Tonight's Game: The Nashville Sounds and Gwinnett Stripers play game three of a six-game series to-night at Coolray Field. For the second night in a row, the Nashville Sounds outhit the Gwinnett Stripers but lost, suffering a 9-3 defeat on Wednesday night at Coolray Field. Right-hander Bowden Francis starts for the Sounds against right-hander Kyle Wright for the Stripers.
Bowden Francis: 25-year-old Bowden Francis makes his fourth start for the Sounds tonight. He last pitched on June 11 and got the win vs. Indianapolis. He worked a season-high 7.0 innings and gave up just 1 hit and 0 runs. He added 6 strikeouts and 1 walk in Nashville's 14-1 win. He was named Milwaukee Brewers organizational Pitcher of the Month for May (along with RHP Taylor Floyd). The right-hander made 5 starts (4 with Double-A Biloxi, 1 with Nashville) and went 4-1 with a 3.81 ERA (11 ER/26 IP). Francis allowed 22 hits and 8 walks during the month of May to go along with 34 strikeouts, while holding opposing batters to a .220 average. Milwaukee drafted Francis in the 7th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Kyle Wright: 25-year-old Kyle Wright makes his eighth start for Gwinnett tonight. On June 11, Wright covered 1.2 innings and gave up 1 run on 1 hit and struck out 2. He faced Nashville on May 18 and gave up 5 runs in 4.2 innings. He made one start with Atlanta on April 16 at Chicago-NL and pitched 4.1 innings and gave up two runs on three hits and struck out five. In 2020, Wright made a career-most eight starts during his third major league campaign, going 2-4 with a 5.21 ERA (22 ER/38.0 IP). He won each of his last two decisions and the Braves won his last three starts. The Alabama native made his playoff debut in Game 3 of the NLDS vs. Miami and pitched 6.0 shutout innings in the start, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out seven.
2021 Standings: The Sounds have spent the following number of days in the Triple-A East Southeast Division standings in 2021: First: 22, Second: 6, Third: 1, Fourth: 13, Fifth: 2, Sixth: 0, Seventh: 0.
Four-Game Skid: Nashville's 9-3 loss to Gwinnett last night gave them their fourth consecutive loss. The four-game skid matches their longest of the season, they last lost four straight from 6/4-8.
June Struggles: The Sounds offense is down in June after finishing in the top 3 in several categories in the month of May. So far in June, Nashville is 11th in the Triple-A East in batting average (.239), 10th in slugging percentage (.414) and 10th in OPS (.765).
Double Digits for Hiura: Infielder Keston Hiura has hit safely in 12 games, the longest streak by a Sounds player in 2021. Since May 18, Hiura is hitting .488 (20-for-41) with 9 runs, 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 10 RBI and 8 walks during the streak. It's the second-longest active streak in the Triple-A East behind only Durham's Wander Franco (13 games). It's the first time a Sounds player has put together a hitting streak of 10 or more games since Nick Solak had an 18-game streak from July 30-August 18, 2019.
Have a Series: Infielder/outfielder Jamie Westbrook had quite the series against Indianapolis and con-tinued as he tied a career-high with 4 hits last night (10x, last - 5/4/21 at TOL). Dating back to the start of the Indianapolis series on June 8, Westbrook has hit safely in every game. During the 8-game stretch, Westbrook is batting .500 (17-for-34) with 7 runs, 5 doubles, 2 home runs, 10 RBI and 1 walk.
Close as Can Be: Nashville's six-game series sweep of Gwinnett from May 18-23 was nearly as close as a series can get. The Sounds won five of the six games by one run and the other game by two runs. Nashville only scored 23 runs and hit .223 as a team but the pitching staff limited the Stripers to a .189 team average and only 16 runs.
Another Streak for Pérez: Hernán Pérez has hit safely in 5 straight games for the second time this season. He is 1 of 4 Sounds to have 2 5-game hit streaks (Zach Green, Corey Ray and Dustin Peter-son).
How Sweet It Is: Manager Rick Sweet is at the helm for the Sounds in 2021, as he was in 2014 when he led the club to a 77-67 record. Sweet has managed for all or parts of 30 seasons in the minor leagues and has compiled a managerial record of 2,051-1,934. The 2,051 wins are 11th-most all-time among all minor league managers. 10th on the list is Lefty O’Doul who won 2,094 games from 1935-57.
The Milwaukee Era: A new era of Nashville Sounds baseball began on February 12, 2021 when the club announced its affiliation with the Milwaukee Brewers. The affiliation with Milwaukee came after the Sounds signed a 10-year Professional Development License (PDL) with Major League Baseball as part of the 20-team Triple-A East League. Within the Triple-A East League, the Sounds are a member of the seven-team Southeast Division.
