Nashville in 2015, organizing what will be the largest Plensa

A ntonio Stradivari crafted some of the finest stringed instruments the world has ever known. Though he used the

same materials as everyone else, this particular artisan poured his heart and soul into each piece. Metaphysical connections notwithstanding, there is something about the way the master assembles the materials that simply makes the piece. This is the philosophy of Michael Damico, owner of Damico Frame & Art

Gallery in Franklin, TN. Michael is more than just a framer, he is an accomplished artist with a finely attuned eye for beauty and unwillingness to settle for anything less than superior quality productions.

Michael does custom picture framing for customers, art ists, and photographers at every level, from beginner to expert, as well as anyone in need of printing. The most popular print materials are those on canvas, textured watercolor paper, and hot press smooth fine art paper. All the materials Michael uses are certifiably archival, including the inks with which he prints.

“My scanner, computer, and printers are all speaking the same language. All of this equals great output. The old saying ‘you get out what you put in’ applies here because I’m scanning at the absolute threshold of what the printers are actually capable of expressing,” said Michael.

Because Michael uses his printers set on the maximum amount of ink coverage, he is able to capture a wide range of color. Additionally, he uses custom digital profiles specially designed for each type of substrate upon which the images are printed.

Most of the artists and photographers Michael works with utilize him for a one-stop shopping experience. Not only does he do their print work for them, but also customers are able to select the perfect custom frame right in the store. He has a wide range of elegant frame designs, from traditional to contemporary. Further, he has a knack for matching any style or taste with nearly every budget.

“The quality and accuracy of colors! It’s like Mike knows more about what I want than I do. Plus, I know he has the eye of an artist so he can determine if the colors are accurate,” said realism painter Diane Davich.

More than a custom framer, Michael has a clear understanding of where customers want to take their vision and he is able to help them get there. Michael is a skilled artist with more than 20 years professional experience and formal training as an artist. He also has more than 10 years professional experience as a custom conservation picture frame craftsman. Many of his artist and photographer customers allow him to customize their retail products. Whether they are preparing for a festival or gallery opening, he guides them to ensure they will have a good variety of products to sell along with their originals in a way that allows them to capitalize on most any price range. 1What changes in the arts have you noticed?

The most exciting change I see is more discerning patrons looking for diversity, more focused work, and finding it here. Nashville has always enjoyed a healthy studio artists’ community, and these days it’s exceptional. Otherwise, it’s business as usual.

2 What about our arts community excites you most right now?

A broad-based, grass-roots interest in what artists do. Our greatest asset has always been people; artists, arts professionals, and forward-thinking individuals networking. As most American cities currently emphasize the direct contributions Creative Industry makes in their respective communities, we see these assets putting Nashville consistently ahead of that curve leading the conversation.

3What opportunities do you have as an artist living here?

I think we tend to avoid a lot of the hassles many others encounter in larger markets

and take advantage of Nashville’s livability and existing infrastructure to get work done. That’s why we see luminaries outside of country music land here, like Jack White, the Black Keys, etc.

4What would you say to an artist who is moving to Nashville?

Get involved. Immediately. Nashville built its reputation in the visual arts by having

a very connected and friendly studio community. Studio space is important, and finding one with other artists around you is how you build a network and find opportunities.

5What’s the best approach to becoming part of the Nashville

arts scene? The quickest way to introduce yourself to artists and professionals is to become a resource. Invite another artist to put up work in your studio and invite people over to see it. Give a show to get a show. It also helps to attend as many openings as you can.

6What do you like most about living in Nashville?

It’s my hometown. I did not have to move to a larger market city; it moved here.

7What trends have you seen in the arts over the years in Nashville?

I think of trends as industry mechanisms. I have seen Art Crawls, the heyday of 35+ independent artists groups, the Studio/Gallery scene, Maker Culture, Pop-ups, Art/Music/Food Festivals, Creative Industry spearheading Community Building and Commercial Development, etc. This is Creative Industry asserting itself. These manifestations are always with us and individually move to the forefront at auspicious moments. Looking beyond trending and understanding why these components occur within industry cycles is crucial to their development.

8What can visitors expect to see when they go to galleries in various

neighborhoods in Nashville? Is there something you’d say characterizes “Nashville Style”? “Nashville Style” has always been about diversity. It’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. It ’s very focused, idea-based work existing side by side with the most traditional crafting. You can’t have one without the other, and you will find these things in any neighborhood currently asserting itself.

9What’s your idea of the perfect art-filled day in town?

If we’re limiting it to visual art there is certainly the Frist or Cheekwood, but I would encourage folks to take in a show at any of the college and university spaces, hit any of the area commercial galleries, and find an artist-run initiative or cooperative space. For a more intimate experience, talk to any of the area commercial spaces and have them set up a couple of studio visits. Then get Hot Chicken and go to Springwater.

10What are some of the strengths of our various arts institutions?

In what has traditionally been a relatively small market, all aspects of the visual arts industry here work together. Commercial gallery artists teach in area university programs, and artists running independent initiatives are on staff with area museums and arts commissions. One area informs the other. When curators, artists, or anyone interested visits and digs a bit deeper, the larger picture of what the visual arts bring to this city comes into focus.
