NASA SMD Rideshare Ø The Science Mission Directorate has issued a rideshare policy and
established an SMD Rideshare Office (SRO) to develop standard rideshare processes for the SMD Directorate.
Ø SPD-32 Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA) Secondary Payloads RideshareØ Baseline policy signed Oct. 2018; Policy updated January 2021 (Rev 2)
Ø SMD policy enables rideshare or launch accommodation opportunities using an ESPA-type ring integrated on the launch service procured for an SMD primary payload with identified excess performance.
Ø SMD may offer any excess capacity not utilized for SMD investigations to other NASA Mission Directorates (MD), other U.S. Government Agencies, or NASA’s International partners in accordance with international agreements for international collaborative efforts relating to science, technology, and exploration goals.
Ø ** This policy only applies to ESPA-class and independent Cubesatmissions on ESPA ports (not Cubesats which are managed through the CubeSat Launch Initiative-CSLI).
Ø Other key points in the policy:• Due to LV processing timelines, the secondary manifest will be decided NLT 24
months prior to the launch date….. minimizes impacts to NASA primary missions• Policy includes decision process for determining the selection of candidate
secondary payloads for launch accommodations on SMD primary missions.• Policy includes description of launch integration services… standard & mission

NASA SMD Rideshare Office (SRO) Ø Goal: To provide a single POC for SMD Rideshare-related inquiries for both NASA Center
and external partners; to maintain overall knowledge and tracking of Rideshare activities for SMD missions, and to ensure best utilization of excess LV performance to obtain maximum science on SMD missions
Ø Located within the Heliophysics DivisionØ Supports ALL SMD DivisionsØ Aly Mendoza-Hill is the Rideshare Lead for SMD
Ø Other key SMD Rideshare Team Members: Alan Zide, David Cheney, Pete Wilczynski, & Florence Tan
Ø Works closely with the Launch Services ProgramØ Works with NASA Center Rideshare POCs to create unified NASA/SMD Rideshare
message; delegates tasks to appropriate Center POCs as required; does not replace Center-level Rideshare work
Ø Developing a robust rideshare program to utilize excess mass to orbit and enable additional launch opportunities for the science communityØ Standardizing Announcement of Opportunity (AO) language and reviewing each AO
for consistencyØ Developing key documents: SMD RS101, SMD RUG & DNH requirements, & the
SMD RS Implementation PlanØ Performing top-level payload compatibility analyses of rideshare missions to identify
potential impacts to the primary payload or the success of the secondariesØ Maintaining a list of SMD launch opportunities and tracking potential external launch
opportunitiesØ External information is made available on the Small Spacecraft Systems Virtual
Institute (S3VI) website.

IMAP Successes & Challenges• Established SIS with IMAP Primary environments early in RPL
development
• Procured the launch vehicle early for implementation of 4 additional complex rideshare missions
• Synchronizing multiple mission timelines to the Primary launch integration schedule
• Primary trajectory may drive changes to RPL systems (thermal, power, propulsion).
• Ensuring contamination requirements are met• Deployment system definition
• Establishing Program Office role in ‘Do No Harm’ management amongst all missions, as well system engineering gaps
• Secondary payload requirements can’t affect primary mission• Establishing 75 Hz Fundamental Frequency to minimize potential
coupling risks with NASA primary missions
Successes, Challenges, & Flexibility
Flexibility Enables Rideshare• Propulsion Flexibility
• Propulsion systems should be designed to be capable and compatible to multiple destinations (LEO, SSO to different ascending nodes, GTO, GEO, Lagrange points, Varying C3’s).
• Science Flexibility• Identify where the science can be performed with the instruments
used.• Know where you can do your science. This is a much larger
range than where you would prefer to do your science. • RPL’s should know what their flexibility/challenges are to
meet the level 1 requirements in orbits other than the desired orbit.
• Orbit Flexibility• Design spacecraft to function in as many of the locations that the
science can be performed to create flexibility in launch.• Design the mission with launch flexible dates.
