FOR 78 YEARS YOUNG JOURNALISTS HAVE ASSEMBLEDCUP was born in a bar. This isn't the punchline to some obscure joke told poorly at family gatherings. To understand how CUP was born, it helps to have some context, you actually want to hear the punchline here.

At the turn of the 20th century in Canada, Confederation was, in relative terms, still pretty recent. The new British North America Act gave provinces jurisdiction over higher education, and while university was originally the exclusive privilege of the rich upper-classes, as provinces started opening more public universities, education (slowly, very slowly) became more widely available.

In these early days, Canadian universities had few official student organi-zations. Students looked to British university students for examples, find-ing few at home. Gradually, student associations and student newspapers formed.

In December of 1926, ten students from student associations came to-gether to form the National Federation of Canadian University Students. NFCUS members met annually, and they often invited the editors of student newspapers to join them. It's here where CUP's story really started.

Student editors (predictably) didn't really feel like they fit in at these kinds of conferences, so, as student journalists do, they found each other and had their own unofficial conference. Eventually, these editors decided to make it official, and so, on the morning of New Year's Day, 1938, in the Royal Alexandra Hotel in Winnipeg, CUP was born.

Even before CUP, we can already see the familiar outline of NASH from within those early, unofficial meetups. Its this spirit of coming together from across the country to share in a common passion that has always informed what we as student journalists do.

So, during this 78th official NASH, remember those student journalists who knew things were better when we assemble together.
