had notified Gov. Pickens and himself that provisions would be sent to Fort Sam peaccsbly or otherwise. Walkerresponded from Montgomery on the 10th. instructing Beauregard to demand the evacuation of Fort Sumter, and. if re fused, to, proceed to reduce it; Beauregard on the 10th. replied that tho demand will bo .made to-m- row at 12. Walker, on the 10th, says to Beauregard, "that unless there are snecial reasons connected with. your condition, it is thought proper that you make the demand at any hour." Beauretrard replied, "tne reasons are special lor o'clock." On the 11th Beauregard says ths de mand was sent at 2 o'clock, and Anderson was al- lowed till C o'clock to answer. Anderson replied that his sense of honor and obligations to his Gov ernment prevent his compliance, adding ''probably 1, f; i f .1 T :., . , : Hnn wui await orucra iruui uio in:iiucui, uiuu jwu not batter us to pieces we will be starved out in few days.-- ' Walker on the 11th then telegraphs to Beaure gard, "We don't desire needlessly to bambard Fort Sumter, and if Anderson will stato when he will evacuate, and meantime not use guns against' until we fire, you are thus to avoid bloodshed. somethinS equivalent to this is not agreed ts rednca the fart in the most practicable manner." The Time's dipatch says it understood on good authority that the Govern- ment and Major Anderson will demand an explana- tion from Gov. Pickens of tho refusal to allowLieut. Talbot to return to Fort Sumter. South Carolina will be held responsible; as it is not the intention of the President to treat with Jeff. Davis or the Southern Confederacy officially. The arioune'a dispatch says 3,000 or 4,ulM men are known to be enrolled at Baltimore ready for any desperate design which may promise reward. Measures have been taken to break up this perni cious organization. The Herald's dispatch says the President told a visitor to-d- ay that decisive events need not be look- ed for before the last day of this week- - He remark ed, "We will see then whether tney dare to nre upon an unarmed vessel to provision our starving sol- diers." and stores to let as there are now in this city. It is

believed that on tho first day of May one third of

the buildings in New York will be untenanted. The

fare to the cities of Brooklyn and Williamsburgh

The Union shriekers have had a great deal to sayabout the enormous tax on negroes in the secededc.to. Atflrut it wiifl asserted that South Carolina

taxed each slave $1C. The falsehood was refuted...v.nn fM vhptp. made known that the tax in thatState on each slave was SI CO. The next cry ofheavy taxes on negro property was directed againstMississippi. Our readers will be astonished when

they learn thU the State tax in Mississippi on eachslave is seventy-fiv- e cents, and the county tax can-nof-

greater than the State tax. The recent mih-t.rvta- T
